Jared Harris cast in HBO’s Chernobyl miniseries

HBO is set to make a new miniseries called Chernobyl, a five-part series that tells the story of the failed nuclear power plant in Chernobyl that caused a catastrophic disaster in Ukraine and the rest of Europe. And now we have our first piece of casting news, with Mad Men and The Crown actor Jared Harris signing on for the lead role.

Harris will play Valery Legasov, the Soviet scientist chosen by the Kremlin to investigate the accident. The miniseries is written by Craig Mazin and will be directed by Johan Renck and produced by HBO’s President, Miniseries and Cinemax Programming Kary Antholis and executive produced by Caroline Strauss, Jane Featherstone and Mazin.

“From the moment Craig Mazin pitched us the story, we were convinced that this all-too-true tale of horror and redemption needed to be told,” said Antholis. “It will engage — and enrage — our viewers, as well as audiences around the world. »

The network announced that “Chernobyl,” their latest limited series, will follow the aftermath of the 1986 nuclear meltdown that devastated an entire region.

HBO Sets ‘Chernobyl’ Miniseries to Star Jared Harris

HBO has given the greenlight to a miniseries about the Chernobyl disaster to star “Mad Men” alum Jared Harris.

“Chernobyl” is a five-part look at the scientists and others who sacrificed to spare the world from a broader disaster in April 1986 when a reactor exploded at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the Ukraine. Craig Mazin (“The Huntsman: Winter’s War”) penned the scripts and Johan Renck (“Breaking Bad”) is directing.

The mini is set to begin lensing next year in Lithuania. Harris will play Valery Legasov, the scientist chosen by the Kremlin to investigate the accident.

“From the moment Craig Mazin pitched us the story, we were convinced that this all-too-true tale of horror and redemption needed to be told,” said Kary Antholis, president of HBO Miniseries and Cinemax Programming. “It will engage – and enrage – our viewers, as well as audiences around the world.”

Having successfully shed his Parks And Recreation character, the actor now has his fingers in many blockbuster pies. He’s currently working on Jurassic World 2, having seen the first Jurassic World take the box office by storm in 2015; he voiced the character of Emmet Brickowski in The Lego Movie, which means he’ll undoubtedly continue to have an endless stream of sequel opportunities, and he’s the lead in the Guardians Of The Galaxy franchise, forming part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – which means he also gets to be in the next Avengers films, too. Exclusive: Marc Webb and Working Title Developing Three Bags Full Movie?

Director Marc Webb has been especially busy since making two Amazing Spider-Man movies for Sony, released in 2012 and 2014. He has a new movie called Gifted, starring Chris Evans, opening in select cities this Friday, and another one called The Only Living Boy in New York coming out this August.

On top of that, he's also been developing a lot of television shows as executive producer on the Emmy-winning Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and the TV version of Limitless

When speaking with Webb about Gifted recently, Lrm asked him about other projects he's working on.

Besides finishing up Only Living Boy and doing a television pilot with Alan Cumming called Instinct, Webb told us that he's in the early stages of developing a movie with Working Title Films called Three Bags Full.
