Maurice Sendak: roaring tributes pour in for 'grumpy, magical' writer

9 May 2012 7:50 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The death of the Where the Wild Things Are author Maurice Sendak has prompted a surge of salutes in the book world

The world of books has been roaring its terrible roars in tribute to the much-loved Where the Wild Things Are author Maurice Sendak, who died yesterday at the age of 83. Accolades poured in for the American writer and illustrator, winner of children's books' most prestigious awards, from the Caldecott medal to the Astrid Lindgren memorial award.

"He was unique, grumpy, brilliant, gay, wise, magical and made the world better by creating art in it," said the novelist Neil Gaiman, remembering the first ever Sendak book he read, In the Night Kitchen, a dream fantasy in which Mickey falls through the dark into the Night Kitchen and discovers three bakers making a cake.

Gaiman also read Sendak's Outside Over There, in which a baby is kidnapped by goblins, to his daughter every night. »

Daily Briefing. Bill Morrison, Winsor McCay, Gregory Markopoulos

9 February 2012 1:34 AM, PST | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

The Miners' Hymns (2011) is "an elegant, elegiac found-footage work from Bill Morrison, best known for his silent-film reverie Decasia," writes Manohla Dargis in the New York Times. "A miner himself of a type, Mr Morrison has dug into the archives of the likes of the British Film Institute to cull primarily black-and-white images so rich, so alive with dirty faces, shadows and the occasional pit pony that they resurrect a world that for many has long been lost to history." It screens from today through Tuesday at Film Forum with three of Morrison's shorts, previewed by Cinespect's Ryan Wells. Release (2010) "uses found footage of the 1930 release of Al Capone from Philadelphia's Eastern State Penitentiary," while Outerborough (2005) "gorgeously catches a ride on a trolley making its voyage across the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan. Morrison gives us a split screen with two perspectives: a camera facing Brooklyn, another looking back at Manhattan. »

Rango Takes Top Prize at 2012 Annie Awards

6 February 2012 10:27 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

As we all know, a year without a strong Pixar movie is a year where other studios have a rare opportunity to get some recognition for their own animated features. Since Cars 2 was not even nominated for an Academy Award this year, we've now got DreamWorks and Paramount battling it out against a couple of smaller foreign productions. However, while the Academy Awards are what most of the world uses to judge the best animated film of the year, industry insiders typically look to the Annie Awards instead. In the past, DreamWorks has had their fair share of success at the Annies (How to Train Your Dragon won out over Toy Story 3 last year, while Kung Fu Panda upset Wall-e in 2008), but this year, newcomers Paramount and Ilm have taken the title for Rango. Go figure! It's probably not a huge surprise that Rango won Best Animated Feature, especially »

Jennifer Yuh Nelson's "Kung Fu Panda 2" dominated the Annie Awards nominations, but the International Animated Film Society decided to give its highest honor -- the Best Animated Feature award -- to Gore Verbinski's "Rango." Both films are from DreamWorks Animation and they still have to duke it out at the upcoming Oscars in the Best Animated Feature Film category.

Besides the Best Animated trophy, "Rango" also collected awards for Best Editing and Writing. But Nelson, the first woman to direct a feature film animation from a major Hollywood production company, won the Directing in a Feature Production award! Yay!
