Amazon plans movie about journalism pioneer Ida Tarbell

A film depicting the 1902 battle between the reporter dubbed one of the first ‘muckrakers’ and the industrial magnate John D Rockefeller is set to be made

Ida Tarbell, a film about the pioneering turn-of-the-century journalist who exposed the monopolisation of the oil industry by the Rockefellers, is to be made by Amazon.

The script, which featured on the 2015 Black List of best unproduced screenplays, is by Mark McDevitt; no director or cast has been announced.

Amazon Developing Ida Tarbell-John D. Rockefeller Movie

Amazon Studios is developing a movie about pioneering investigative journalist Ida Tarbell and her battle against industrial magnate John D. Rockefeller.

Amazon has acquired movie rights to Mark McDevitt’s “Ida Tarbell,” which was named to the 2015 Black List, and set it up with Tom Drumm of Think Tank Management & Production. Think Tank manager Kate Hart brought the Tarbell script into the company and will be an associate producer on the project.

Ida Tarbell” is the first feature sale for McDevitt, an Irish writer who moved to New York in 1994. The script focuses on Tarbell’s magazine series “The History of the Standard Oil Company,” which explained meticulously how Rockefeller had monopolized the country’s oil business, backed up by thousands of pages of documents and interviews with the corporation’s executives and competitors, government regulators and academic experts.

2015 Black List screenplays revealed
Film execs have voted for their favourite unproduced Us screenplays.

A script about Michael Jackson’s pet chimp Bubbles and a Moon-based roadtrip adventure are both on this year’s Black List of “most liked” unproduced screenplays in Hollywood.

The annual list, which was first published in 2005, surveys around 500 film executives on their favourite unmade scripts, with a typical response rate of 60%.

This year’s list features 81 screenplays, and was revealed in a series of Youtube videos hosted by the likes of Channing Tatum, Ava DuVernay and Lily James.

2015’s top screenplay is Isaac Adamson’s Bubbles, the story of the late pop star Michael Jackson’s life told through the narration of his pep chimp Bubbles.

Previous films on the list include Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire, Tom Hooper’s The King’s Speech and Ben Affleck’s Argo, all of which went on to win best picture Oscars.

Black List 2015 Topped by Michael Jackson Chimp Script, Features JFK Drama
The 2015 Black List, consisting of Hollywood’s top unproduced screenplays, was announced by Reese Witherspoon, Channing Tatum, Catherine Hardwicke, Damon Lindelof, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and other actors, producers, directors and writers via YouTube videos on Monday.

The screenplays were revealed on the Black List’s Twitter and YouTube accounts throughout the morning. This year’s 11th edition consists of 81 scripts. “Selma” director Ava DuVernay announced the very first project, Ridgeway Wilson and Chloe Castellón’s “An African Western.”

Isaac Adamson’s story about Michael Jackson’s chimp, “Bubbles,” led the list with 44 votes. Samuel V. Franco and Evan Kilgore’s “Mayday 109” script about President John F. Kennedy’s World War II days also made the list.
