Morning Meme: "Dredd" Bombs, Billie Joe Armstrong Heads To Rehab, and We Head To "BreakBad Mountain"

  • The Backlot
It was a bad weekend at the box office, with a three way tie at $13 million betweenHouse At the End of the Street, The Trouble With the Curve, and End of Watch. But nothing was quite as bad as the opening for Dredd 3D, which only took in $6.3 million, and half of that was probably from AfterElton members.

Fox has revived a reality show concept set in dysfunctional workplaces where the employees get to vote on whether an employee gets fired. I wonder how this got cleared through legal?

Green Day has apologized to fans for Billie Joe Armstrong's outburst, and said specifically that Clear Channel didn't cut their set, but they didn't say it wasn't cut. It was also announced that Armstrong was entering rehab for unspecified reasons.

Morning Meme:Chris Hardwick Makes It Big, "Ghostbusters 3" Lives, and Nick Adams Has Got Back!

  • The Backlot
One of my least favorite talking heads, Nancy Grace went off on one of her trademark rants against a mother who got drunk and rolled over on her infant, allegedly smothering him to death. Nancy screamed about "Vodka Mom" and wanting to know why murder charges hadn't been filed. The mother was so distraught, she doused herself in flammable liquid, set fire to herself and died. So are manslaughter charges pending against Grace?

Rep. Barney Frank says that while a few of his Republican colleagues offered private congratulations on his marriage to Jim Ready, most have remained curiously silent on the joyous, historic event.

132 House Democrats have filed an amicus brief with the Ninth Circuit in the case of Golinski v. U.S. Office of Personnel Management, opposing the use of the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group to defend Doma, which they say is unconstitutional.

Morning Meme: Gareth Thomas Talks About "Shedding His Fear," "Real Steel" Knocks Out "Footloose," and "The Walken Dead"

The day Zachary Quinto came out, we have rugby star Gareth Thomas penning a piece about how the Independent's Pink List, now voting, inspired him to shed his fear, and come out, but on his own schedule. Hopefully Quinto's coming out can do the same.

Occupy Wall Street continued this weekend, and spread both nationally and globally. It even made its way to Charleston, Wv. There are some conflicting reports about what led the NYPD to lock customers in a Citibank and arrest them as they tried to close their accounts.

Farewell Betty Ford, one of the most honest and upfront First Ladies the United States has ever known. Alan Cumming has been signed to a new three year deal for The Good Wife, which probably bodes well for both his character and the show.

In what has to be more effective that mailing bars of soap to the network, Hoover has just pulled all their advertising from ABC – not just daytime – to protest the cancellation of All My Children and One Life To Live. Not that it will have any effect, but it’s a great gesture.

Snails & Oysters: Where Are All the Bisexual Male Celebrities?

  • The Backlot
Welcome back, ladies and gents. Last time we had a really rousing discourse on labels which I found most enlightening. I hope you all did as well!

While researching the particulars of that column, I came across something very interesting. There's a peculiar phenomenon taking place in the weird world of celebrity that many of you have probably noticed: women are coming forward by the baker’s dozen and announcing their bisexuality. In case you haven't noticed, Google it for yourselves. If you do a search for "female bisexual celebrity," you get a half dozen solid hits.

Try the same search using "male" instead of "female" and you get ... a lot of articles asking where all of the bi men are at. Most of them are by AfterElton!

Anna Paquin, Lady Gaga, and Lindsay Lohan are just a few of the notable female celebrities to take up the bi label recently.

Snails & Oysters: The Bisexual Perspective on ... Labels

  • The Backlot
Welcome back to Snails & Oysters: The Bisexual Perspective! First up, why did I switch from Tiger Cub to my real name? It was a tough decision, because I am very fond of that nickname and, frankly, I feel a little naked without my stripes. But it was the right thing to do. In a column where I take on various groups, people and entities for propagating bi-invisibility (maybe binvisibility? Nah...) it would be disingenuous for me to hide behind a nom de plume.

However, you lot aren’t my getting my face pic. I draw the line there!

Next, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to all for the warm welcome I received in the comments of the first column. It really humbles me to hear so many bisexuals coming forward and saying how grateful they are for Snails & Oysters.

I also love the fierce debate this column is generating!

The Adorkable Matthew M. Brown

  • The Backlot
We're not ones to gush like schoolgirls over cute guys...

Oh, who are we kidding, of course we do. Still, you can hardly blame us when we come across a young gentleman as impressive as Matthew Michael Brown.

This 24-year old Uc Berkeley grad now makes his home in San Diego where he's a gay rights activist and Mr. Gay San Diego 2010 winner.

Matthew is also a huge videogame fan, and that led him to apply for the second season of Sony Playstation's reality series The Tester where he competed as "Gaymer."

Matthew ultimately won that competition and now is employed by Playstation as a game testing analyist. Geeks that we are around here, we can't decide whether we want to date him... or be him.

Matthew recently was interviewed by Hunk du Jour and we especially liked the advice he had for Glbt youth:

"Well, I'm not going to

AfterElton Briefs: A Pose-able Russell Tovey, Ryan Murphy Teases Ricky Martin For "Glee," and a Look at "Angels In America"

They got the ears right on the wolf at least.

Russell Tovey had a goal to be an action figure. The under-appreciated star may not have caught the eye of Mattel yet, but the wardrobe department made sure his dream came true. Click through for the Being Human-specific accessories it came with. True fact: I have never managed to sit through all of Titanic. Now I feel guilty as Gloria Stuart has passed away at the age of 100. Our thoughts are with her family and friends. Twitterwatch: Celebrity Identity Crisis Edition

  • The Backlot
I want Adam Bouska to airbrush me back to 1994.

Here at Twitterwatch we experience identity crises every week when we take thirty celebrities' disparate tweets over the course of a week and try and find a narrative. But when the celebrities themselves don't seem to know who they are, things get very meta and we start drinking before noon.

Sasha Roiz, who plays a same-sex loving gangster on Caprica, gets in touch with his younger self while supporting equality. I've often wished I lived somewhere NOH8 did a photoshoot, because I could use some of Adam Bouska's airbrushing myself. Sasha, he was hot enough without the help.

Meanwhile, Boy George weighs in on Lady Gaga/Madonna comparisons with a fairly succinct bit of logic - and we all play dress up to an extent. At least Boy George's desire to pretend has some sass.

As far as acting like

Meet the Gay Housemate of "Real World: New Orleans"

Preston Robertson James

The last cycle of Real World, set in Washington, D.C., was relatively highbrow in its Glbt (emphasis on the "B" representation), and cast member Mike Manning was a particular favorite around here.

Before that there was Derek Chavez (Real World: Cancun) and Jd Ordonez (Real World: Brooklyn) – both also immensely likable guys who generally got on very well with their housemates.

This season the MTV series heads south to New Orleans, and it looks like they're going to be serving up a far more polarizing queer cast member.

Meet Preston Robertson James. Here's how he's officially presented in his Real World bio:

Preston's first childhood memory is of crying in the back seat of the car while his mother went to score crack. Needless to say, his family life was anything but ideal. When he was 17, his mother essentially abandoned him, leaving Preston to fend for himself.

This weekend in Los Angeles, the Human Rights Campaign (Hrc), the nation’s largest Glbt civil rights organization, held their Annual Awards Gala. This year Kathy Griffin received an Ally for Equality Award.

Comic Bridget McManus (Brunch with Bridget) worked the red carpet for us at the event and asked Kathy for tips on kissing girls and what kind of lesbian she would be. She also talked to Meredith Baxter about life post-coming out.

Also stopping by to chat with Bridget were Louis van Amstel (Dancing with the Stars), Mike Manning (Real World: D.C.), Blake Lewis (American Idol), and several others.

Check it out after the break!

Portia de Rossi was also honored with the Hrc Visibility Award.

Other guests included Oprah's favorite money maven, Suze Orman, "Real World D.C.'s" Mike Manning and "American Idol's" Blake Lewis.

Meet Your Gay of the Week: Mike Manning

  • The Backlot
The comments for this week's Battle of the Network Gays were especially heated. Many were unhappy with the inclusion of Johnny Weir, others felt frustration that a talented black fashion designer seemed to be garnering less votes than some hunky white kid, while yet others were perturbed that a reality show contestant with limited accomplishments other than coming out as bisexual on a TV show was leading in the polls against an Olympic athlete.

Ultimately, Real World: D.C.'s Mike Manning took the crown. But just as he did at the Olympics, Weir made a respectable showing.

Join us Friday when we present four new contenders for the throne!

Note: If there's someone you think should be nominated this week, please comment with your suggestion here – or private message me.

Battle of the Network Gays: February 19, 2010

  • The Backlot
Every week we pick the gay characters, actors, or reality show personalities who have most impressed us in television (or pop culture in general), and leave it to you, the keepers of the flame, to decide who will be crowned Gay of the Week.

This week's candidates have one thing in common: They're all real live people. Sorry popular gay TV characters, you're sitting this round out. Go hit up TNT. All those "Characters Wanted" ads must mean they're hiring. Besides, they sure could use some gay on that channel!

This week's real live candidates for Gay of the Week after the break.

Project Runway's Anthony Williams

Why? Winning last Thursday's challenge, nabbing the cover of Marie Claire, asking last night's Mini Me models if they "had an off switch", and just being the most entertaining contestant left this season.

'Real World D.C.' Mike Manning is single: 'Valentine's Day is gonna suck'

  • Pop2it
We know it's hard to believe since on "Real World D.C.," Mike Manning is definitely not hurting for admirers. But when Zap2it talked with him about his Valentine's Day plans, we were shocked to hear he doesn't have any.

"It's gonna suck," says Mike. "I don't have a valentine." Obviously, his D.C. guy didn't stick around.

In fact, Mike is on a plane coming back from Boston Sunday (Feb. 14).

"I've been doing a lot of appearances to promote the show," explains Mike. "I've just been so busy right now that I don't even have time to date anybody."

The show's most experienced bisexual (D.C. roomie, Emily Schromm, is a bi newbie compared to Mike) finds himself single for the first time in five years, but it sounds like he's ready to mingle again.

"I had a serious girlfriend, then I had a serious boyfriend," says the Denver native.

Johnny Weir still fears for his safety after fur threats, stays in Olympic Village

  • Pop2it
Olympic ice skater, the fabulous Johnny Weir, has decided to stay in the Olympic Village for fear of his safety after "serious threats" from fur activists, the Associate Press reports.

Last month, Weir wore white fox fur on his costume in the free skate at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Fur activists went nuts and Weir says that both he and his costume designer received threats from animal rights groups.

He announced in early February that he would replace the fur with faux.

"I made this decision after several threats were sent to me about disrupting my performance in the Olympic Games and my costume designer, Stephanie Handler, was repeatedly sent messages of hate and disgust," said the flamboyant skater in a statement to press. "I do not want something as silly as my costume disrupting my second Olympic experience and my chance at a medal, a dream I

'Real World D.C.'s' Mike Manning on fave Olympic snowboarders Shaun White and Gretchen Bleiler

  • Pop2it
Zap2it had a chance to talk to "Real World D.C.'s" controversial Christian bisexual Mike Manning about the 2010 Winter Olympics on Friday (Feb.12).

He may not have been able to choose his seven roommates, but when it came to Olympians, Mike knew exactly who he'd want to hang with.

"I love everything about the winter sports," says Mike. "Anything that has to do with the snow is my favorite. I love snowboarding. I love skiing. I love all that stuff. Those guys are really talented."

When we asked him if he had any Olympic favorites or crushes, snowboarders came to mind.

"If I could meet Shaun White, that would be pretty badass," says Mike as our minds went straight to the gutter. "No, no, no, not like a crush. I'm saying if I could just hang out with him and swap stories, that'd be pretty awesome. He just seems like a chill,
