Emmys: ‘This Is Us’ Beat by ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ in Key Categories, but Scores Acting Wins

17 September 2017 8:38 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Broadcast’s big shut-out in the major dramatic Emmy races continues, as not even NBC’s breakout “This Is Us” could top critical darling “The Handmaid’s Tale” from streaming service Hulu to take the drama series trophy. However, “This Is Us” did come out on top in lead dramatic actor and guest actor categories.

Nominated for 10 awards overall, “This Is Us” was the first broadcast show to be up for the drama series statue since 2011 (when “The Good Wife” was on the ballot for CBS). Had it won, it would have been the first broadcast drama to win since 2006 (when Fox’s “24” beat “The Sopranos” and three other broadcast titles). Furthermore, it would have marked the first NBC drama to win since “The West Wing” won its fourth consecutive Emmy in 2003.

Unfortunately, “This Is Us” didn’t fare much better in most of the other seven categories in which it was nominated, either »

Emmys: What Creative Arts Wins Mean for Sunday’s Awards

11 September 2017 2:21 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Trying to read the tea leaves from the Creative Arts Emmys can be a risky proposition, but the tallies from this past weekend offer a few hints about how voters are thinking.

Following suit with its nominations haul, HBO emerged as the big winner, grabbing 19 trophies over the two-night presentation of awards in 92 categories. Multiple wins for “Westworld,” “Veep,” “Big Little Lies,” and “The Night Of” drove HBO’s success. It was followed closely by Netflix with 16 (“Stranger Things,” “The Crown,” “13th”).

All told, “Westworld” and “Stranger Things” left the Creative Arts with five wins apiece. The big question is: how will that impact the night’s top prize?

Simply put: Don’t count out broadcast. “This Is Us,” the Big Four’s first serious contender in years, has real momentum going into Sunday. The fact that the NBC series didn’t score any directing or writing noms was thought to be a slight against its chances »

Westworld,” “Stranger Things,” and “Saturday Night Live” emerged as the early leaders in this year’s Emmy race after the second night of the 69th Creative Arts Emmys on Sunday.

Heading into the Primetime Emmys on Sept. 17, the three shows are tied with five total wins each. “SNL’s” trophies include guest actor in a comedy series for Dave Chappelle, who hosted the show on Nov. 12 immediately after the presidential election, and guest actress in a comedy series for Melissa McCarthy, who repeatedly portrayed former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer. The long-running NBC sketch series was up for 22 Emmys this year, tied for the most-nominated series with HBO’s “Westworld.”

For “Westworld,” the series’ five wins included special visual effects and makeup for a single-camera series (non-prosthetic). “Stranger Things” went into this year’s Emmys with 19 total nominations. Its prizes thus far include main title design and original main title theme music. However »

Creative Arts Emmy Winners: ‘Stranger Things,’ ‘Westworld,’ ‘Big Little Lies’ Win Big — Complete List

Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and HBO’s “Westworld” gained momentum in the Emmy Award race as both shows racked up five wins at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

NBC’s “This Is Us” pulled out a big win with the last award of the night — the guest drama actor win for Gerald McRaney. The same was true for Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” as Alexis Bledel prevailed for guest drama actress.

Saturday Night Live,” the venerable NBC sketch comedy, also took five wins, including comedy guest actor and actress awards for Dave Chappelle, as host, and Melissa McCarthy, for her guest appearances as former White House press secretary Sean Spicer.

Stranger Things” took the drama series casting kudo — a category that is often a bellwether for program wins at the televised Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony, which is set for Sept. 17. HBO’s “Big Little Lies” won for casting for a limited series.
