Le Pacte has unveiled a trailer for Christos Massalas’ “Broadway,” which will unspool in the Big Screen competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam’s (IFFR) 51st edition.
Massalas’ feature debut, “Broadway” is supported by the Greek Film Center and the Sundance Institute. It was selected for the Sundance Screenwriters Lab and the Atelier Cinéfondation de Cannes in 2019.
The helmer’s previous shorts have been critically acclaimed, including “Copa-Loca” which played at Cannes’ Directors Fortnight in 2017. Born in Greece, Massalas was selected as one of the 15 emerging directors from around the world at the Locarno Film Festival in 2016.
Set in contemporary Athens, the movie revolves around Nelly, a young woman who rebels against her wealthy family and starts working at a strip club, where she meets Markos, a small-time gangster with charisma. Markos, who becomes her lover, brings her to Broadway, an abandoned complex squatted by a small community of...

A 30-something Greek-born filmmaker who has checkboxed major stops on the international film festival circuit with his short film output, Christos Massalas could have leaned towards the Euro film festival circuit (his short film Copa-Loca was a Directors’ Fortnight entry) in 2021 but something tells me his feature debut film might secure a Park City/Rotterdam spots instead. Set in Athens, production on Broadway took place in autumn of 2020 (it was set to shoot pre-pandemic) and saw Massalas re-team with lead actress Elsa Lekakou and his Dp Konstantinos Koukoulios (from Babis Makridis’ Pity fame – premiered in Sundance in 2018). Perhaps a modern wink to Bresson’s Pickpocket, Broadway was workshopped Sundance Screenwriters Lab in 2018 and Cannes Film Festival’s L’Atelier Cinéfondation.…...

Blue Monday Productions has boarded “Cora,” the feature directorial debut of visual artist and filmmaker Evi Kalogiropoulou, which was awarded at the Rotterdam Film Festival’s CineMart and the Cannes Cinefondation’s Atelier earlier this year.
“Cora” is the story of two working-class women fighting for freedom and their own identity against a dystopian patriarchal society. It follows the director’s short film, “Motorway 65,” which played in competition in Cannes last year.
Speaking to Variety at the Thessaloniki Film Festival, Kalogiropoulou said she drew inspiration for her feature debut during an artistic residency in the working-class town of Elefsina, where local women shared stories about the struggles they faced, especially as recent waves of immigration altered the social dynamic of the community. “For me the biggest question to explore is how it feels for a woman to be working and living in an area with so much contradiction and struggle,...

Principal photography on the Greek writer-director’s debut feature continued unabated during the pandemic. Greek writer-director Christos Massalas has directed a number of short films, adverts and music videos. His films have been screened and have won awards at various international film festivals. Among them are Woman with the Plastic Flower, and Flowers and Bottoms, and his latest effort was Copa-Loca, which premiered in the Cannes Directors' Fortnight and won multiple awards. Broadway is his debut feature and has just wrapped shooting. The film tells the story of a group of four young bandits in modern-day Athens. Nelly is a tomboy, while Barbara is a boy on the run, dressed as a girl, Rudolph is a prankster, and Mohammad is always there to save the day. They all collaborate by combining the art of dance with the art of pickpocketing. When Nelly and Barbara perform their dance routines to distract the.

Not long ago, it would have been difficult for Greek production outfit Heretic to board a project such as “Do Not Hesitate,” an ambitious, Afghanistan-set war drama that is partly being filmed on the island of Crete.
But for Giorgos Karnavas, who is producing “Hesitate” alongside the Netherlands’ Lemming Film, the calculus has changed since Greece introduced a 35% cash rebate last year. “The cash rebate gives us the [ability] to step into projects that we would not be able to otherwise, and is also a tool to attract new projects that appeal to us,” Karnavas says.
The rebate has given a fresh jolt to an industry still recovering from the country’s crippling economic crisis, with a wave of majority and minority co-productions in the cards from Greek producers. The 35% cash rebate on qualifying spend is available to feature films, documentaries, TV drama series, animated films and digital games, with a...

A band of young street performers and pickpockets in Athens find an unlikely refuge in an abandoned shopping mall. But when their former leader is released from prison, his return threatens the delicate balance of their makeshift family.
In “Broadway,” director Christos Massalas creates a colorful world of cast-offs and hustlers, set on the fringes of a city leveled by the Greek economic crisis. Produced by Neda Film and Bertrand Gore, of France’s Blue Monday Productions, and executive produced by Falliro House Productions, Massalas’ feature debut took part in Mia’s co-production market and pitching forum.
“Broadway” is set in a modern-day Athens that, while still bearing the scars of Greece’s decade-long freefall, brims with energy and possibility. “It’s looking at a world that is in transition,” said Massalas. The director said the film uses “the city and its modern monuments” to probe at “the remains of a consumerist society,...

The 49th annual edition of the Cannes Film Festival’s lauded Directors’ Fortnight section announced its picks this morning. The section is a non-competitive sidebar, but members of the Société des Réalisateurs Français, which organizes the event, do dole out honors.
Directors’ Fortnight artistic director Edouard Waintrop announced the titles in a roughly 40 minute presentation Thursday. The section opens with the latest film from Claire Denis, “Un Beau Soleil Interieur,” an adaptation of Roland Barthes’ “A Lover’s Discourse: Fragments,” which stars Juliette Binoche and Gerard Depardieu. Major auteurs in the lineup include Bruno Dumont, with his musical “Jeannette: The Childhood of Joan of Arc,” and Bael Ferrara, who will return to Cannes after several years with “Alive In France,” a documentary that follows Ferrara and his band as they tour France.
Other notable titles include “The Florida Project,” Sean Baker’s follow-up to “Tangerine,” and “A Ciambra,” from “Mediterranea” director Jonas Carpignano.
