Newswire: The A.V. Club celebrates its hometown with Chicago Week

10 hours ago | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Chicago has been getting a lot of grief as of late, with our so-called president recently threatening to send in the feds to deal with area crime, and calling our fair city “so sad a situation.” Even Sean Spicer—well, Melissa McCarthy as Sean Spicer—cites an 80-percent murder rate. Since Chicago is where The A.V. Club resides, we decided it was time to pay homage to this amazing metropolis and some of the many pop-cultural institutions that also call it home. Today, we have Sean O’Neal’s look at the High Fidelity soundtrack, and Noel Murray’s take on a very special episode of The Untouchables. The week’s Watch This series on Chicago movies kicks off with a classic: Uncle Buck.

Later in the week, we have Ignatiy Vishnevetsky’s exploration of Chicago crime films, Gwen Ihnat’s oral history on the great Midwestern alt-rock bands »

‘SNL': Is There a New Episode Airing This Week?

17 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

SNL” continues it three-week hiatus through the first day of April, and even though there’s a wealth of political news for “Saturday Night Live” to dig into, fans of the show will have to wait for the sketches. Saturday, April 1 is the last Saturday in the “Saturday Night Live” hiatus that marked most of March. The last new episode featured host Scarlett Johnasson. This weekend, “SNL” will be a re-run rather than a new episode — likely a wise move with the Ncaa Final Four happening that night. Proof The Trump White House is Arrested Development Season 5

24 March 2017 5:00 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

The Trump administration has been compared to at least a million things so far.   We’ve made our characterizations and comparisons of this staff since day one.  Kellyanne Conway got the Fatal Attraction treatment on SNL.   Sean Spicer got the Melissa McCarthy treatment on SNLSteven Bannon has been mocked by Rosie O’Donnell.  Donald Trump has been mocked by everyone imaginable but my personal favorite has got to be Sesame Street. But today’s comparison may very well be the best of the bunch.   According to Av Club Back when it first aired in 2003, Arrested Development’s Bluth family was pretty clearly

Melissa McCarthy Explains How ‘SNL’ Offered Her That Game-Changing Sean Spicer Role

24 March 2017 2:04 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

It’s safe to say that Melissa McCarthy never expected to play Sean Spicer.

The Emmy-winning actress, however, must have been born to play the role. A friend at “Saturday Night Live” thought she looked enough like the White House press secretary to offer her the gig. In an interview on “Ellen,” McCarthy detailed how that phone call went down.

She also reluctantly acknowledged that she resembled Spicer and had this curious observation: “I look so much like my dad that I feel like my dad and Sean Spicer had a baby, and it’s me, which makes it even stranger.”

24 March 2017 11:28 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Although Melissa McCarthy’s impersonation of White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer on “Saturday Night Live” seems like it was a role made for her, she was initially flabbergasted at being asked to fill the role.

During and interview with husband Ben Falcone on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” McCarthy revealed exactly how she came into the role.

“‘SNL’ called and Kent Sublette, one of our old friends from the Groundlings, who is one of the head writers there now, called and he goes, ‘I hear you’re in New York. Do you have any interest in coming in and doing Spicer for us?’” McCarthy said. “I was like ‘What?!’”

In her true fashion, DeGeneres proceeded to pull up side-by-side photos of McCarthy clad in Spicer prosthetic next to an actual photo of the press secretary.

“My dad and Sean Spicer had a baby and it’s me,” McCarthy joked.

DeGeneres then jokingly asked Falcone if he finds »

Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone are easily one of the funniest couples in Hollywood, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that they always have each other in stitches. Perhaps what's even funnier about them is that they're not cracking up at each other's jokes, but rather their quirks. Of course, like any other couple, they can make each other mad. "I think I do things that make her not laugh," Falcone dished on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, airing Friday afternoon. "Is that a sentence?" But The Boss actress confessed that things that would normally drive a person nuts end up making her laugh even harder, adding an interesting dynamic to her marriage with Falcone. "I »

If you’re wondering what the future of women in comedy might look like, consider Caitlin Barlow’s armpits. “We’re painting my armpit hair on for this episode,” she said to IndieWire. “I grew it out for a week, but it wasn’t dark enough.”

That’s just one example of the sort of creative choice made regularly in the course of making “Teachers,” the bold, profane and hilarious comedy created by sketch comedy group the Katydids and executive produced by Ian Roberts and Jay Martel (“Key and Peele”). Having just wrapped the first half of its second season, the TV Land series features Katydids members Barlow, Katy Colloton, Cate Freedman, Kate Lambert, Katie O’Brien and Kathryn Renee Thomas as an eclectic group of educators who work at an elementary school, doing their best not to warp young minds with their outrageous behavior.

SXSW Solidifies TV Boom on Festival Circuit

22 March 2017 1:19 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

This year’s SXSW festival, which wrapped up this past weekend in Austin, served as a launching pad for a number of high-profile TV series, including Showtime’s “I’m Dying Up Here,” AMC’s “The Son,” Starz’s “American Gods” and Netflix’s “Dear White People.”

The annual Texas fest — which is largely known for specializing in music and tech — marks the latest major festival to see an increase in television programming.

“It’s a very, very buzzy place and there’s a reason we keep going back,” says Don Buckley, Showtime’s Evp of program marketing and digital services, who brought two of the cabler’s major properties to SXSW this month: the drama “I’m Dying Up Here,” which hails from executive producer Jim Carrey, and the hotly anticipated revival of “Twin Peaks.”

Buckley says that launching a show at SXSW gives new series a leg-up over the competition.

Ivan Reitman is repeating his promise that the Ghostbusters franchise has not been banished to the spirit world. In a new interview with io9, Reitman explained he’s working on both an animated movie he hopes will be released in 2019 or 2020 and some live-action projects. “We jumped into an animated film [after the last movie] and we are developing live-action films,“ he said. “I want to bring all these stories together as a universe that makes sense within itself. Part of my job right now is to do that.”

It’s unclear if the animated venture to which he’s referring has any relation to the animated television show that’s reportedly in the works called Ghostbuster: Ecto Force. Also unknown: Whether there are any plans to bring back the team led by Melissa McCarthy or whether any of the “live-action films” he alluded to are somehow related ...
