Martin Carr reviews the sixth episode of The Strain

Manacled by a cast iron dog collar and naked except for stained underwear a man sits surrounded by empty food wrappers. As the padded cell door opens he begins begging with his captor. Slowly Thomas Eichorst (Richard Sammel) begins turning the crank handle of a medieval pulley system, drawing his guest inch by inch towards a stone mantle smeared with blood. A neck rest fashioned on one side is there for one purpose only. As fear gives way to resignation Eichorst (Richard Sammel) runs a paternal hand through his hair.

Martin Carr reviews the fifth episode of The Strain

Abraham Sektakin (David Bradley) and Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll) are tucking into a late breakfast in the Arnot family kitchen. Steaming hot scrambled egg on toast is consumed, while father and daughter Arnot lay decapitated in the basement. Brandishing the grounded airplane passenger list they make plans and discuss their options.

Over in Westchester county attorney Joan Luss (Leslie Hope) is in the latter stages of contagion, complaining of flu like symptoms and unable to keep anything down. Her motherly concern towards the children is taking on a more predatory demeanour, something the housekeeper is more than well aware of. Meanwhile Gabriel Bolivar (Jack Kesy) and Eldritch Palmer (Jonathan Hyde) are receiving emergency house calls from medical specialists. For one dying is inevitable for another a small mercy; and we should all be thankful for those.

‘The Strain’: These Ain’t No Caterpillars

10 August 2014 8:00 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

[This is a review of The Strain season 1, episode 5. There will be Spoilers.]

The Strain has had ups and downs in every single episode since the very first, but the show’s been working because, typically, the good outweighs the bad by a lot. Not in ‘Runaways,’ though.

That’s not the case for Mia Maestro’s Nora though. That last moment with her and her mother ...

The Strain Survival Guide

Everything you need to know about Guillermo del Toro’s new horror television series…

A Boeing 747 lays dead on JFK airport’s runway, its lights off and crew not responding. Frantic control tower officials blame ‘technical faults’ and ‘terrorism,’ though there are no signs of struggle or escape. Whatever caused this is still locked inside.

No, this isn’t the beginning of Paul Greengrass’ latest movie, or a morally ambiguous Derren Brown special. It’s the opening of The Strain, Guillermo del Toro’s bestselling vampire-epidemic trilogy of books, which then became a television series.

This is the story of those books. Of their journey from an eight-year-old Mexican boy’s already-twisted imagination to failed pitches, unlikely bromances and, eventually, a television series that could redefine vampirism for the modern age.

The Strain doesn’t restrain its soul to just vampires. It’s also a global conspiracy, virus outbreak thriller »
