The Smallest Show On Earth: In Memory Of The Bijou (1957) And The Alger (1940-2015)

18 June 2016 10:07 AM, PDT | Trailers from Hell | See recent Trailers from Hell news »

The delightful British comedy The Smallest Show on Earth headlines a great Saturday matinee offering from the UCLA Film and Television Archive on June 25 as their excellent series “Marquee Movies: Movies on Moviegoing” wraps up. So it seemed like a perfect time to resurrect my review of the movie, which celebrates the collective experience of seeing cinema in a darkened, and in this case dilapidated old auditorium, alongside my appreciation of my own hometown movie house, the Alger, which opened in 1940 and closed last year, one more victim of economics and the move toward digital distribution and exhibition.

“You mean to tell me my uncle actually charged people to go in there? And people actually paid?” –Matt Spenser (Bill Travers) upon first seeing the condition of the Bijou Kinema, in The Smallest Show on Earth

Golden Years review – pensioners-turn-crims comedy

28 April 2016 1:15 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

There are the seeds of something interesting in this cack-handed comedy, but the talent – including Virginia McKenna and Simon Callow – are ill-served

Related: Nick Knowles: 'I can’t go to Cannes because I’m recording a Saturday-night quiz show'

“Banks, bowls … and bingo” is the tagline of the pensioners-turn-crims comedy – and it’s cack-handedness offers an early clue to the botched plot and groaning dialogue to come (the script is courtesy of Diy Sos star Nick Knowles). Bernard Hill and Virginia McKenna play Arthur and Martha Good – again, a bad sign, that – whose happy retirement is threatened after his pension pot is suddenly depleted. Erratic slapstick involving a shopping trolley means Arthur inadvertently robs a security guard, then continues his spree after he realises he’s due it all really and he can bail out similarly disenfranchised pals – including Simon Callow as a Welsh am-dram aficionado who gets his »

The Story Behind the $102 Million Donald Trump Says He's Given to Charity

Ever since he kicked off his presidential campaign last June, billionaire businessman Donald Trump has touted his history of giving to good causes, with his campaign saying he's donated more than $102 million to charity over the past five years. But according to a new Washington Post analysis, not one of those donations was a personal gift from the Gop front-runner's own money. Many of the thousands of gifts cited on a 93-page list Trump's campaign provided to the Associated Press last year were free rounds of golf, donated by his courses for charity auctions and raffles, The Post reports. MipTV 2016 Wrap: Big Euro Pay TVs, High-End Drama and Millennials Dominate Trade Fair

7 April 2016 8:34 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Cannes – Europe’s two biggest pay TVs – Vivendi’s Canal Plus and Sky – international’s high-end drama push and trad TV’s millennial outreach made much of running – in news and trends – at a 2016 MipTV market which offered genuine insight on how some of the biggest TV companies in the world outside the U.S. are meeting the digital challenge.

Vivendi, Sky and Rtl held center stage – literally when honchos Dominique Delport, Guillaume de Posch and Jeremy Darroch made keynotes or fielded Q & As at the Palais des Festivals Grand Auditorium, later to receive Variety’s Achievement in Intl. Television Award.

But the event’s more conventional real stars were perhaps its YouTubers, led by Michelle Phan, supernovas for their fans and now more comfortably on the radar of an established TV industry which is discovering ways of handling digital natives.

Meanwhile, at a 2016 Mip TV market energized by a one-day MipDrama Screenings, »
