Blu-ray Review: Chopping Mall

26 September 2016 6:17 PM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

We horror fans have been spoiled in recent years when it comes to home video titles, with labels like Scream Factory, Arrow, Synapse, Vinegar Syndrome, Blue Underground and several others releasing genre titles both classic and obscure on pristine high definition Blu-rays, often laden with tons of extra content for too much of a good thing. Now Lionsgate is throwing its hat into the special edition Blu-ray market with Chopping Mall, the first title in their new Vestron Video Collector’s Series. They couldn’t have picked a better title to kick off what is, based on the quality work here, a very promising new label.

Schlock legend Jim Wynorski’s 1986 opus Chopping Mall—aka R.O.B.O.T.S., aka Killbots—is pure B-movie bliss. It takes a group of teenagers (among them genre legends Barbara Crampton and Kelli Maroney, plus Tony O’Dell from Head of the Class »

Class of 1986: Six Horror & Sci-Fi Movies Released in 1986 That Deserve More Love

10 July 2016 3:27 PM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

When it comes to horror and sci-fi movies from 1986, there are several milestone titles that always come to mind first: Aliens, The Fly, Blue Velvet, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, Manhunter, Poltergeist II: The Other Side, or even Psycho III, just to name a few. But like any great year of cinema, there are always a few underrated gems that get overshadowed along the way and should receive a little extra love. Here are six films from 1986 that I think deserve to be on every genre fan’s radar:

F/X: A movie about a special effects artist who gets mixed up in a government conspiracy, at a time when practical effects were in their heyday? Yes, please. F/X isn’t a film I hear a ton of folks talk about, but it has been on cable a lot lately, which means I’ve spent a few nights revisiting it, »

Stars: Daniel Hirsch, Kelli Maroney, Nicole Rio, Tom Shell, Jared Moses, Crystal Carson, Joe Estevez, John Michaels | Written by Robert Gilliam, Nico Mastorakis, Fred Perry | Directed by Nico Mastorakis

You could say that the 80s are the decade that just keeps on giving, especially when it comes to cult movies. There are some that may pass by your radar though, and you miss out on their glory. This is the case of The Zero Boys for me, and lucky Arrow Video’s new Blu-ray has allowed me to fix this.

A group of survival game players, The Zero Boys decide to take a trip to the woods to let off some steam. With new friend Jamie (Kelli Maroney) tagging along everything seems to be going okay. When they discover a cabin in the woods though and decide to shack up there it doesn’t take long before they realise they »

Exclusive: Danger Lurks In Clip From Arrow Video's Restored ‘80s Cult Thriller ‘The Zero Boys’

25 April 2016 8:03 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

While Hans Zimmer is better known these days for his relationship with directors like Christopher Nolan, it was Nico Mastorakis who helped first get his foot in the door of the industry. One of Zimmer’s earliest credits was on Mastorakis’ slice of ‘80s horror nastiness “The Zero Boys” (he would also score the director's next effort, "Terminal Exposure") and the film has now been given a fresh 2K restoration by Arrow Video for its upcoming Blu-ray release. Kelli Maroney leads the movie that follows a group of friends who head to the woods for a weekend of survival games, only to wind up fighting for their actual lives against a group of inbred, bloodthirsty maniacs. Featuring some gruesome scenes that would lay the path for pictures like “Hostel” and “Saw,” this one is a must for horror buffs. Check out our exclusive clip from the movie below which teases »
