A Sequel To 'Ironclad' Is In The Works For Some Reason

15 May 2012 9:25 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Did anyone catch the medieval action picture “Ironclad?” We said it was “made of flimsy fabric,” but with a cast consisting of Paul Giamatti, James Purefoy, Brian Cox, Derek Jacobi, Kate Mara, Jason Flemyng, Jamie Foreman and Aneurin Barnard on board, how could it be all bad? Well apparently the production of helmer Jonathan English’s film was steeped in difficulties and lost talent like Bob Hoskins, Robert Carlyle, Pete Postlethwaite, Richard Attenborough, William Moseley, Colm Meaney and Angus McFayden along the way.

All that doesn’t matter much now that Variety is reporting that a sequel is in the works, entitled “Ironclad: Battle For Blood.” If that doesn’t already sound like the title of a late-career Jean Claude Van Damme film to you, than perhaps you’re a fan who may find solace in knowing that English and co-writer Steven McDool will pen the sequel, with Content »

Tribeca 2012 Review: Deadfall

10 May 2012 3:56 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Deadfall is bound to get comparisons to Fargo. With a few minor script tweaks and slightly different accents, this could have been passed off as a direct to DVD sequel. It is not that there are any similar characters or storylines but more so in the look and feel of the film. Had this been Fargo 2, I.d call it a worthy successor although I.m sure others will want my head on a platter (or my body in a woodchipper) for saying that. Prior to seeing the film, I heard some strongly negative feedback and was even told to avoid it completely by someone who attended an earlier press screening. Since then I.ve noticed a slew of negative reviews calling it an absolute mess and much worse. Honestly, I don.t know why everyone is ranking on this film so much because I loved the hell out of it. »

Ryan Murphy & His Leading Ladies Recreate Scenes From 'Repulsion,' 'Carrie,' 'The Birds' & Other Horror Classics

9 May 2012 7:24 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Magazines doing photo spreads recreating scenes from iconic movies is nothing new. Vanity Fair seems to do it a couple times a year, and it was at the tail end of 2011 when the New York Times Magazine got in on the act enlisting a wealth of stars for a big awards season shoot that included, among others, Rooney Mara dressing up as Alex from "A Clockwork Orange." Now, "Glee" and "American Horror Story" creator Ryan Murphy is joining in, recruiting the leading ladies from his TV projects to participate in a horror-themed shoot for Elle.

And the results? Well, it's not bad. Kate Mara easily makes the grade, standing in for Sissy Spacek in "Carrie" and making the case that she might be a good choice for the remake if Chloe Moretz were to suddenly drop out. Jayma Mays isn't too shabby as Tippi Hedren in the nicely replicated scene from "The Birds, »

Jamie Bell and Kate Mara are set to lead this rom-com that will be directed by Charlie McDowell who will make his feature directorial debut with this project. Justin Lader [...]

Jamie Bell & Kate Mara Team Up For Rom-Com 'Fighting Jacob'

27 April 2012 2:47 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Earlier today, The Playlist team ran down their favorite rom-coms and if there was any unifying thread to the variety of movies we had listed, it was that chemistry and appeal between the two leads is essential. If you don't have stars that can be charming, attractive, funny and sympathetic, no matter how good the script is, it just won't work. But luckily for the makers of "Fighting Jacob," they're off to a good start.

Jamie Bell ("The Adventures of Tintin," "Jane Eyre") and Kate Mara ("127 Hours," "Happythankyoumoreplease") are set to lead the feature film directorial debut by Charlie McDowell. Penned by Justin Lader, this one boasts a high concept, which is not usual for these kinds of films. Bell will play the titular Jacob 'The Manic Maniac' Rosenthal, a rising boxer whose success is hampered by his Ocd. When his girlfriend (Mara) breaks up with him, Jacob is forced »

Jamie Bell Goes Back to Live-Action for Romantic Comedy ‘Fighting Jacob’; Kate Mara Co-Starring

27 April 2012 1:24 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

If you’re going to make a romantic comedy based around someone with obsessive compulsive disorder… well, I guess you can use just about anything as your launch point. As it goes, Variety reports that Jamie Bell (The Adventures of Tintin) will lead Charlie (son of Malcolm) McDowell‘s Fighting Jacob, while Kate Mara (127 Hours) has also been signed as the female lead. (Not to get gossip-y here, but it doesn’t hurt the director is dating her sister.)

The film, written by Justin Lader, follows Jacob ‘The Manic Maniac’ Rosenthal, a young boxer who uses the peculiar aspects of his own Ocd to scientifically win fights and advance his career. But this is brought to a screeching halt when his girlfriend (Mara) breaks up with him, leaving the fighter no other option but to “evaluate his many neuroses and whether or not he can be truly happy and a »

Tribeca Dialogue: Stefan Ruzowitzky and Eric Bana Discuss the Icy Temperatures and Characters of ‘Deadfall’

26 April 2012 3:25 PM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

Who likes standing outside in the snow and freezing cold for hours on end? No one, but having material like Zach Dean’s screenplay for Deadfall and collaborators like director Stefan Ruzowitzky, Eric Bana, Olivia Wilde, Charlie Hunnam, Sissy Spacek, Kris Kristofferson and Kate Mara certainly helps. Bana and Wilde lead as Addison and Liza, siblings who just pulled off a casino heist. However, while making off with their loot, they get into a car crash leaving them no choice, but to escape on foot. They split up, Addison heading into the woods and Liza taking the road where she hitches a ride with Jay (Hunnam). While she’s all comfy cozy at a local bar and motel, Addison is out battling subzero temperatures and the local cops for his freedom and life. As Deadfall just...

Tribeca Film Festival: Eric Bana goes dark for 'Deadfall'

25 April 2012 4:04 AM, PDT | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

Sunday night, despite some pretty dismal rain in New York City, the stars of the new film, Deadfall, braved the elements to pose prettily on the red carpet.

But a few hours earlier Deadfall lead Eric Bana spoke to EW from the much drier (and more casual) quarters of the Chelsea Hotel about the new film, directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky (The Counterfeiters) and co-starring Olivia Wilde, Charlie Hunnam, Kate Mara, Sissy Spacek, and Kris Kristofferson.

Bana plays a smooth-talking thief who, along with his sister (Wilde), is involved in a casino robbery gone wrong which forces them to flee into »

Tribeca 2012: ‘Deadfall’ exploits an ace cast and director to liven up a weak script

23 April 2012 6:39 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Deadfall

Directed by Stefan Ruzowitsky

Written by Zach Dean

USA, 2012

After winning the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2008 with The Counterfeiters, director Stefan Ruziowitsky’s first American effort is the noir-ish thriller Deadfall. Although it seems that his script could have used at least one more revision, Ruzowitsky’s Oscar-winning pedigree attracted skilled actors and coaxed good work out of them, thus elevating the material.

To illustrate: there’s a scene in which brutal thief Addison (Eric Bana) escapes a band of police thanks to superlative snowmobile riding, then we cut to the very next scene where his con-woman sister Liza (Olivia Wilde) tells her boyfriend/mark Jay (Charlie Hunnam from Sons of Anarchy) that she doesn’t build snowmen very often because “there’s not a lot of snow in Alabama.” Zach Dean’s script is all over the place, scattering a number of good scenes »

Prepare To Go Insane Over ‘American Horror Story’ Season 2 – One Theory On What To Expect

19 April 2012 5:50 PM, PDT | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

The clouds swirling around the second season of FX’s American Horror Story are starting to clear up, allowing fans to look into the crystal ball. Before Season 1 ended, co-creator Ryan Murphy hinted that the new season would bring back Jessica Lange to star. Lange would go on to win a Golden Globe for her performance as the politically incorrect nosy neighbor Constance. Murphy also dropped seeds that the setting would relocate to the East Coast, a place hinted at in the Season 1′s penultimate episode, “Birth.” Murphy spoke Wednesday at a panel in North Hollywood at the TV Academy, promoting Ahs and revealed more concrete details.

The Second Season “is set on the East Coast at an institution for the criminally insane that is run by Jessica,” Murphy said. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the table conversation in “Birth” shared by Constance, her medium friend, Billie Dean and Violet »

Women Set To Dominate Tribeca Film Festival

17 April 2012 6:00 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

New York -- If there's a keynote performance at the 11th annual Tribeca Film Festival, it may well be Abbie Cornish's riveting portrayal of a Texas single mother who, desperate for money to regain custody of her son, haphazardly smuggles Mexican immigrants across the border.

Such leading roles don't frequently come around for women, but this year's Tribeca boasts a boatload of them. In David Riker's "The Girl," which will make its world premiere in competition at the festival, Cornish's fraught, sweaty performance of a mother on the brink bears two more pervasive themes at the 2012 Tribeca: financial straits and overlapping worlds.

"It totally rebirthed me as an actor," says Cornish, the Aussie actress of "Bright Star" and "Limitless." "It felt like it was the first time again. In making the film, I felt like it was the best I had ever been as an actor in all regards – as an actor, »

The Playlist's 15 Most Anticipated Films Of The 2012 Tribeca Film Festival

16 April 2012 7:02 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

This year's Tribeca Film Festival carries one of its strongest line-ups in years. In addition to films from Cannes, Venice, Toronto, Sundance and Berlin circuit, there's also a wealth of U.S. premieres or lesser-known festival movies in the line-up that look just as promising this time around; after a relatively weak SXSW, it looks like the East Coast is getting some of the good stuff.

Below, you'll find 15 films that seem among the most intriguing Tribeca has to offer this year. Of course, we can't speak for their quality as yet, but they certainly look promising at this point at time. And for the record, we haven't included the high-profile opening and closing films -- "The Five-Year Engagement" and "The Avengers" -- partly because they're getting more than enough attention elsewhere, and partly because we've already seen both (although can't review them just yet -- keep your eyes peeled »

Goodwin Designs High Heels For Charity

8 April 2012 6:26 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actress Ginnifer Goodwin has shown off her flair for fashion by designing a pair of high heels for charity.

The Big Love star has created the Ginnifer shoe, a pair of five-inch (12.7-centimetre) pumps in bright orange leather, to be sold on the Milk and Honey shopping website.

A portion of profits from every pair sold will benefit the celebrity designer's choice - and Goodwin is handing her proceeds over to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

She says, "Growing up in Memphis, I have always admired St. Jude's for the magnificent work they do. Knowing that I would be contributing even in this small way made designing this shoe really special. My stylist, Penny Lovell, and I came up with the idea to do a classic beautiful shoe in a fun stand-out color and I love this shade of orange."

'Welcome To People' Is Now 'People Like Us'; Eric Bana & Olivia Wilde-Led Thriller Retitled 'Deadfall'

Alex Kurtzman is best known as one half of the blockbuster-scripting duo with Roberto Orci ("Transformers," "Star Trek"), but last year, he ventured out solo making his directorial debut with a family dramedy known as "Welcome To People." Starring Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks, Olivia Wilde and Michelle Pfeiffer, the project is one we're keen to check out, but we'll now have to look for a different title on box office screens with the DreamWorks pic now going by "People Like Us."

Co-scripted with Orci and Jody Lambert, the story centers on a twenty-something fast-talking business man (Pine) who, after the death of his father, must deliver $150,000 in cash to the alcoholic sister (Banks) he didn’t know he had, and her son, a 12-year-old with major anger management issues.
