According to reports writer D.V. DeVincentis ("High Fidelity") will script Disney's upcoming adaptation of the TV series "The Night Stalker", to star actor Johnny Depp for director Edgar Wright.
First airing over ABC during the 1974-75 TV season, the original series, considered the inspiration for "The X-Files", followed 'Kolchak' (Darren McGavin), who investigated mysterious crimes with supernatural causes, particularly those crimes that law enforcement authorities and city officials won't pursue.
Often these crimes involved elements of the occult or science fiction, including 'fantastical' creatures.
The 'Kolchak' character originated in the novel, "The Kolchak Papers" by author Jeff Rice. In the novel, Las Vegas newspaper reporter Carl Kolchak tracks down and defeats a killer who turns out to be a vampire named 'Janos Skorzeny'.
During the series' run, "The Night Stalker" managed to tackle most of the major monster myths, including vampires, werewolves, mummies and zombies. It also included stories about a doppelganger, »

Interest in Johnny Depp’s attempt to bring cult supernatural TV series / movies The Night Stalker to the big screen surged in February, when it was announced that one Edgar Wright would be lending his directorial vision to the project. We wondered when things would get moving on the development front, and now comes word that High Fidelity co-writer D.V. DeVincentis has been hired to work on the script. While the original Darren McGavin-starring TV movies spawned a show that only ran for one season, the compelling concept quickly gained a fevered following when the series hit syndication across the pond.Stalker follows Carl Kolchak, a Chicago-based reporter who investigates weird crimes and usually ends up tangling with otherworldly creatures. Depp would be stepping into Kolchak’s shoes, though we don’t know what threat he’ll yet be facing. Perhaps the more supernatural elements shed from The Lone Ranger »

D.V. DeVincentis, known for his screenplays Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity, has been hired to write The Night Stalker for director Edgar Wright and star Johnny Depp.
From Walt Disney Pictures, the movie is based on the cult ABC TV series of the same name that ran from 1974 to 1975. Johnny Depp will assume the role of Carl Kolchak, a character originally played by A Christmas Story's Old Man Darren McGavin. Kolchak works as a reporter for the Chicago-based independent News Service Stories, and deals mostly with supernatural subjects.
Johnny Depp will produce alongside Christi Dembrowski through their joint production banner. The film is slated to be Edgar Wright's next after The World's End, but there are rumors, perpetuated by the director himself, that his Marvel adventure Ant-Man might squeeze in front of The Night Stalker.

The Night Stalker has gotten one step closer to production. Walt Disney Pictures has hired D.V. DeVincentis to pen the script. Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) will direct his biggest project to date, on this starring vehicle for Johnny Depp. Depp and his Infinitum Nihil partner Christi Dembrowski are producing, and David Kennedy will serve as exec producer.
The Night Stalker began as a TV movie that aired on ABC, based on a novel which was adapted by famed screenwriter Richard Matheson. It starred Darren McGavin as investigative reporter Carl Kolchak who goes to Las Vegas to pursue a serial killer. Only when he discovers the bodies of the killer's victims, he realizes it is the work of a vampire. As a child, Depp was reportedly infatuated with the TV movie series.
This sounds like a great team for a cool movie. Wright in the directors chair will insure pure awesomeness. »

One of the more intriguing announcements of the year has been the potential team-up between megastar Johnny Depp and Edgar Wright, the director behind "Shaun of the Dead," "Hot Fuzz" and "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World," on "The Night Stalker." The film would be a remake of the 1970s Darren McGavin-starring TV movie and subsequent show about Carl Kolchak, a reporter investigating supernatural and science-fiction based cases. Depp's output has been disappointing of late, but if anyone can reinvigorate the actor, it's Wright, in his first brush with a major A-list star.
The film certainly isn't coming in the immediate future: Wright has both "The World's End" and "Ant-Man" brewing before the end of the year. But it's something that they're serious about, as the duo, and studio Disney, have just hired a writer for the project. According to Heat Vision, D.V. DeVincentis, who co-wrote the scripts for John Cusack »

D.V. DeVincentis has been brought aboard Walt Disney Pictures' big-screen version of The Night Stalker , says a story at The Hollywood Reporter . Produced in conjunction with his Infinitum Nihil, Johnny Depp is attached to headline with Edgar Wright directing. The Night Stalker originally aired as a TV movie in 1972 and featured Darren McGavin as a Carl Kolchak, a reporter who, while tracking down a serial killer, finds that he's really going toe-to-toe with a vampire. A sequel, "The Night Strangler," aired in 1973 with a television series "Kolchak: The Night Stalker" airing the following year. While the "Night Stalker" of the title referred to the Vampire, the term became associated with protagonist instead. Coincidentally, the same is true of »

DeVincentis' previous writing credits include 1997's Grosse Pointe Blank, 2000's High Fidelity, 2012's Lay the Favorite and the currently in development King Dork. The Night Stalker originally starred Darren McGavin as reporter Carl Kolchak, who continually finds himself in the position of uncovering supernatural threats that he desperately tries to expose via his writing - though he's inevitably thwarted from doing so. The concept began in the imagination of writer Jeff Rice, and was adapted to television by Dark Shadows' Dan Curtis as a 1972 TV movie in which Kolchak discovers a vampire in Las Vegas. For 1973's The Night Strangler, Kolchak relocates to Seattle where he battles a seemingly immortal killer. This was followed by a 20-episode TV series in 1974 titled Kolchak: The Night Stalker and a 2005 reboot starring Stuart Townsend and produced by The X-Files' Frank Spotnitz. »

Dark Shadows, director Tim Burton's adaptation of the late 1960s-early 70s soap opera, didn't exactly have the kind of opening weekend that Burton, Warner Bros. and star Johnny Depp were hoping for, but that hasn't slowed down the adaptation of The Night Stalker, an even more obscure property that began as a 1970s ABC TV movie starring Darren McGavin and eventually became the TV series Kolchak: The Night Stalker that originally aired from 1974-75. Depp and his Infinitum Nihil production company started developing the movie for Disney last summer, and hired director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) in February to "oversee and develop" The Night Stalker. The first step, obviously, was to hire a screenwriter and it looks like Wright and Depp have found him.

Disney continues to move ahead with a big screen adaptation of The Night Stalker and has selected a writer to tackle the screenplay. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that D.V. DeVincentis (High Fidelity, Grosse Pointe Blank) was hired to adapt the 1972 movie and TV series into a big-budget feature film. Darren McGavin played the original Carl Kolchak, a reporter who frequently investigated crimes involving the supernatural.
As previously reported, Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) is attached to direct and Johnny Depp is set to star. This film moving forward is far from a done deal, though. The project is still in the early stages and has not been officially given the green light. Johnny Depp has a number of projects in development and Edgar Wright has Ant-Man and The World’s End on his plate.

After we reported that Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) was set to direct Johnny Depp (Dark Shadows) in the feature film version of The Night Stalker, all that was left to complete was attaching a writer. Surprise! The powers that be have tapped D.V. DeVincentis (High Fidelity) to script the big screen adaptation of the 1970s series. The original show followed Carl Kolchak (Darren McGavin), a Chicago-based tabloid reporter who always seemed to find himself rooting out a supernatural source to the crimes he investigated. The show, created by Jeff Rice, only ran for one season but did well in syndication; well enough that Depp, Wright and now DeVincentis are all attached for the feature treatment. THR reports that DeVincentis is the latest addition to The Night Stalker project, making it the most recent development in his resume that includes the Stephen Frears-directed, Lay the Favorite and the adaptation currently-in-production, »

A week before he died in 2006, author Mickey Spillane turned to his wife and said, “When I’m gone, there’s going to be a treasure hunt around here. Take everything you find and give it to Max – he’ll know what to do.”
“Max” is Max Allan Collins. He was, for a number of reasons, an ideal choice to be the keeper of the Spillane flame.
A fan of Spillane’s since he’d been a kid, Collins had met the mystery writer at a convention in the early 1980s. The connection developed into both friendship and regular collaboration. But Collins was no junior partner in the duo.
Born in Muscatine, Iowa in 1948, he’s been writing mysteries since he was a kid, eventually studying in the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa, one of the most renowned writing programs in the country.

The history of cinema has had many long-running actor/director partnerships. What first springs to my mind is the long collaboration between actor John Wayne and director John Ford, which has inspired several film books and documentaries. More recently we’ve had the Martin Scorsese and Robert DeNiro team-ups ( although Leonardo DiCaprio may just catch up to Mr. D ). And now we have the eighth film that actor Johnny Depp has done with director Tim Burton since they first paired all the way back in 1990 for Edward Scissorhands ( Wow! ). After films based on children’s books, a low-budget filmmaker’s life, and a Broadway musical what have the duo decided to tackle now? Why, it’s a classic cult TV show from the late 1960′s : Dark Shadows. What’s their take on this supernatural soap opera?.
Time for a bit of disclosure here. During its original run on ABC television, »

Destroy the Brain is proud to have Max Allan Collins write up a guest post to explain the character of Mike Hammer and the screen adaptations of this character. We want to thank Tom Green from Titan Books for giving us this great opportunity.
The publication of Lady, Go Die! has elicited Hollywood inquiries as to the possibility of a new Mike Hammer movie. Accompanying this interest comes the usual question, “Who do you think should play Mike Hammer?” Since Mickey Spillane always said that Mike Hammer is a state of mind, my suggestions range from Josh Brolin to Denzel Washington, from Ben Affleck to Jason Statham. I am always open to imaginative casting. Tom Hanks made a great Michael Sullivan in Road to Perdition, after all.
Mickey always complained about the Hollywood movies from his Hammer novels, although he had complimentary things to say about the two TV Hammers, »

Steve Austin was Superman, James Bond and Neil Armstrong rolled into one – how could anyone not watch this show?
"Steve Austin … astronaut … a man barely alive. Gentlemen, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to make the world's first bionic man. Steve Austin will be that man. Better than he was before …better, stronger, faster." Those words, familiar to any child of the 1970s, ushered in the weekly adventures of one of the most popular television heroes of all time. Steve Austin was an irresistible creation: a technologically superpowered spy and astronaut (he sometimes wore an unutterably cool jacket emblazoned with Nasa mission patches). He was Superman, James Bond and Neil Armstrong all rolled into one, and $6m was an almost incomprehensibly large amount of money: how could anyone not watch this show?

When I was a kid, I used to love a scary movie. I remember catching the original The Haunting (1963) one night on Channel 9’s Million Dollar Movie when I was home alone. Before it was over, I had every light in the house on. When my mother got home she was screaming she’d been able to see the house glowing from two blocks away. The only thing screaming louder than her was the electricity meter.
That was something of an accomplishment, scaring me like that. Oh, it’s not that I was hard to scare (I still don’t like going down into a dark cellar). But, in those days, the movies didn’t have much to scare you with. Back as far as the 50s, you might find your odd dismemberment and impaling, even an occasional decapitation, but, generally, the rule of the day was restraint. Even those rare dismemberments, »
