Seinfeld’s classic anti-holiday episode “The Strike” has been re-gifted so many times it is almost as annoying as the holiday itself. We’re taking a strike from Festivus, because that non-holiday was only one of the many moments Jerry and the gang destroyed festivities in ways black and white cookies could never fix.
Jerry (Jerry Seinfeld), Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), George (Jason Alexander), and Kramer (Michael Richards), have soiled baptisms, weddings, anniversaries, Thanksgiving dinners, Puerto Rican Day marches, and even Super Bowl parties, which gave birth to the very phrase “re-gifting.” They’ve mugged old ladies for chocolate babkas, punctured the Woody Woodpecker balloon in the Macy’s Day Parade, and even convinced a tenant association to pass on upgrading an apartment to a survivor of the Andrea Doria shipwreck during the holiday season. Without an airing of grievances, the rest of us are pretty much covered, and it doesn...

Stars: William Shatner, Jean Smart, Christopher Lloyd, Esai Morales, Katrina Bowden, Carlos Miranda, Don McManus | Written by Kurt Brungardt, Christopher Momenee | Directed by Giorgio Serafini
William Shatner proves he’s still got it by headlining this romantic comedy at the grand old age of 90. Admittedly, the script’s a little creaky, but the film stays watchable thanks to Shatner’s star power and a charming support performance from co-star Jean Smart.
Shatner plays Victor Martin, a former NASA pilot who’s retired to Palm Springs, where he spends his days cruising around town in his beloved Porsche, hanging out with best friend Sal (Christopher Lloyd) and occasionally chasing much younger women, like car magazine model Kristen.
However, after his car spins out of control during a race against cheeky low rider Pablo (Carlos Miranda), Victor has his licence temporarily revoked and winds up meeting cafe owner Caroline (Smart) when he has to take public transport.

Even though the embargo lifted last week, I wanted to wait a few days to fully dive into Adam McKay’s latest, the Dick Cheney biopic Vice. It’s the kind of film that leaves you with complicated feelings. On the one hand, McKay is a master at moving deftly between comedy and drama. You’ll giggle in one moment and then ball your fist in anger a moment later. On the other hand, depending on your politics, the portrayal of this man may feel off. That could be true for both conservatives and liberals. At the end of the day, as a way for an auteur to try and figure out a man who no one really understands, it’s kind of fantastic. To say the least, the good outweighs the bad. The simplest way to explain this film is that it’s a biopic of Dick Cheney (Christian Bale...

At this point in the year, it can sometimes feel like the Oscar contenders are set in stone, save for an unseen X factor or two. It all can come down to a few last minute films that seek to upend the awards season. Yesterday, I saw such a thing. The movie in question is Adam McKay’s Vice, a biopic of Dick Cheney that long has seemed like a potential Academy Award player. Well, last week it unveiled itself at last, and now having seen it, I can report that voters will definitely go for this one. An actual review will have to wait until the official embargo lifts next months, but prepare for McKay and especially Christian Bale to be a major factor going forward. In case you somehow don’t know already, the film is, of course, a biopic of Dick Cheney (Bale), in all his shady glory.

Earlier today, at long last the Trailer dropped for Vice. Yes, after having spent most of the year as a speculated X factor, Adam McKay’s latest film has revealed itself to us. Making a movie about Dick Cheney would be a risky endeavor for anyone, though McKay is pretty fearless. As such, we have an A-list filled look at one of the most controversial men of the 20th and 21st centuries. In addition, we potentially have a very Academy Award friendly flick. More on that in a bit, and of course you’ll be able to see the Trailer at the end of this piece, but first…we discuss! The film is, of course, a biopic of Dick Cheney (Christian Bale), in all his shady glory. The official synopsis on IMDb is simply: “The story of Dick Cheney, the most powerful Vice President in history, and how his policies...

Way back in the spring, “It Follows” director David Robert Mitchell started putting together his next movie, “Under The Silver Lake,” and landed a big star for the lead role with Andrew Garfield. The next few months went quiet, but things are gearing up quickly and the director has put together a pretty terrific ensemble for the upcoming picture.
Riley Keough (“The Girlfriend Experience,” “American Honey”), Topher Grace (“Interstellar,” “Truth”), Zosia Mamet (“Girls”), Jimmi Simpson (“Westworld,” “House Of Cards”) are the bigger names joining the crew, with veteran character actor Patrick Fischler, Luke Baines, Callie Hernandez, Riki Lindome, and Don McManus rounding out the cast of the movie that’s now in production.

As Kirsten Dunst gears up for her directorial debut next year with an adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s landmark 1963 novel The Bell Jar, she’s been expanding her cast. With Dakota Fanning on board to lead as Esther Greenwood, Jesse Plemons recently joined, and now ScreenDaily reports that Oscar-winner Patricia Arquette, Bel Powley (The Diary Of A Teenage Girl) and Stacy Martin (Nymphomaniac) have all been added to the ensemble. The story follows Greenwood, who suffers from a mental illness, returning to her Boston home after interning at a magazine in New York City. Production begins early next year for a hopeful festival premiere later in 2017.
In other cast expansions, production has now begun on David Robert Mitchell‘s follow-up to It Follows, the Andrew Garfield-led modern-day noir thriller Under the Silver Lake. We got word earlier this week that Riley Keough (American Honey, Mad Max: Fury Road) had...

Who knew you could get this much mileage out of a ghost named Toby? Nine years ago this week, Oren Peli started production on "Paranormal Activity," which was made for $27, a box of Band-Aids, and three plates of ham sandwiches. Truly independent in every way, the film premiered a year later at ScreamFest, and then… didn't come out for two more years. While "Paranormal Activity" is a remarkable success story, it's also not an instant one. Peli had to struggle to get his film from that first screening to a major theatrical release, and there were plenty of fine-tuning that had to be done to get it there. "Paranormal" has many godfathers, and by the time the film came out in 2009, it had been through many hands. The result, though, has been one of the biggest horror franchises in recent memory, and it laid the foundation for Jason Blum's entire horror empire.

The first and most important thing that happened as a result of the staging of "Sticks and Stones" at the Met Theater as part of the Act One Festival was that Scott Swan and I got our first agent. Barbara Baruch worked for Ambrosio/Mortimer, a smaller boutique agency at the time, and from the moment we met her, she seemed like what I imagined an agent to be. She was nurturing, she was a cheerleader, she was a ballbuster, and she was always, always, always in our corner. Our time with her was unfortunately too short, and by the time the agency imploded in accusations of embezzlement, we were already repped by Gersh out of New York. Barbara was first, though, and she was the first one to start pushing people to come see our show and to read our work. The strangest thing about those early days is...

Lucky Bastard is a website run by Mike (Don McManus) which invites fans to have sex with porn stars. Dave (Jay Paulson) is the latest fan to be selected, and the porn star Ashley Saint (Betsy Rue) is less than happy about doing a scene with an amateur. As the shoot nears and things start getting tense, will Mike get the money shot he expects?

These bastards may not be so lucky.
“Lucky Bastard” pushes the boundaries of thriller cinema into the pornography business. With an Nc-17 rating, the movie looks into the scary side of the pornography business—a possible crazed maniac killer.
In a reality porn footage, a porn web site invites fans with porn stars. A young fan was given the opportunity to have sex with a famous porn star, but the cast and crew ended up with gruesome results.
The movie stars Don McManus (“The Shawshank Redemption”), Jay Paulson (“Mad Men”), Betsy Rue (“My Bloody Valentine”), Chris Wylde (“The Revenant”) and Catherine Annette (“Femme Fatales”). It is directed by Robert Nathan.
Latino-Review was provided an exclusive clip with a scene between Don McManus and Jay Paulson arguing after a failed sex scene.
The movie is currently in limited release in select cities.

Currently available on VOD and arriving in limited theaters this weekend is the wickedly fun and stylish thriller Grand Piano which was directed by Eugenio Mira and stars Elijah Wood, John Cusack, Kerry Bishe, Alex Winter and Don McManus.
Daily Dead recently attended the press day for Grand Piano and had the opportunity to sit down and chat with both Mira and Wood about their collaborative efforts working together on bringing Damien Chazelle’s script to life. Wood also discussed the challenges of performing during several intense piano-playing sequences in Grand Piano and both Mira and Wood offered up their thoughts on the state of modern horror and why we don’t see more ‘grown up’ horror movies like Grand Piano being made these days.
Check out our exclusive video interview below and look for Grand Piano on VOD now and in limited theaters this weekend courtesy of Magnet Releasing.

If you saw Eugenio Mira's earlier film "Agnosia," then you may have already noticed his fondness for Brian De Palma. Anyone making thrillers who holds De Palma as part of the pantheon is already on my short list of people I like, but when you see how well Mira pulls it all together for "Grand Piano," it's obvious that he's graduated to a different level with this film. I think it's very fair to compare this to "Non-Stop," which I reviewed earlier today, since both of them are thrillers that take place over a compressed period of time in a fairly restrictive setting with a ticking clock. For both filmmakers, the exercise is the same. Can you keep the film somewhat plausible while ratcheting up the tension and convincing us that things could unfold like this? In the case of "Grand Piano," the answer is a resounding yes, and...

We’ve all done it. A movie looks interesting, we start reading the synopsis only to realize it’s a found-footage flick, and we immediately turn and run the other direction. It’s a natural reaction as roughly 96% of all found-footage thrillers are for crap thanks to their consistently similar “plots” and utter apathy towards explaining the presence of the camera(s) in anything resembling a logical way. Which is why movies that dodge both of those bullets are deserving of a second glance. Lucky Bastard deserves that second glance. Mike (Don McManus) produces a web-based porn show called “Lucky Bastard” that picks one hopeful fan and films them having their way with a living, breathing porn star beauty. The latest winner is Dave (Jay Paulson), a shy but enthusiastic viewer whose anticipation at the prospect of having sex with Ashley Saint (Betsy Rue) leads to some premature bubbling over of excitement. That...

Found-footage thrillers share a lot of qualities with "amateur" porn — handheld cameras, unscripted reactions, and a better-than-average chance that you won't want to watch more than 10 minutes of it.
So how does Lucky Bastard, which combines the two genres, manage to be so good? A solid cast, led by Betsy Rue (as porn star Ashley Saint) and Don McManus (as producer Mike), is the key, performing a sharp, character-driven script by Lukas Kendall and director Robert Nathan.
Mike persuades Ashley to appear on his Lucky Bastard website, in which a "lucky" fan gets the chance to screw a porn star. The gag is, of course, that none of the Bastards are up to a porn-level performance, so they wind up humiliated on video.

The intensity of Speed mixed with the classical beauty of Mozart’s “Symphony No. 40″ – Grand Piano in a nutshell. I know it’s hard to imagine some type of fruitful marriage between a Keanu Reeves movie and technically masterful key-tickling, but when the increasingly intriguing Elijah Wood is the nervous victim of some gun-toting psycho’s sinister plan, you’ve grabbed my full attention – especially after such a commanding performance in Maniac. Maestro Eugenio Mira conducts a thrilling bit of cinema accompanied by flowing scoring from writer Damien Chazelle, but it’s Wood’s performance that’s most worthy of an appreciative standing ovation. Bravissimo!

“Found footage” horror and pornography – why hasn’t someone thought of this already? What a refreshing point of view considering this increasingly stale, lifeless genre – Ok, hold on, are we all watching the same horror movies? Mindless sex, fleshy nudity, and exploited women have been as prominent in horror as the killings themselves, so I’m a tad bit confused over all the “originality” praise surrounding Lucky Bastard. Sure, writer/director Robert Nathan marries sexual perversion and “found footage” tropes for a “new” type of horror, but man, we’ve all seen pornos, right? Do you really want that kind of acting on screen for an hour and a half? While they aren’t even gettin’ jiggy wit’ it? I’d love to make a punny remark about a script that blows its wad far too soon (I suppose I just did?), but without any resemblance of a satisfactory money shot,...

One of the keys to nailing a "found footage" movie is to give your audience a good reason as to why cameras are always running -- even when mass carnage is underway. It's not always believable that a woman would hang on to a video camera while she's being chased by a raving maniac, but it is sort of believable if your horror movie is about a low-rent porno production whose very gimmick is to film everything. And, yes, the "Lucky Bastard" porno site most definitely aims to film "everything." Surely that's enough of a hook to hang a movie on, right? Found footage, on a no-budget porno set, and the no-name nobody (aka the "lucky bastard") who gets to bed the sexy starlet is, of course, seriously unhinged and just about to explode in a tornado of impotent fury. So given that the head honcho wants everything filmed, and...

I thought the first poster achieved a greater, more serene and at once, chilling effect, showing Wood from the back, surrounded by darkness. This one comes across a bit too much like Red Lights, another excellent film starring Cillian Murphy and Robert De Niro. Also on board the cast are Kerry Bishé, Tamsin Egerton, Alex Winter, Allen Leech, Dee Wallace, Don McManus and Don Kress. Taking a page out of the book of incredible film history feats like High Noon, the bulk of the movie takes place in near-real time over the course of a high stakes classical music concert.
