Review: In 'Song From the Forest,' Louis Sarno Joins a Pygmy Tribe, Starts a Family and Returns to New York

The saga of Louis Sarno has never been a secret. In the 1980s, American writer and musicologist visited the remote Bayaka Pygmy clan in the Central African Republic to record their unique music; with time, he settled among them, married a member of the tribe and started a family. In 1993, he published a memoir of his experiences, followed by an album collecting the Bayaka's earthy acoustic melodies in 1996; in 2010, Lavina Currier's feature-length "Oka!" fictionalized Sarno's journey with Kris Marshall cast as an embellished version of Sarno. But the true record of his unique tale finally comes together in "Song From the Forest," documentarian Michael Obert's perceptive and utterly gorgeous look at Sarno's life today and his experience returning to his old haunts in New York. Through an elegant juxtaposition of jungle and city life, "Song From the Forest" (which takes its name from Sarno's book) not only shows what »

Death in Paradise review: the TV equivalent of a boring holiday timeshare

Series four of the Caribbean-set comedy drama bowed out with the usual bumbling Englishness, things being knocked over and comedy lizards

It’s rare there isn’t something new starting off, or something interesting and original happening, on television. But last night was one of those barren nights. So here’s something not very interesting or original coming to an end, the final episode of the current (fourth) series of Death in Paradise (BBC1).

It has been a while since I dropped into the Caribbean Island of Saint Marie, and I’m sad to see that DS Camille Bordey (Sara Martins) is no longer around. But a big bonjour to DS Florence Cassell (Josephine Jobert), whose role seems to be the same – to be beautiful and chic and neat and French in order to make Di Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) look even more shambolic and bumblingly British. And, along with the pretty scenery, »

Death in Paradise's Will Mellor: 'I want to do action role like Taken'

12 January 2015 6:50 AM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

Will Mellor has revealed that he hopes to surprise fans with his new role on Death in Paradise.

The Broadchurch actor plays doctor Karl Slater in this week's instalment of the BBC One series, a part he described as a "challenge".

"It was different for me - I don't play doctors very often," Mellor told Digital Spy. "I'm a working-class lad, so I play a lot of cheeky chappies.

"But I've been doing a lot more drama recently with Broadchurch and Dates, and I did In the Club on BBC One this year... so I'm hopefully going to do a lot more drama and challenge myself with different parts."

Mellor admitted that his dream acting part would see him take on an action hero role, in a project similar to Liam Neeson's Taken film franchise.

"I want to play a hero - I want to save peoples' lives," he said. »

Death in Paradise star Kris Marshall Q&A: 'It's been my hardest job'

5 January 2015 1:00 AM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

Death in Paradise returns for its fourth series later this week on BBC One, to help bring us all some much-needed sunshine in gloomy January.

Kris Marshall succeeded in taking over Ben Miller in the show's leading role last year, with the third series climbing to even bigger ratings than ever before.

Digital Spy sat down with the former My Family actor about the show's continued success and what to look forward to in series four.

You must be pleased that Death in Paradise continues to be really popular?

"Yeah, more so even. I was absolutely humbled by how brilliantly it went. I couldn't have wished for it to go better. The last thing I wanted to do was take an 8 million viewer show and turn it into a 4m viewer show. That wouldn't have looked particularly good on my CV. I was really happy.
