Director Josh Trank discusses The Fantastic Four reboot, Michael B. Jordan’s casting as Johnny Storm and paying homage to the comic books

26 February 2015 12:58 PM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

This morning we brought you four new images from 20th Century Fox’s upcoming reboot The Fantastic Four [check them out here], and now Cbm has posted some quotes from director Josh Trank in the latest issue of Empire Magazine, where he offers up his thoughts on the difference between the new film and the studio’s first two Ff movies.

“The original two films to me are very similar to a lot of recent movies that have come out, in terms of that kind of cartoonish. It’s just not something that me and Simon are interested in as storytellers. There’s the opportunity to make something that is challenging and tragic and dramatic. The opportunity is right there in the material. We’d rather steer it in that direction as opposed to just embracing a tone that comes right off the page.”

Cohen and Brendan O'Brien. Cohen is set to direct; the writing duo penned last year's rowdy comedy hit Neighbors. 'Fantastic Four' Director Talks Thing and Human Torch

26 February 2015 8:49 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

After the first trailer's release last month, it became immediately clear that the Fantastic Four reboot was going to be much different than the first two films, especially since this new version is inspired by the early works of David Cronenberg, such as Scanners and The Fly. During a new interview with Empire, director Josh Trank say he wanted to stay away from the tone of the first two Fantastic Four movies, which he thought were too "cartoonish," adding that he is steering this reboot in a darker direction, as opposed to the comic books.

"The original two films to me are very similar to a lot of recent movies that have come out, in terms of that kind of cartoonish. It's just not something that me and Simon (Kinberg) are interested in as storytellers. There's the opportunity to make something that is challenging and tragic and dramatic. The opportunity »

New 'Fantastic Four Images,' Film Described as 'Dark Amblin Movie'

26 February 2015 7:39 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Last month the teaser trailer for Fantastic Four came out of nowhere, finally showing off what we can expect from Josh Trank's comic book reboot. The teaser was pretty heavy-handed, going for a tone akin to Interstellar, so we're wondering just what we'll see in the next trailer. In the meantime, Empire has released four new images from the film, each giving us a new look at Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Bell and Kate Mara in the film. There's nothing too revealing here, but at his point, we'll take what we can get. The film doesn't hit until later this summer, so we've probably got time to wait for more footage. Look! Here's the new images from Josh Trank's Fantastic Four from Empire: You can still watch the first trailer for Fantastic Four right here. The magazine also had an intriguing description about the film from Trank himself, »

Four New "Fantastic Four" Reboot Photos

26 February 2015 5:43 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

A couple of new photos from Josh Trank's "Fantastic Four" have gone online, each one featuring one of the film's main stars Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell. The shots come from Empire magazine who also spoke with Trank and writer/producer Simon Kinberg about the upcoming and decidedly more science-fiction oriented take on the material.

Trank labels it a distinctly less cartoonish approach and a "dark Amblin" movie with Kinberg adding: "there was an Amblin-style approach to the characterisation, and to contextualising everything in a real world."

Trank also says: "The original two films to me are very similar to a lot of recent movies that have come out, in terms of that kind of cartoonish. It's just not something that me and Simon (Kinberg) are interested in as storytellers. There's the opportunity to make something that is challenging and tragic and dramatic. The »

Marvel At New Fantastic 4 Stills

26 February 2015 4:26 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Empire

In anticipation for Josh Trank’s clean slate of the Fantastic Four (and the nay-sayers that are keen to stain it), four brand new stills from the film have popped up over at Empire, which will be appearing in their next issue. Unfortunately, the images are following the same guidelines as the teaser trailer from last month, giving away naff all other than that Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell will most certainly be appearing in it. Oh, and a bike. Did not know there was going to be a bike in the film. See, there’s news for you.

Pulling its story from the pages of Marvel’s Ultimate take on the Fantastic Four, Trank’s film will tread over a different origin of how Reed Richards and co. were bestowed their nifty gifts that are used to full effect to stop a deadly foe. »

New Fantastic Four Stills Show Off Costumes And Tim Blake Nelson

A new batch of stills from Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot have found their way online today, giving us our first real look at several of the film’s costumes, individual shots of the titular heroes, and Tim Blake Nelson before he makes his transition into the villainous Mole Man.

There’s not much to take away from these images that wasn’t already gleaned from the first trailer, but honestly, it’s just nice to see that 20th Century Fox has stopped shrouding Fantastic Four in a cloak of frustrating secrecy. With awards season now over and the summer blockbuster season just around the corner, this is probably just the first of many new glimpses at what Trank and company have in store for Marvel’s titular super family.

Honestly, I do like what we’ve seen from the film so far. This will »

Exclusive: Four New Fantastic Four Stills Arrive

25 February 2015 4:02 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Chronicle director Josh Trank has made a Fantastic Four movie - but not one like the Chris Evans 'n' Jessica Alba version you may remember. This one has Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell in it, for starters, and what's more, it's distinctly less "cartoonish", to quote the director himself. For proof, here are some stills from the upcoming film, straight from the new issue of Empire, on shelves today.A key difference in this superhero reboot lies in the origins of the characters' powers. In the original Stan Lee/Jack Kirby iteration of the Fantastic Four, the team gains their powers by travelling into space, where they’re bombarded with DNA-altering cosmic rays. But Trank’s film draws more heavily on the Ultimate Fantastic Four, which abandoned space flight in favour of inter-dimensional travel.Speaking to Empire for the new issue, Trank explains that the »

Empire has posted four new pictures from Josh Trank's upcoming The Fantastic Four reboot offering new looks at the film's four leads, which means new pictures of Michael B. Discussing the upcoming movie, set for an August 7 release, we learn the key difference between this film and the previous releases as well as Stan Lee/Jack Kirby's iteration, this version will draw from the "Ultimate Fantastic Four", which abandoned the idea of the heroes gaining their powers from cosmic rays during space flight in favor of inter-dimensional travel. Trank referred to the picture as a "dark Amblin movie", referring to the early days of Steven Spielberg's films, with writer/producer Simon Kinberg adding, "There was an Amblin-style approach to the characterization, and to contextualizing everything in a real world".
