In August, we reported that John Cusack had been cast as famed poet and author Edgar Allan Poe in James McTeigue’s upcoming film The Raven. According to McTeigue, the movie will be a cross between the suspense movie Se7en and Poe’s famous poem “The Raven” and will be a fictionalized account of Poe’s dying days.

The psychological thriller will follow Poe and a detective (played by Luke Evans) as they track down a serial killer inspired by the author’s work. The movie also stars Alice Eve as Poe’s kidnapped fiancee.

This week, Huffington Post snagged a first look photo of John Cusack in costume as Edgar Allan Poe. The black and white image shows Cusack holding a raven on his right arm and looking stern. He doesn’t…

John Cusack looks like a douchebag as Edgar Allan Poe

14 December 2010 1:44 PM, PST | Planet Fury | See recent Planet Fury news »

I'm amazed at Hollywood's inability to see how lame their own actors look as certain historical figures.

Here's a picture of John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe.

Look - he's got a Raven on his arm! Just like in real life - Poe had a pet raven named "Cadwallader" who used to follow him around and help him solve mysteries. What? You didn't know Poe was a superhero detective? He also had a sidekick named Mrs. Bigsby, who hid behind the demeanor of a housekeeper, but was actually a weapons scientist hired by the Us Government to keep Poe in the latest military-grade weapons. She had a weapons lab in the basement! She did! And his arch-nemesis, a serial killer named Lord Hughbert Graves, was, like, really evil and Poe was the only one smart enough to catch him! Graves was also a gentleman and an amateur magician, so he »

First Look: John Cusack as Edgar Allen Poe in The Raven

Here’s our first official look at John Cusack as American writer, cosmologist and cryptographer Edgar Allen Poe in James McTeigue’s (V for Vendetta, Ninja Assassin) revisionist supernatural detective thriller The Raven.

In this highly theatrical fictional version of his final days, Poe, the author of so many gruesome murder mysteries, becomes involved in his own macabre case and is in pursuit of a killer who mirrors many that he himself has written about.

The film is currently shooting the Gothic thriller in Serbia, from a script by Ben Livingston and Hannah Shakespeare.

Alice Eve plays Poe’s kidnapped fiancee, and Luke Evans is the detective who partners up with Poe. There’s lots of potential here… Poe is a rather mysterious figure of 19th century Gothic literature and in many ways he was Sherlock Holmes before Sherlock Holmes existed but then V For Vendetta had limitless promise also »

First Official Look at John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe in The Raven

14 December 2010 5:03 AM, PST | Horrorbid | See recent Horrorbid news »

In what appears to be a photoshopped picture to us is apparently a brand new "official" photo of John Cusak as Poe in James McTeigue's new film titled The Raven. We've "pondered weak and weary" about posting this simply because honestly it looks fake. But alas we are proven wrong by our source from the Huffington Post...

"It's sort of 'Se7en' meets a series of Poe stories. It's set in 1850s Baltimore, and it's about creating Poe's version of 1850s Baltimore, him moving through it. So it has a lot of the Poe stories interwoven into it," McTeigue previously stated, adding that Poe's real life will be used in the film as well.

What we know about the film this early in the game is very little except this. The Raven will be a fictional story about what would happen if a serial killer challenged poet »

John Cusack in New Image As Edgar Allan Poe in The Raven

14 December 2010 | Horror Asylum | See recent Horror Asylum news »

John Cusack appeared a little while back in an unofficial image of him dressed up as Edgar Allan Poe mooching around on the set of James McTeigue's 'The Raven'. He was kicking around in his sneakers which sort of ruined the whole period effect so The Huffington Post decided to reveal a new, and more 'official' still of Cusack. Now there's no word on the Huff's source for this one and the whole image does look a tad suspicious so take it with a pinch of salt for now. Sexy Brit Alice Eve (below) stars as Virginia Clemm-Poe. Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Dave Legeno, Luke Evans, Kevin McNally and Pam Ferris all co-star. Check out the image below. »

Here's your first official look at John Cusack as famed gothic author Edgar Allan Poe in The Raven, directed by James McTeigue (V For Vendetta, Ninja Assassin). We've seen one image of the actor in costume, but this is obviously a finished, approved promo shot as opposed to the previous [1] paparazzi on-set snap. The film presents a fictionalized look at the writer's last days, when he embarks upon a search for a killer who may be copying events from Poe's novels. See a full version after the break. [2] I like the look of this quite a lot, and am very curious to see how the film plays. I thought Ninja Assassin was a borderline unwatchable film, though I liked quite a bit of V For Vendetta. That leaves James McTeigue at a respectable .500 average. (There's also his Ad and Second Unit Director career which includes a lot of work with the Wachowskis, »

First B&W Look: John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe in 'The Raven'

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary... I'm not sure how they got it, but The Huffington Post (via MTV) recently debuted the first photo (or this just a Photoshop?) of John Cusack as poet Edgar Allen Poe in James McTeigue's The Raven. The dark thriller has been shooting Europe for the last few months and is a period piece about the last five days before Poe's odd death, in which the poet is in pursuit of a serial killer whose murders mirror those in his stories. Also co-starring: Alice Eve, Luke Evans and Oliver Jackson-Cohen. It's a simple black & white photo so it's not much, but it's our first look for now. The Raven is inspired by the famous Edgar Allen Poe poem. McTeigue explained to us last year that it's "an amalgamation of Poe's stories crossed with Se7en. It's about »

The story will follow the famous writer as he joins the hunt for a serial killer whose murders are inspired by his stories. "It's like the poem, 'The Raven,' itself, crossed with Se7en. Official Pic of John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe for ‘The Raven’

Back in August John Cusack tweeted he’d been cast as the iconically dark storyteller Edgar Allan Poe in James McTeigue‘s The Raven. Last month we revealed a sneak peak of Cusack in costume. Now, HuffPo has unveiled this publicity still for the upcoming psychological thriller, which is based on the author’s mysterious last days.

For me the word for this is underwhelming. This looks like a bad Photoshop job as the raven’s oddly blurred and Cusack’s head reads as too big for his body. And why is in black and white? Is this bothering anyone else?

What say you?

First Photo Of John Cusack As Edgar Allan Poe In 'The Raven' Hits The Web

Several months ago John Cusack announced that he would be playing Edgar Allan Poe in the upcoming murder mystery flick "The Raven," and we've been pretty intrigued by the project ever since. Now The Huffington Post has the first picture of Cusack in full Poe regalia, raven and all, and we've got to say we're officially impressed. We're not sure what's up with the goatee (we've only ever seen him in his mustachioed glory), but beyond that it's pretty much as spot-on Poe as you can get.

The film's plot is inspired by the last few, mysterious days of Poe's life. Poe died at the age of 40 after he was found wandering disoriented and injured around the streets of Baltimore. The cause of his death is still unknown, and explanations range from cholera to rabies to suicide. But "The Raven" follows the conspiracy that Poe was actually tracking down »
