22 September 2016 6:00 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched the Season 13 premiere of “Grey’s Anatomy,” which aired Thursday, Sept. 22 on ABC.

“Grey’s Anatomy” returned Thursday night, and after the entire summer hiatus, the Season 13 premiere picked up right where the show left off — literally on the night of the Season 12 finale at Owen (Kevin McKidd) and Amelia’s (Caterina Scorsone) wedding when meanwhile, Karev (Justin Chambers) punched DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) over a misunderstanding with Jo (Camilla Luddington).

Thursday night’s episode got into the aftermath of that night, and to put it lightly, Karev got himself into some big trouble.

Turns out, Karev violently beat DeLuca because he thought he was pushing himself onto Jo. In actuality, viewers know that DeLuca was just taking care of a drunk Jo, after she revealed to him that she is married to an abusive man whom she cannot divorce — but Karev does not know that, and »

15 Things You Never Knew About Grey's Anatomy

6 July 2016 4:00 PM, PDT | POPSUGAR | See recent BuzzSugar news »

If you're a Grey's Anatomy fan, there's probably not much you don't know about the show. But seeing as we're in the doldrums of Summer, we thought we'd put together some of the lesser-known facts about the medical drama. If you do already know some of these trivia bits, then pat yourself on the back, because we dug deep. The guts and gore you see on screen are not human but are in fact a mix of cow organs, chicken fat, and red jello. Fun! Rob Lowe was offered the role of Dr. Derek Shepherd but turned it down to star in a CBS drama called Dr. Vegas, which was canceled after five episodes. Kevin McKidd (aka Dr. Owen Hunt) is Scottish, and hearing his accent will mess you up. Miranda Bailey was the only role written with a character description ("tiny with blonde curls"), but when Chandra Wilson auditioned for the role, »

Cinemax is in the early stages of developing Brian Michael Bendis comic book “Scarlet” as a series, Robert Doherty inks 3-year deal with CBS and more in Friday’s TV news roundup.

Development

Cinemax is currently developing a TV adaptation of “Scarlet,” based on Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev’s comic of the same name, published under Marvel’s Icon imprint. According to Deadline, Bendis announced, albeit coyly, at the Atx Television Festival in Austin that the property was being developed by HBO, but Variety has confirmed that it will be developed for Cinemax, which is owned by the premium cable network. The comic follows a rebellious protagonist named Scarlet Rue who ends up sparking a new American revolution. Bendis also co-created “Jessica Jones” and “Powers,” both of which have been adapted for TV. Development for “Scarlet” is in the early stages.

Deals

Rob Doherty, creator, executive producer and showrunner of CBS’ “Elementary,” has signed a new three-year deal with CBS Television Studios. He will continue as showrunner on “Elementary,” which is heading into its fifth season, and will supervise new projects for CBS TV. The news was first reported by Deadline.

“Grey’s Anatomy” actors Justin Chambers, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens, Jr. and Kevin McKidd have renewed their deals and will return to the ABC drama for the upcoming 13th season. They’ve signed on after star Ellen Pompeo inked her deal to return and Sara Ramirez confirmed her departure from the show.

First Look

Disney Xd and Lego have released the first trailer for “Lego Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures,” which takes place in the period between “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.” On June 11 at 8 p.m. on YouTube, Instagram star Zack King will be hosting a “Brick-Building” event where fans can get a sneak peek of the upcoming animated series.

Dates

PBS announced that “The Great British Baking Show” will return for Season 3 on July 1 at 9 p.m. on the network. The competition show, which features amateur bakers vying to be the best all-around baker, will feature returning judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood joined by hosts Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc.

Jessica Capshaw, Kevin McKidd Originally Auditioned for Different ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Roles

10 June 2016 2:08 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Dr. Owen Hunt and Dr. Arizona Robbins are staples in the world of “Grey’s Anatomy,” but the actors behind the TV characters were almost cast in different roles.

Kevin McKidd and Jessica Capshaw have played Owen and Arizona, respectively, since the fifth season of Shondaland’s hit medical drama, which is heading into its 13th season, but they originally auditioned for different parts.

Capshaw first auditioned for the part of Nurse Rose, a love interest to Patrick Dempsey’s Dr. Derek Shepherd in seasons four and five, who was ultimately portrayed by actress Lauren Stamile.

Jessica Capshaw came in for Nurse Rose,” Shondaland producer Betsy Beers revealed on Friday during her panel at the Atx Television Festival in Austin, Texas. “Jessica came in for Nurse Rose and did a chemistry read with Patrick … we fell in love with Jessica Capshaw.”

Reminding the room of the character, Beers said, “Nurse Rose was a nurse who Derek (Patrick Dempsey) had a brief relationship with and it didn’t really end up going anywhere.” With a laugh, the producer added, “Nurse Rose ended up going to probably another hospital. That’s my guess. She’s probably on like ‘Chicago Med!'”

As for McKidd, he also auditioned for “Grey’s” well before actually joining the show, and Shonda Rhimes brought him back later when she developed the Owen character.

“One of the things that happens a lot in Shondaland is that we meet actors and love them, but they’re just not perfect for that part,” Beers said. “We met Kevin McKidd generally for a couple of different parts for him, until she created the role of Owen.”

Sharing one of her all-time favorite auditions, Beers brought up Katie Lowes, who now plays Quinn on “Scandal.” Beers revealed that she and Rhimes first met Lowes when she auditioned for Shondaland’s short-lived drama “Off the Map,” which aired in 2011.

Katie Lowes, we originally met because she came in for a show called ‘Off the Map.’ She came really, really close. We loved her, but she just didn’t end up being right for the role,” Beers said. “For ‘Scandal,’ Katie Lowes came in to read for the role of Quinn. … We knew it immediately. The network and the studio all agreed we didn’t have to audition anyone else.”

Though the Shondaland team knew that Lowes got the part from the moment she walked in the room, Beers and Rhimes put Lowes through the ringer just a bit.

“We brought her in and she thought she was doing another audition,” Beers recalled. “It’s one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen because you could see all the expressions of death and dying, but backwards, to oh-my-god to oh-my-god to tears and tears to running up to each of us and hugging us and making the slightly unfortunate statement that this was the best thing that ever happened to her — and she just got engaged.”
