Pop Chief Talks Expanding Network’s Identity

31 July 2016 3:40 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Pop, the joint venture from CBS and Lionsgate, is ramping up its original programming slate. The network’s slate of scripted series now includes four series set to air in the next year — three comedies and a horror drama, “Wolf Creek.” As the network expands its scope, it is also attempting to expand its identity.

“One of the things I’ve been pleasantly surprised at is the elasticity that our brand has had,”  Pop president Brad Schwartz said Sunday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. “We spent a lot of time building the brand and throwing it out into the world. You never quite know how it’s going to live.”

CBS and Lionsgate relaunched the former TV Guide Network last year as Pop, shifting the focus of the channel under Schwartz to one focused on original programming rooted in fan culture. “Wolf Creek,” and Australian acquisition, appears to be a departure from that identity »

Pop has given an eight-episode series order to “The Joey Mac Project,” a scripted show starring Joey McIntyre of New Kids on the Block.

The half-hour comedy stars McIntyre as a fictionalized version of himself — a former boy-band singer trying to transition to a career in acting. McIntyre serves as executive producer along with Donnie Wahlberg, Jenny McCarthy, Tim Gibbons (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”), Paul Greenberg (“Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris”) and Jenny Daly (“Storage Hunters,” “Hollywood and Football”).

“I lucked out. What are the chances of me being cast as a character named Joey McIntyre?” said McIntyre. “But in all seriousness, if you love to laugh, we have a comedy gold team behind this project who have the secret sauce for funny TV…yes, I just said that.”

Produced by T Group Productions, “The Joey Mac Project” joins a slate of original scripted series on Pop that includes returning comedy “Schitt’s Creek,” upcoming »

Upfront 2016: Pop Moves to Woo Ad Dollars From Oxygen, Bravo, Lifetime

21 March 2016 6:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Pop, the young cable network, wants to give its rivals a pop of their own — right in the eye.

The cable outlet backed by CBS Corp. and Lionsgate that was once best known as the TV Guide Network, is making a pitch to advertisers this year suggesting they ought to take some of the dollars earmarked for female-skewing rivals like Oxygen, Bravo and Lifetime, and instead shift them to its programs.

“Our ratings are growing, and most of the industry is going in the other direction,” said Brad Schwartz, the network’s president, in an interview last week. Executives will emphasize a slate of programming that Schwartz said will lack the snark and cat-fighting that is so prevalent on other networks. “We are not doing ‘Snapped’ and ‘Bad Girls Club’ and housewives and rich kids,” he said. Pop’s plan to is to tout programs that appeal to fans of various topics, »

‘A Night at Sardi’s’ Closes With Jason Alexander, Eric McCormack, Steven Weber and a ‘Big Bang’

“Tonight we honor Peter Grad, who passed away suddenly last summer,” began David Hyde Pierce on Wednesday at the final “A Night at Sardi’s” benefit — founded by Laurie Burrows (daughter of playwright Abe Burrows) and her late husband Grad (an Mtm Television executive) 23 years prior, to support the Alzheimer’s Association. “His example as a charitable and loving man inspires us and lives with any of us who ever came in contact with him. Many of his jokes live with us too, and for that, we will never forgive him.”

What will also clearly live on is the “A Night at Sardi’s” legacy, evidenced by the loyal alum from Peter Gallagher to Jason Alexander to Eric McCormack — “No one had ever heard of me when this first began!” McCormack said — who returned to reenact their favorite numbers, which helped to generate $28 million over the 23 years, for the show »
