British actor in post WWII films who started off as brash, lively Cockneys in both war drama and light farce, later developed into intriguing character player, often eccentric.
Charles Laughton and Edward G. Robinson were listed as influences in his life.

Popular in later years on TV in The Army Game (1957) (in which he sang the theme tune) and Shoestring (1979).
Produced many efforts in association with Albert Finney.
