Howl at the Moon and at Silly Jokes with Attack of the Werewolves: A Movie Review

Director/writer: Juan Martínez Moreno. Cast: Carlos Areces, Secun de la Rosa, Mabel Rivera, Luis Zahera, Gorka Otxoa, Manuel Manquiña and Tomás Cimadevilla. Attack of the Werewolves knows many forms. This film has also been called Game of Werewolves and Lobos de Arga. If one directly translates the Spanish title into English, then it becomes the much simpler Werewolves of Arga. This final title is less than stellar, though. This review will call this picture Attack of the Werewolves, which is the United Kingdom title. Attack of the Werewolves is a Spanish language film and an entertaining one at that. This title blends horror elements with comedy. So, the tone of the film is light-hearted. Attack Of The Werewolves DVD Review

Director: Juan Martínez Moreno

Cast: Gorka Otxoa, Secun de la Rosa, Carlos Areces, Luis Zahera, Mabel Rivera, Manuel Manquiña

Running Time: 96 mins

Certificate: 15

Synopsis: Tomás Mariño (Otxoa) is a struggling writer who returns to the town he grew up in (Arga) to receive an award, or so he is told, and to start working on his next novel. However, he soon learns that the townsfolk plan on using him to break a century-old curse plaguing the village and its inhabitants.

If you can power through the slightly shaky opening half an hour, which somewhat laboriously sets up the narrative in this Spanish horror comedy, then the rewards are definitely there for the taking. Moreno, who also wrote the screenplay, clearly demonstrates sound knowledge of the genre he deconstructs with heartfelt accuracy.

He hits practically every beat of the man versus beast horror formula, from the telling of the fantastical origin

Paul Naschy gets (literally) animated for The Apostle

  • Fangoria
The latest vehicle for Spanish horror legend Paul Naschy (a.k.a. Jacinto Molina) started shooting recently in Galicia, Spain, and marks yet another departure in his varied four-decade career. It sees him receiving the same treatment as another international horror icon, Boris Karloff in Mad Monster Party?—namely, being transformed into a stop-motion puppet.

The Apostle (O APÓSTOLO) is an animated feature-length film combining “terror, humor and fantasy” in the Gothic style of Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, though the producers tell Fango that visually, the production is taking inspiration from the likes of Roman Polanski’s The Fearless Vampire Killers and Burton’s Sleepy Hollow. The plot concerns an escaped convict and his attempts to recover loot which he hid years before in a decrepit house in an isolated, fog-bound village. Murderous old yokels, strange disappearances, ghosts, a weird priest, the shadow of bubonic plague, a sinister old
