Juliette Lewis Joins 'Nights of Cabiria' Remake Without Lee Daniels

8 May 2012 10:10 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Back in December of 2010, I was quite disgusted at the prospect of Precious director Lee Daniels taking on a remake of Federico Fellini's classic film Nights of Cabiria, the Italian 1957 film which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. Thankfully, since Daniels has been busy with The Paperboy, and soon The Butler, and there hasn't been any word on development of the proposed remake over the past year and a half. But THR says, a different remake of the classic film is apparently in the works, and it's in much worse hands than the Best Director nominated filmmaker, and Juliette Lewis is slated to star in the film. Read on! Titled The Days of Mary, the film will be contemporary re-imagining of the original film which followed Fellini's wife Giulietta Masina as a wide-eyed, naive prostitute walking the streets of Rome as she looks for true love, »

Juliette Lewis Starring In Remake of Federico Fellini’s Classic ‘Nights of Cabiria’

7 May 2012 2:34 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Yikes. We almost got away scot-free with no word for quite some time on Precious director Lee Daniels‘ planned remake of Federico Fellini‘s 1957 classic Nights of Cabiria. An update on the film is back to the frontburner, but from a different group of filmmakers.

Variety reports that Constellation Entertainment, the group behind Sabrina and Francis Ford Coppola‘s The Rainmaker, are now set to remake the film, and they have their star. Juliette Lewis will step into the shoes of Giulietta Masina‘s iconic character in the film titled The Days of Mary. She’ll be directed by producer Brad Michael Gilbert, who last worked on the Liam Neeson bomb After.Life and will be making his feature debut here.

If one switches out Rome for Reno, you still have the basic plot of the original, with a bright-eyed prostitue exploring the night life of the city. Gilbert stated, “he »

Wtf: Juliette Lewis To Star In 'Nights Of Cabiria' Remake 'The Days Of Mary'

7 May 2012 2:17 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

So, you might remember that a couple of years ago it was revealed that "Precious" director Lee Daniels was attached to direct a remake of Federico Fellini's classic "Nights Of Cabiria." Well, thankfully, that never came to pass, but guess what, this car crash of a bad idea is still happening.

Let's just run this down in the easiest way possible: instead of Giulietta Masina? We're going to get Juliette Lewis. Instead of Fellini? How about Brad Michael Gilbert, the producer behind "The Loss Of A Teardrop Diamond" and uh, "After.Life" that movie with Liam Neeson and Christina Ricci. Making his feature debut, no less. And instead of Nino Rota's masterful score? God knows, who they'll get to score this thing.

What else can we say about this? Oh, it's now going to be called "The Days Of Mary" which might be the most bland title to ever »

Attention NYC: Win The Rialto DVD Box Set & Tickets To 15th Anniversary Screenings At Film Society Of Lincoln Center

19 March 2012 1:23 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

While New Yorkers have plenty of opportunity to see classic films on the big screen, you'll be hard pressed to find a lineup as front to back awesome as the Film Society Of Lincoln Center's "15 For 15: Celebrating Rialto Pictures."

The series honors the reknowned arthouse distribution shingle founded in 1997 that has brought some of the best known (and previously unknown) classics of cinema to American audiences. And the selection here by programmers Scott Foundas, Eric Di Bernardo and Adrienne Halpern represents the breadth and scope of the films Rialto has put their stamp on, ranging from the French New Wave ("Breathless") to film noir ("Rififi") to comedy ("Billy Liar") and more. There is something here for everybody and with the series kicking off tonight, we've got a special prize for some lucky readers.

Greer Garson, Joan Crawford: Deceased Honorary Oscar-less

Walter Pidgeon, Greer Garson in William Wyler's Mrs. Miniver Honorary Oscars and Women Pt.2: Doris Day, Danielle Darrieux, Joan Fontaine, Maureen O'Hara On the list of film industry women who have yet to receive an Honorary Award, I did not include Olivia de Havilland, Elizabeth Taylor, Maggie Smith, Glenda Jackson, Luise Rainer, Jane Fonda, Meryl Streep, Sally Field, Jodie Foster, and Jessica Lange because each of them has already won two acting awards. Barbara Kopple, Thelma Schoonmaker, and Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, for their part, have each already won two Oscars for, respectively, documentary feature, film editing, and screenwriting. Barbra Streisand, I should note, has also won two Oscars; the second one, however, was as co-composer (with Paul Williams) of the song "Evergreen" from A Star Is Born. Only someone like Elia Kazan — i.e., with friends in high Academy places — can have two Academy Award wins in a »

Interview: Theresa Russell of Track 29

17 February 2012 3:13 PM, PST | Disc Dish | See recent Disc Dish news »

Disc Dish recently spoke with actress Theresa Russell on the eve of the release of Track 29, (DVD $14.98, Image Entertainment, available on Feb. 21, 2012), the 1988 comedy-drama in which she stars alongside Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Christopher Lloyd (Piranha) and Sandra Bernhard (Dinner Rush).

Written by Dennis Potter and directed by Ms. Russell’s then-husband Nicolas Roeg (The Man Who Fell To Earth), Track 29 is an eccentric fantasy-reality juggler if ever there was one. In it, she portrays Linda, a bored housewife who becomes captivated by the handsome young hitchhiker Martin (Oldman), who suddenly “drops” into her life. After Martin claims that he’s the child that she gave up for adoption after a teen pregnancy, Linda must deal with a series of increasingly bizarre events, which may or may not be transpiring solely in her own lonely head.

Not a great film but far from a forgettable one, »
