Son of author Norman Mailer and actress Beverly Bentley, brother of Michael Mailer, Matthew Mailer, Kate Mailer.
Has performed in theater, and has recently cut back on film appearances to focus his stage career. In 2003, he co-starred with his father, novelist Norman Mailer, in an adaptation of "Long Day's Journey Into Night."
"I caught the acting bug early. My mother was rehearsing 'The Dutchman' in Provincetown at a theater called Act Four when she started, and nursing me, as well. My father was very supportive because he's an artist...I was born in New York City., but lived in Provincetown from age 4 to age 12. It was terrific growing up by the sea. I wanted to be a marine biologist for many years, so if acting doesn't pan out, I can always go back to school." Interview, 1990.
