Interview: Tony Jopia talks ‘Cute Little Buggers’

With the upcoming worldwide release of the modern creature feature comedy Cute Little Buggers I was lucky enough to spend some time with the film’s director Tony Jopia to talk about his influences, bringing the bunnies to life and having fun on set.

How did first get in to filmmaking?

When I was 9 years old I was asked what I wanted to do at school. I remember seeing Airport 1975 (1974) and then not long after another film called the The Poseidon Adventure (1972). They both kind of set a firm seed in my mind that making moves is what I wanted to do. My father used to wake me up at midnight to watch all the creature feature movies that used to appear late at night. I had school the next day yet he would still wake me up at midnight and say, “Come and watch this”. It was the

‘Cute Little Buggers’ Review

Stars: Kristofer Dayne, Steve Aaron-Sipple, Dan Abrams, Lydie Misiek, John R. Walker, Caroline Munro, Honey Holmes, Gary Martin, Dani Thompson | Written by Garry Charles, Andy Davie, Tony Jopia, Kristofer Dayne | Directed by Tony Jopia

If Monty Pythons and the Holy Grail (1975) and Watership Down (1978) taught me anything growing up, if it doesn’t look like it isn’t dressed up to attend the Playboy Mansion, rampant rabbits are dangerous. Tony Jopia takes that premise one step further with his B-Movie creature feature Cute Little Buggers.

When hostile aliens land on earth with the intension of taking over the planet to save their own race, they choose to mutate the local rabbit population. Blending the rabbits with alien DNA, they knowingly unleashed the cute but vicious blood thirsty creatures on the unsuspecting locals. As the butchered bodies starts piling and the rampant rabbits begin to rampage, the locals are forced to

Movie Review – Cute Little Buggers (2017)

  • Flickeringmyth
Cute Little Buggers, 2017.

Directed by Tony Jopia.

Starring Caroline Munro, Honey Holmes, Gary Martin, and Dani Thompson.

Synopsis:

A quaint English festival is rudely interrupted by curious outsiders, criminals, tourists and bloody terror from beyond the stars, as aliens seeking to repopulate their dying race unleash a terrifying and monstrous creature upon the locals – the rabbit.

Those expecting an introspective film examining the complexities of life in rural England since the Brexit vote, or hoping for a deep complex drama about the troubled relationship between a son and his estranged father, might want to look elsewhere. Cute Little Buggers is exactly the kind of film you think it is. An unpretentious, gloriously silly and cheesy love letter to the B-movies of the past. It just isn’t a very good one.

Let’s get my verdict of the film out of the way early shall we? This film is bad.

The Motion Picture & Television Fund rededicated its newly renovated Wasserman Campus movie theater in Woodland Hills on Saturday, May 20.

The Louis B. Mayer Theatre, named after the decades-long head of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, first opened in 1967 and was designed for residents to screen first-run films. The complex got a remodeled screening room and expanded outdoor event plaza as the theater celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

The Susan and Gary Martin Screening Room and the Michael V. Lewis Plaza were constructed on Mptf’s campus through donations from longtime Mptf supporters and donors Susan and Gary Martin and RealD founder and CEO Michael Lewis.

Movie Review: Crying Wolf

“Don’t go into the graveyard”

An ominous warning from the opening scene of Crying Wolf

Crying Wolf is the latest Horror-Comedy from UK director Tony Jopia (Deadtime, 2012). The story is told from the perspective of a character known only as “Private Detective” (played by Gary Martin who is best known in film for his work getting murdered by a tractor in 1986’s Slaughter High). The first thing that gets me is that Martin, a long-time voice over actor who you can hear in films like Neverending Story, Corpse Bride and Fern Gully (to say nothing of his collaborations with rock icons, Queen), appears to have dubbed his own dialog in Crying Wolf in an overly dramatic coffee commercial way. Something I immediately chalked up to an intentional touch of comedic irony. Because, why not. After Martin nearly comes to blows with a shopkeeper over his desire to purchase a book titled Crying Wolf,

Exclusive! Blood-Soaked First Stills From Gory Comic-Horror ‘Cute Little Buggers’

A few weeks ago we showcased the first teaser poster and official plot synopsis from forthcoming British comedy creature-feature, Cute Little Buggers 3D. Now we have the first gruesome set of stills from the fun genre effort directed by Tony Jopia, which is said to be a throwback to the cult classic 1980 splatter flicks like Critters, Ghoulies and of course, Joe Dante’s Gremlins. With the recent success of retro-like efforts Feast, Attack The Block and Grabbers, we think it’s just the right time for another B-movie monster invasion.

Will it keep the very English moniker for its Stateside release? Who knows, but we suggest Ferocious Furry F**Ckers may translate well! Speaking of which, we’re still desperate to see these flesh eating creatures who are purposely being kept hidden. A good move to build suspense we think.

From the director of ‘Deadtime’ and ‘Crying Wolf’ comes Cute Little Buggers!
