Ted Mapes was born on a Nebraska wheat ranch. His father, John H. Mapes, also had cattle, horses, and mules. When Ted Mapes was inducted into the Stuntmen's Hall of Fame, featured speakers at the banquet were both Charles Starrett and Jimmy Stewart. Gloria Stewart, wife of Jimmy, was also present.
