‘Carol’ Producer Christine Vachon on Gay Marriage Ruling: ‘It’s Extraordinary’

Producer Christine Vachon reacted on Friday morning to the landmark Supreme Court ruling that legalized gay marriage.

“I think it’s extraordinary,” Vachon told Variety in a phone call just minutes after the decision was announced. “This Supreme Court, I was never sure about. But I could tell that this was swiftly becoming one of the things that had a certain inevitability.”

Vachon, who runs Killer Films, is responsible for some of the most high-profile movies in recent years with three-dimensional Lgbt characters, including “Boys Don’t Cry,” “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” “Far From Heaven” and “Carol,” the romance starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

“When we first started making movies that had any gay or queer subject matter, we were serving audiences that were so underserved,” Vachon said. “The big shift I saw, for example, was with ‘Boys Don’t Cry. »
