Christiansen's thriller The Roommate (top); Rhys Wakefield, Josh McGuire in Alister Grierson's 3D adventure/thriller Sanctum, executive-produced by Avatar's James Cameron (bottom) Sony / Screen Gems' The Roommate topped the ho-hum North American box office on Friday, Feb. 4, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Christian E. Christiansen's thriller took in $6.4m at 2,534 locations on its first day out. The Roommate's per-theater average was an acceptable $2,526, though chances are that things will go downhill from here as this is Super Bowl weekend. Most critics didn't get to see The Roommate, but among those that did weren't exactly impressed; Christiansen's thriller has an embarrassing 9% approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes. The tale of a college freshman obsessed with her roommate, The Roommate features Leighton Meester, Minka Kelly, Twilight's Cam Gigandet, Matt Lanter, and Billy Zane.
