Cary Fukunaga interview: Jane Eyre, Michael Fassbender, Judi Dench’s shadow puppetry, and more

9 March 2012 5:02 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

We chat to director Cary Fukunaga about adapting a 150 year old story, casting Michael Fassbender, and his upcoming projects…

Cary Fukunaga’s bleakly beautiful Jane Eyre sits comfortably amongst the best cinematic adaptations of Charlotte Brontë’s novel, and features an outstanding lead performance from Mia Wasikowska. Only its director’s second feature (the first being 2009 Spanish-language immigration drama Sin Nombre), Jane Eyre is now out on DVD in the UK.

We spoke to the film’s young director Cary Fukunaga, about how he avoided making a “cheeseball” glossy period drama, Michael Fassbender’s teeth, his upcoming sci-fi and Us Civil War projects, and why he wants to fit a horse with rubber shoes…

This interview contains potential spoilers for Jane Eyre.

You had to cut a lot from the story so you could make the film, can you please make my day by telling me that there’s going »

Review: 'Salmon Fishing In The Yemen' Is All Heart and No Brain

8 March 2012 2:59 PM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Picking on "Salmon Fishing In The Yemen" makes us feel like a bit of a bully, as though we're mercilessly teasing that super nice but incredibly dumb girl in class. It's an affable, inoffensive British comedy that just wants you to like it so much that you can't help but snicker behind its back. Or are we the only ones who are that cruel?

Based on Paul Torday's novel, "Salmon Fishing In The Yemen" follows the efforts of a team to bring a salmon run to the Middle Eastern country at the request of an ambitious sheikh/amateur fisherman (Amr Waked, "Syriana"). The sheikh's representative Harriet (Emily Blunt) approaches fisheries expert Dr. Fred Jones (Ewan McGregor), who initially scoffs at the idea, then is reluctantly tasked with the enormous, multi-million dollar project. Meanwhile, the British prime minister is tired of all the bad press coming out of the area, »

'Sherlock Holmes' Star Paul Anderson Joins Brian De Palma's 'Passion'; Composer Pino Dinaggio Reunites With Helmer

6 March 2012 9:24 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

There's Paul W.S. Anderson of 'Resident Evil' fame, and there's renowned helmer Paul Thomas Anderson. But we'll now have to throw in another Paul Anderson to the mix -- this time without a middle name or initials. The little-known actor is probably best recognized as Colonel Sebastien Moran in "Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows" and has set up a reunion with his leading ladies on that film, Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace, booking a role on Brian De Palma's "Passion."

A loose remake of Alain Corneau's "Love Crime," the film also features Dominic Cooper and Karoline Herfurth, and sees De Palma exploring everyone's professional fantasy as it follows a woman who turns to murder when a boss steals her idea. De Palma previously noted that the movie will provide him the opportunity to "combine eroticism, suspense, mystery and murder into one spellbinding cinematic experience."

25 Shockers from the 2012 Oscar Nominations

24 January 2012 8:06 AM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

It's Academy Award Nominations Day, which means for every sure-thing nominee to applaud (go George Clooney!) or fan fave who squeaks in (woo hoo Melissa McCarthy!), there's a snub to bemoan (where's Albert Brooks?) or a huge surprise to marvel at (who's Demian Bichir?), and this year's list of Oscar hopefuls contains several shockers.

Before we start a month of predictions and odds-making, let's take a moment to point out the many ways the Academy missed the mark or pleasantly surprised us with their picks.

Hugonian Domination

We hope Martin Scorsese thanks his wife this morning for demanding he make a movie their 12-year-old daughter could actually see. The Oscar winner's adaptation of a beloved children's book just scored an impressive 11 nominations in basically everything except the performance categories (most notable snubbing: Sir Ben Kingsley). Although it's highly the movie will sweep "Return of the King"-style, it's still a »

Final, Pre-Nominations, 2012 Oscar Predictions

23 January 2012 10:59 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

It's that time, I just finished watching the last film from 2011 I had time to watch before offering up my final 2012 Oscar predictions and I'm glad I did as it is now among my nominees whereas before it wasn't. Tomorrow the 2012 Oscar nominations will be announced and many questions will be answered while new ones will sprout up. Most categories have their clear front-runners, but down near the bottom of each list the potential nominees became a bit hazy not to mention the technical categories where damn near anything can happen. For Best Picture I batted around several possibilities after I got beyond the six films I feel are absolute locks and the idea of just how many films will the Academy end up nominating? This year there can be anywhere from five to ten nominees for Best Picture and we won't know how many there are until tomorrow's announcement. »

Dario Marianelli Hired for Brian De Palma’s ‘Passion’; Jonsi Scoring Cameron Crowe’s Next

10 January 2012 10:12 AM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Unless it’s someone I consider myself a big fan of — particularly an “everyday” musician — news of a composer hiring isn’t the kind of development to get me going. This is different. FilmMusicReporter tells us that Atonement composer Dario Marianelli has been picked by Brian De Palma to score his new film, Passion, which is set to begin shooting in Berlin this March — hopefully, with Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace in tow.

But it isn’t the hiring of Marianelli that makes me so happy; it’s just knowing that De Palma will finally get another picture before cameras in two months’ time. Still, I liked the composer’s work on Atonement — his Oscar was a well-deserved victory — and it’d certainly be a pleasure to have another great score in one of the director’s thrillers. Another great film would be rewarding, too.

Dario Marianelli To Score Brian De Palma's 'Passion'

9 January 2012 4:39 PM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Brian De Palma, whether you love him or hate him, always has a knack for choosing composers. Whether it's the twinkly, sexy romanticism of Pino Donaggio in "Blow Out," "Body Double," and "Dressed to Kill;" the brooding eroticism of Bernard Herrmann in "Sisters" and "Obsession;" or the more off-kilter experimentalism of Ryuichi Sakamoto in "Snake Eyes" and "Femme Fatale;" De Palma knows how to match the musician with the material, almost seamlessly. Even his big budget Hollywood job, "Mission: Impossible," which had a last minute replacement score cooked up by Danny Elfman, remains one of that composer's greatest, least heralded efforts. And that knack seems to have continued, with Film Music Reporter noting that the filmmaker has brought on Dario Marianelli, of "Atonement" and "Jane Eyre" fame, for his latest project, an erotic thriller called "Passion."
