Rome’s growing Mia market, dedicated to international TV series, feature films and documentaries, has secured a rich roster of fresh international product in various stages and announced a clutch of prominent U.S. and European execs set to make the trek for the mostly in-person Oct. 13-17 event.
While companies such as ITV Studios, Banijay and Fremantle are either bowing out or reducing their presence at the Oct. 11-14 Mipcom market in Cannes — and the AFM has gone entirely online — Mia seems to be succeeding in luring a robust group of international industry heavyweights. Branded entertainment vet Stuart McLean has launched Fast Studios, a new business aiming to capitalize on the quickly growing programming sector known as Fast — free, ad-supported television channels.
As more companies aim to launch their own Fast channels to be distributed on platforms such as ViacomCBS’ Pluto TV and Comcast’s Xumo, Fast Studios is pitching itself as an investor and operator to handle day-to-day services like scheduling, marketing, distribution and ad sales.
“I think the reality now of these Fast channels, with technology today, just about anybody can start a channel,” McLean said. “But you need at least ten new jobs to run that channel. You need your programming department, you need your marketing department, you need your distribution department, ad sales, all of those traditional roles now are important because you need to support a 24/7 linear channel.

CBS has picked up Vinyl Cafe, an animated pilot presentation from Phil Rosenthal, creator and executive producer of the network's hit comedy Everybody Loves Raymond. On the pilot casting front, Oscar winner Olympia Dukakis has joined CBS' comedy Center of the Universe, while Richard Ruccolo has been tapped to co-star opposite Jane Krakowski in CBS' comedy pilot Taste, with Andy Cadiff on board to direct. Additionally, Adam Goldberg has come on board CBS' untitled Aisha Tyler comedy pilot, Eddie McClintock has joined Fox's comedy pilot The Robinson Brothers, and Jonathan Frain has been tapped to play Brutus in ABC's drama series Empire. Vinyl Cafe, from Paramount Network TV, is based on short stories by Stuart McLean, a top Canadian broadcast personality and best-selling author.
