Gus McNaughton was born on July 29, 1881 in London, England as Augustus Le Clerq. He was an actor and writer, known for The 39 Steps (1935), Another Case of Poisoning (1949) and Sidewalks of London (1938). He was married to Charlotte Poluski. He died on November 18, 1969 in Castor, England.

British character comedian with slicked back hair and a beaky nose, who started as a music hall stand up comic in 1899. For several years, he was a member of Fred Karno's pantomime company. Specialised in films as the fast-talking sidekick to the hero, or as comic foil. Notable in two films by Alfred Hitchcock: Murder! (1930) and The 39 Steps (1935).
His role in "The 39 Steps" has been mistakenly credited in several film histories to Wifrid Brambell.
