Channel 4 defends Utopia series 2 following Airey Neave controversy

14 July 2014 3:55 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

Channel 4 has defended its drama series Utopia after its second series came under harsh criticism.

The show presents a fictionalised account of the final days of politician Airey Neave, played by Tim McInnerny.

In 1979, Neave was killed by a car bomb planted by the Irish National Liberation Army (Inla) - though Utopia suggests that the bomb was in fact the work of fictitious organisation The Network.

Neave's children called for the show to be "banned" in an interview with The Mail on Sunday.

"I am upset and I would dearly like to protect my father's reputation from lies and fabrication," said son William. "It seems that when somebody dies, people can say whatever they like. We would love to stop it from airing."

Utopia also uses archive footage of the aftermath of the car bomb, a decision that Neave's elder son Patrick said was "in incredibly poor taste".

Film Review: ‘Castles in the Sky’

25 June 2014 12:43 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

“Making the invisible visible” is the objective that Scottish physicist Robert Watson-Watt repeatedly claims to pursue in “Castles in the Sky.” It’s also what Gillies MacKinnon’s staid but affable biopic seeks to do for its human subject, placing a soft spotlight on a little-portrayed figure whose greatest innovation — radar technology — is so essential as to be easily taken for granted. Focusing on Watson-Watt’s collaboration with the British air ministry prior to the outbreak of the Second World War, this blandly crafted BBC production counts on star Eddie Izzard’s warm eccentricity to animate dry material; bound for television screens at home, the Edinburgh fest premiere will raise only modest ancillary airwaves elsewhere.

The film’s opening credit sequence, with its typewritten text and bloodstained archive images of Nazi activity, establishes that we’re very much in war-by-numbers territory here, and some distance from the sensory specificity of MacKinnon’s 1997 Wwi drama, »

Photo: Kit Harington In "Spooks" Film

14 April 2014 7:32 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Though often dubbed "the British '24", one thing that made long-running BBC spy series "Spooks" (aka. "Mi-5") different was that it wasn't afraid to randomly kill off its major characters - going through at least three leading men (Matthew Macfadyen, Richard Armitage, Rupert Penry-Jones).

Now, the series is jumping to the big screen with "Spooks: The Greater Good" and today Empire has released the first photo from the movie which has essentially been made so that newcomers to the property can enjoy it.

"Pompeii" and "Game of Thrones" star Kit Harington takes on the lead role as Will Crombie who is brought in to investigate the truth behind the apparent death of embattled section chief Harry Pearce (Peter Firth) who was seen jumping from a bridge into the Thames following a scandal involving an escaped terrorist. Crombie must learn the truth about Pearce's disappearance and the crisis at the heart of Britain's counter-terrorism agency. »
