When noted director Hansal Mehta was asked about this phenomenon he said, “How would you define commercial or mainstream cinema? We haven’t seen many successful films in the recent past (sic), so by that definition, no one is a commercial director. It’s a mutual process.” Many times termed as ‘parallel cinema’ or ‘offbeat cinema’, it has always been a source of fodder for the inventive souls.
