Tracey Ullman Says Her New HBO Sketch Series is the Antidote to TV’s Rash of Bleak Comedies

Tracey Ullman just can’t help herself.

Every few years, the comedian has the urge to create another sketch comedy TV show. Her latest effort, BBC’s “Tracey Ullman’s Show,” arrives stateside Friday night on HBO.

Fans of Fox’s “Tracey Ullman Show,” HBO’s “Tracey Takes On” and Showtime’s “Tracey Ullman’s State of the Union” will find all the hallmarks of Ullman’s series: Spot-on impersonations, quirky original characters and some song and dance.

“I just can’t be one person, it’s ridiculous,” Ullman told IndieWire. “I just love this [sketch comedy] form, and every seven years or so it seems, I get it together and I impersonate the age group around me that gets old with me. I enjoy being different people.”

Unlike those past shows, “Tracey Ullman’s Show” was produced in the U.K. for British audiences. It was Ullman’s first BBC project in 30 years. »

Tracey Ullman Sketches Out Her Next Chapter With New HBO/BBC Series

27 October 2016 1:00 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Tracey Ullman is known as the woman of a thousand characters, but there’s a autobiographical thread running through her latest effort, “Tracey Ullman’s Show,” which premieres Friday on HBO.

The opening credit sequence tells the story: Ullman dances around a bedroom in pajamas, singing an 80s-esque pop tune into a hairbrush microphone with an 8-year-old doppelganger. That’s meant to be a tribute to her mother, Doreen, who died at age 85 in March 2015. Ullman credits her career as an actress and master of impersonation to the “shows” she used to put on as a child for her mother.

“The ‘Tracey Ullman Show’ really started in her bedroom,” Ullman tells Variety. “I used to dance on her windowsill. It’s just what I’ve always done.”

Ullman has spent much of the past few years in England, after three decades in the U.S. Her husband of 30 years, producer Allan McKeown, died »

Tracey Ullman returns to BBC with first television series in 30 years

8 January 2016 10:47 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

British comedian whose self-titled show made her a hit in the Us will make first appearance on BBC1 since starring in Girls on Top in 1985

On 19 April 1987 a British comedian, largely unknown in the Us beyond a solitary top 10 hit single, made her debut on a brand new American TV network, called Fox.

Tracey Ullman was a successful TV performer and singer in Britain – best known for Three of a Kind, Girls on Top and putting Neil Kinnock in the video to her song My Guy . But the veteran American producer James L Brooks, having been shown some of her work, was so wowed he thought she could take on the Us too, and offered to produce a TV sketch show for the fledgling channel.
