The Following Season 2 – Episode 15 Review

Matt Smith reviews the season finale of The Following

Like any good book, The Following had to have a good finale up its sleeve. Without a good ending, any story will lose its audience and everything that came before will be for nought. It’s telling that, even with the speed bumps along the way, The Following still holds excitement and tension within. And, like the dialogue harking back to writers and writing, it’s full of twists and surprises.

With everything in place and prepared for the finale to give its audience a payoff worthy of what’s come in this season and the one before it, Joe Carroll and his followers have a churchful of kidnapped innocents. Ryan Hardy and Mike Weston are clo

The Following Season 2 – Episode 14 Review

Matt Smith reviews episode 14 of The Following season 2…

With the finale of The Following coming up so soon, the themes inherently linked to religion are coming to the fore. It seems that in the latter half of the season, the producers decided to ramp up the religious overtones. They’ve started moving the characters and their respective arcs at a million miles an hour, leading to the now almost obligatory feeling you get at a season finale that things are moving in such a way that they can’t be stopped.

Everyone’s cards are on the table now as the truth comes out. Truth, death, fathers and sons and destiny all come together to create events that Joe Carroll hopes will propel him to immortality. After all, he does see himself as better than an invisible God, and would have an ego to match the great deity if God were human. »

The Following Season 2 – Episode 12 Review

Matt Smith reviews episode 12 of The Following season 2…

Faith is what keeps us coming back for more, even if things get terrible. Sometimes we even feel betrayed, but we get up, brush ourselves off and come back for more in the hope that things will get better. It seems The Following is following that outline to a tee. Last week, The Following revealed it’s religious leaning in regards to its storytelling. Biblical quotes, a feeling of a war being bought about by groups with different beliefs and even the positioning of one of its main characters as a God-like persona with Joe Carroll now at the head of a cult.

This week, the religious war takes on a more overt nature. The introduction of a pastor, Kingston Tanner (played by Tom Cavanagh), gets the attention of Joe Carroll, shaming his cult on television. In a nice touch, Carroll responds »

"The Following" continues to confound us. It seems like each season starts out promisingly, goes off the rails in the middle, and then comes back around at the end. And here we are near the end of Season 2 with Episode 2.13, "The Reaping," on its way. Will it follow the same pattern?

Again we ask: Why the hell does this show need 15 episodes per season? Stick with 12, or 13 at the most, and maybe things will improve. Powers-that-be, are you listening?

In any event, here are some stills and a new promo!

The Following Season 2 - Episode 10 Review

27 March 2014 1:39 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Matt Smith reviews episode 10 of The Following season 2...

In the previous season of The Following, the attempted parallels between producers and the show itself was the use of Joe Carroll as a writer. He’d come up with a plan, which actually involved writing a story, and he’d meticulously organised and thought about the eventualities in order to influence those around him. The producers, writers and directors of the first season must’ve been hoping for the same thing and, for the most part, they accomplished their mission of writing something that would take an audience by the scruff of the neck, surprise them throughout and leave them shocked at the ending the producers had constructed.

This season, a similar parallel can be drawn in concerns to Joe Carroll. Again, there’s an obsession, hopefully connecting both Ryan Hardy and the audience to Carroll’s plan. Hardy, stuck in »

'The Following' Recap: Ryan Teams Up With Carrie Cooke To Try To Trap Joe, Mike Visits Claire Matthews

24 March 2014 9:00 PM, PDT | Uinterview | See recent Uinterview news »

Joe’s hold over his new religious cult strengthened as he began teaching them how to be killers in The Following’s “Teacher’s Pet.”

Claire Matthews Lives

The episode began and ended with Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) in bed with the self-serving-journalist-turned-ally, Carrie Cooke (Sprague Grayden). Meanwhile, Mike (Shawn Ashmore) is secretly meeting with a not-so-dead Claire Matthews (Natalie Zea). Contrary to what Ryan, and the viewers, believed, Claire did not die as a result of the stabbing that ended the first season of The Following. She survived and was put into witness protection with her son. Mike convinced her to go, as she might be targeted by any remaining members from Joe’s killer cult, and lied to Ryan when he told him that Claire had died. Now that Joe is alive and in the public eye, Claire has demanded a meeting with Mike to know what, exactly is going on. »

The Following season 2 episode 9 review: Unmasked

19 March 2014 12:11 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Review Ron Hogan 19 Mar 2014 - 07:06

Camp and brain-rotting it may be, but The Following's second season is always entertaining. Here's Ron's review of Unmasked...

This review contains spoilers.

2.9 Unmasked

I have to say that the one thing missing from Joe's cult last season has been supplied this season thanks to Micah and Julia's little community of berobed killers in the making. It seems like all the classic cults, barring the Manson family, have had a serious religious bent. Joe's first cult was kind of Manson in its genesis, but its execution—a big house full of people and lots of bribery and whatnot of local officials—was more like something out of the Jonestown playbook. This season's cult, Aka Korban, provides some much-needed religious lunacy to go along with the compound setting that's apparently within a few minutes' drive of New York City.

The takeover's been pretty obvious from the beginning. »

The Following Season 2 - Episode 3 Review

Matt Smith reviews the third episode of The Following season 2...

Some say that behind every great man, is a great woman. With the obvious implications the following question hints at, what happens when the great women turns out to be not so great and in fact goes against everything you stand for?

That’s quite an extreme turn around, but that’s the way things go in this week’s The Following. Ryan Hardy and Joe Carroll have always had a parallel when it comes to their love lives. It used to be the character of Claire that would bind them, but now it’s the betrayal from those they thought were there for them.

Since the first week of seeing her in a hospital bed, the thought of Lily being a follower has been constantly appearing. Eschewing the obvious tension-filler of the ‘is she, isn’t she?’ question that constantly filled the mind, »
