Blu-Ray Review: Dario Argento’s ‘Inferno’ Deserves Another Look

8 April 2011 9:40 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – If you think studios are fickle now and that the foreign film market is weird, you should know that it’s been that way for a very long time. Take the case of “Inferno,” Dario Argento’s follow-up to his breakthrough film “Suspiria.” Instead of giving it the wide release and support it deserved, the film was buried, barely released theatrically even in New York. Worst of all, critics played along and didn’t give the film nearly the attention they should have, dismissing it probably because it was so different from the first film in the “Three Mothers” trilogy. Time has been kind to “Inferno” and many horror fans have correctly reassessed it as one of Argento’s best. You should do the same now that it’s available on Blu-ray.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0

Blue Underground has done a spectacular job of unearthing ’70s and ’80s horror films for the new format of Blu-ray. »

DVD Playhouse—April 2011

By

Allen Gardner

Hereafter (Warner Bros.) Clint Eastwood’s spiritual thriller follows a trio of characters whose seemingly disparate paths converge: Matt Damon as a blue collar Joe who tries to fight against his psychic powers that see “the other side,” Cecile de France as a journalist who somehow survives the tsunami that crushed Indonesia, and a London schoolboy (Frankie and George McLaren) who seeks answers after losing his twin brother. Like all of Eastwood’s films, the narrative construction is tight as a drum, with solid work by all involved. That said, “solid” would have to be the operative word to describe the proceedings here, as well as “unremarkable” and “uninvolving” on an emotional level. Perhaps we expect too much when we see Clint’s name on a film these days, but that’s the flip side of being one of the best. Blu-ray/DVD combo pack. »

New this Week: ‘Source Code’ and ‘Black Swan (DVD)’

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:

HopRussell Brand, James Marsden, Elizabeth Perkins

InsidiousPatrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Ty Simpkins

Source CodeJake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga

Movie of the Week

Source Code

The Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga

The Plot: A soldier (Gyllenhaal) wakes up in the body of an unknown commuter and is forced to live and relive a harrowing train bombing until he can determine who is responsible for it.

The Buzz: Source Code looks to be a Quantum Leap meets Groundhog Day sci-fi action romp. 35 seconds into the film’s trailer, I half expected Jake Gyllenhaal to utter, “oh boy.” He instead exclaims, “no, no, no, no,” as if to echo my thoughts exactly — I don’t want to see Gyllenhaal act the same “stop the terrorist on the train” scene, over and over and over again.

DVD and Blu-Ray Releases: March 29th - Scream if You Are a Black Swan

28 March 2011 11:55 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

It doesn't matter if you're a black swan or a white swan; we're sure you're going to want to bring home the dementedness that is Natalie Portman's Oscar-winning performance in Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan.

The film also stars Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel, Barbara Hershey and Winona Ryder. If you live in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco or Chicago, you can participate in the Black Swan Experience on April 2nd.

Since Scream 4 is coming out in theaters shortly, it is only appropriate that the Scream trilogy is being re-released in glorious Blu-ray. Bring home the franchise created by Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson that gave the horror genre a booster shot back in the mid 1990s. A trio from the original cast -- Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette -- will be gracing the big screens with a whole new cast soon enough.
