Had she not trusted me, I would not have been able to create all these clothes You can style the whole world, but not your husband," mock-complains Niharika Khan. Ayub Khan has chosen to change out of the outfit suggested by his film stylist wife into something more formal for the evening out. Though Niharika doesn't mind it, she won't miss the opportunity to tease her husband. Her styling, however, is currently at the centre of all attention, converted into household chatter by Vidya Balan's Silk Smitha avatar in The Dirty Picture. The stylist has brought back from the 1980s, the over-the-top apsara outfits, Egyptian-style dresses, multi-coloured printed shirts and outdated gipsy skirts. But she refuses to take the sole credit. »

Daily Briefing. Terrence Malick Overdrive

2 November 2011 4:09 AM, PDT | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

Chances are, you'll have heard that we can now look forward to not just two but four new films from Terrence Malick. FilmNation, which handles international sales and distribution for Malick, sprang the surprise yesterday: Lawless will star Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara and Haley Bennett, while Knight of Cups will feature Bale, Blanchett and Isabel Lucas. Peter Knegt has the press release at indieWIRE, but basically, that's about all we know. Still, it's enough for now to chew on the news that the man who directed five features in 38 years is now working to have nearly as many out within the next two or three.

As for other two films, to recap, the first is Voyage of Time, a documentary companion to The Tree of Life narrated by Brad Pitt which will "display 'the whole of time, from the birth of the universe to its final collapse, »

Oscar 2012: New Zealand/First Samoan Feature Among Best Foreign Language Film Contenders

Tusi Tamasese's The Orator For the time being, 63 countries are in the running for nominations in 2012 Academy Awards' Best Foreign Language Film category. Notable among those is New Zealand, submitting its first entry ever, Tusi Tamasese's Samoan-language O Le Tulafale / The Orator. Of course, there's a good chance the final number of official contenders will go down as a consequence of disqualifications due to, say, deadlines or the amount of either foreignness or country-ness. The Orator, by the way, would not have been eligible a few years ago, as Samoan isn't one of New Zealand's official languages. In fact, this New Zealand entry was filmed in Samoa by a Samoan-born director using Samoan actors speaking Samoan. In fact, it's considered the very first Samoan movie ever. Now, before anyone sends The Orator back to the South Pacific, let me clarify that Tamasese is based in New Zealand, much »

First Look: Salman Rushdie’s ‘Midnight’s Children;’ Watch the Author Discuss the Film Adaptation

18 September 2011 5:14 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Salman Rushdie is one of our most valuable literary voices, and he also happens to be a tremendous fan of film. One of my earliest encounters with his work was via an essay he wrote on Terry Gilliam's Brazil (available in Imaginary Homelands [1]) and in the many years since I've had the good fortune to see Rushdie speak on the topic of film numerous times. He has talked for a few years about the upcoming adaptation of his landmark novel Midnight's Children, a novel that traces the political and cultural history of modern India through the lives of two twins and other mystically connected children born on or near the moment of India's independence. The film finally shot in recent months, based on Rushdie's own script, under the direction of Deepa Mehta. The last time we reported on the movie was in August 2010, when Scott Pilgrim's Satya Bhabha was »

Toronto 2011. Real to Reel + Mavericks Previews

25 August 2011 2:37 AM, PDT | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

There are a couple of reasons for revisiting the Toronto International Film Festival's lineup for its documentary program, Real to Reel. One of them is Aj Schnack's interview with Thom Powers, Tiff's Documentary and Mavericks Programmer, posted just hours after the Mavericks lineup was announced on Tuesday. Discussing the highlights of both programs, they touch on another reason: Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory is making all sorts of headlines. Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky's third film chronicling the odyssey of Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr, aka the West Memphis Three, through the labyrinth of the Us legal system, follows Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills (1996) and Paradise Lost 2: Revelations (2000). All three films deal with what Powers calls in his Programmer's Note "an 18-year-old murder case that has become an iconic example of a legal witch hunt." In 1993, when all three men were still teens, »
