Roberto Orci has dropped out as the executive producer on the Power Rangers movie being developed by Lionsgate. Not because anything is wrong with the production, but because of his commitment to Star Trek 3, which he is writing and directing.
Regardless of the set back the studio is still moving forward with the movie and they are still planning to release it on July 22nd, 2016. Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (X-Men: First Class, Thor) are currently writing the script. Haim Saban, creator of the Power Rangers franchise, is producing.
The movie will be a modern reinvention of the classic series which followed a group of ordinary high school kids given extraterrestrial powers who must harness those powers as a team to save the world from evil alien creatures.
I'm curious to see what this movie will be like. The series was so cheesy. I wonder if they'll bring that cheesiness along for the ride, »

Anyone out there excited about a Roberto Orci-led big screen reboot of The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is about to be really sad. With all of the recent buzz surrounding production ramping up for his directorial debut, which happens to be Star Trek 3, Orci has now said that he can no longer exec-produce a new Power Rangers. Citing a schedule conflict, Orci is no longer attached to the project in any form.
But take heart, Power Ranger fans, because Haim Saban and Lionsgate are still adamant that there'll be a new film in theaters on July 22, 2016. As we speak, Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (X-Men: First Class, Thor) are hard at work on the script. The story will once again center on a group of everyday teenagers, who are suddenly chosen by an extra-terrestrial being named Zordon to protect earth from evil, intergalactic forces. He bestows them with great powers, »

As the final acquisition deals roll in on Toronto’s 2014 film festival movies, a couple of overriding themes emerged that bode well for the appetite for indie fare and have sellers smacking their lips for Afm, Sundance, Berlin and beyond. In a fest where Harvey Weinstein left his checkbook home and didn’t make a single splashy deal, I have never seen so many new players make statement buys at a festival than happened in Toronto.
The other intriguing development came on the fest’s biggest deal, when Paramount Pictures swooped into the auction of the Chris Rock-directed comedy Top Five, and blew buyers out of the water by paying $12.5 million for worldwide rights. It was the second straight fest where Paramount did this, after the studio made a precedent-setting pre-buy Cannes deal for the Denis Villeneuve-directed Amy Adams sci-fi film Story Of Your Life. Some established indie »

Less than two months after Roberto Orci signed on to executive produce Lionsgate's Power Rangers movie, Deadline reports that he had to pull out of the project, because of his commitment to direct Paramount's Star Trek 3.
This does not change Lionsgate's plans to release the film on July 22, 2016, although they still do not have a director attached at this time. The story is a reinvention of the hit TV series Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, which followed a group of high school kids who gain incredible powers, which they use to help save the world.

Haim Saban, the unshakably pro-Israel media billionaire, says that Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz, who have taken stridently anti-Israel positions, probably did so because they lack “facts.” Bardem and Cruz recently signed a widely circulated open letter that condemned Israel for its actions in Gaza. “I think Bardem and Cruz are simply misinformed,” Saban told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview. “I think that once somebody bothers informing them and educating them on the facts, on what is happening on both sides, I don't they would call [the Israeli campaign in Gaza] 'genocide.' They would better understand that

Because you apparently demanded it, Variety reports the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will be getting the reboot treatment from Lionsgate on July 22, 2016 and will see a reimagining of the origins of the group of teens gifted with extraterrestrial powers that they use to save the world from monstrous threats. The reboot will be scripted by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, with Haim Saban, Brian Casentini, Allison Shearmur, and Roberto Orci producing. The popular franchise debuted on Fox Kids in 1993 and has continually existed in eighteen different incarnations on television.
This new reboot is not the first time that the series will make the leap to the big screen. In 1995 20th Century Fox produced Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, which became quite the success after grossing over $66 million on a $15 million budget.
