May the 4th is upon us once again, which means it’s time for us to wish our awesome fans a Happy Star Wars Day! Even though Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope was released on May 25th, 1977, due to the clever (force/fourth) pun, May the 4th has become known among fans as Star Wars Day. With that being said, May the Fourth be with you… always.

Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope was released on May 25th, 1977 and stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Peter Cushing, Alec Guinness, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker and Peter Mayhew. The film was directed by George Lucas.

Gary Ross/Catching Fire Split

10 April 2012 11:37 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Gary Ross, The Hunger Games Gary Ross will not be directing The Hunger Games' sequel, Catching Fire. It was initially reported that Ross was out of the picture because he wanted to focus on his own projects. A day later, Deadline reported that negotiations were still ongoing, and that Ross had invested quite a bit of effort into Catching Fire to merely drop out like that. Well, it has happened. Ross' official reason for quitting the production, as published at Deadline.com earlier this evening, is as follows: Despite recent speculation in the media, and after difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct Catching Fire. As a writer and a director, I simply don't have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule. He then proceeds to praise Lionsgate and »

Exclusive: J.W. Rinzler on 'The Making Of Return Of The Jedi' and more

In the latest of the Shadowlocked Podcasts, we chat with George Lucas's official Star Wars chronicler, writer Jonathan Rinzler, who joined Lucasfilm's book division in 2001 and persuaded his way into re-envisioning the Star Wars 'Making Of' books as full-fledged production sagas - operatic stories in their own right, as seen in the likes of 'The Making Of Star Wars' (2007) and 'The Making Of The Empire Strikes Back' (2010).

Site editors Gabriel Ruzin and Martin Anderson chat with Jonathan about 'the best classified ad in the world'; the joys and travails of having unimpeded access to the Lucasfilm archives; which characters were(and weren't) nearly killed at the story stage of Return Of The Jedi; emerging and forthcoming books such as Darth Vader and Son...

...and then after taking a short break on (let's face it) an inevitable topic. »

The bad luck that made Empire Strikes Back the best Star Wars sequel..?

1 March 2012 2:06 PM, PST | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

In the first of Shadowlocked's new Podcast feed, I chat with one of the site's most outspoken and opinionated writers about his love/hate relationship with the Star Wars franchise and his (pretty much hate/hate) relationship with creator George Lucas. Admitting to the label of 'optimistic masochist', Aaron Knier's frustration with the prequels is only matched by his inability to leave any of the Star Wars main franchise movies behind. For some reason, for Star Wars fans/semi-fans/haters it's not like trying tuna and deciding that since you don't like it, you simply won't order it again. And perhaps the brilliance of 1980's The Empire Strikes Back is that reason...

Possibly the most interesting part of my chat with Aaron is the discussion (from roughly 12 minutes in) as to the strange events that conspired to make 1978's hottest Hollywood property unable to direct the sequel to Star Wars, »

An Obsessive Chat About Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace Between Mike Ryan and IFC's Matt Singer

8 February 2012 8:38 AM, PST | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace returns to theaters on Friday in 3D -- 13 years after its original release. In 1999, anticipation was high for what was the first new Star Wars installment in 16 years -- a film that would introduce us to young Anakin Skywalker, who was prophesized to bring balance to The Force. Today, The Phantom Menace serves as a reminder not of the balance of The Force but of the balance between expectations and reality. Such a reminder that (back by popular demand) IFC's Matt Singer and myself decided that an obsessive chat was necessary. Mike: So, Matt, where do you stand on The Phantom Menace?

Matt: I guess I'm of two minds about it: On the one hand, I think it's a terrible movie, and on the other hand I kind of love that it exists specifically because it's a terrible movie.

Mike: That sounds »

Star Wars Light Saber Master Bob Anderson Passes Away at 89

2 January 2012 11:31 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Bob Anderson, Olympic fencer and movie sword master who donned Darth Vader's helmet for all of the light saber fight scenes in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi, has passed away at the age of 89. Cause of death was not disclosed to the public.

Bob Anderson worked as a sword master, fight director, and stunt performer for over five decades in cinema, appearing alongside Errol Flynn, Antonio Banderas, and Mark Hamill.

It was Mark Hamill who outted Bob Anderson as the third piece of the Darth Vader persona in 1983. The actor was joined by James Earl Jones as the voice and David Prowse as the body in creating one of the greatest villains of all time.

According to Bob Anderson's former assistant Leon Hill, David Prowse wasn't good with a sword, and he was unable to »
