Scandal is about to get injected with The Strain. Mia Maestro, who stars in the FX vampire drama, has joined Season 5 of the Kerry Washington-led series. As Deadline reports, details regarding Maestro’s character (like all new ones on Scandal) are being kept under wraps, but the role is described as “major recurring,” which means that she should have a pretty big impact in the show’s upcoming fifth season. No other information about when she will make her Scandal debut or how many episodes she will recur in is available at this time. As mentioned above, Maestro is currently a series regular on FX’s The Strain, portraying the character of Nora Martinez. Her other TV credits include Alias, The Summit, Person of Interest, and, most recently, Hannibal. Maestro’s casting comes on the heels of two of Scandal‘s recurring players from last season, Portia de Rossi »

Remember last fall, when Castle‘s titular mystery writer became the mystery, resurfacing several months after his almost-wedding, and with partial amnesia?
Beckett & Co. promptly exhausted NYPD resources to investigate the rather personal matter of Castle’s vanishing — and with that came a cost, as revealed in the above deleted scene from the Castle: The Complete Seventh Season DVD set, hitting streets Sept. 1.
Also featured on the DVD set is the “uncut” version of Rick’s Raging Heat webmercial, the “Definition of Love” music video that Ryan »

Sporting a new look and getting the word out on his method for killing strigoi, Dr. Ephraim "Eph" Goodweather is a busy man on FX's The Strain. Daily Dead recently took part in a conference call with the equally busy actor who plays Eph—Corey Stoll—who discussed his character's alcoholism in the vampire apocalypse and growing up near Christopher Reeve in real life.
Stoll on how Eph's quest to kill The Master is both professional and personal:
"It’s really both. Obviously it’s personal now that Kelly has turned and is actively trying to turn Zach, but I think just his personality is such, too, that he’s won at everything pretty much in his life, up till now. Now he’s in a situation where he’s lost more in the last week than he has in his entire life. He’s always been a very alpha guy and very type A. »

The battle between the strigoi and the humans will continue past Season 2, as FX has officially renewed The Strain for a third season that will premiere next summer. Though an official episode count for the third season is not yet known, it's likely that we could see a 13-episode order identical to the first two seasons.
Press Release (via TV by the Numbers): "Los Angeles, August 7, 2015 – The Strain will return for a third season next summer, taking fans even deeper into the thriller from Guillermo del Toro and Carlton Cuse, based off of the best-selling The Strain Trilogy by del Toro and Chuck Hogan, it was announced today by Eric Schrier and Nick Grad, Presidents of Original Programming, FX Networks and FX Productions. The second season of The Strain is currently airing on FX Sundays at 10 Pm e/p.

Played by Miguel Gomez (Southpaw), Augustin 'Gus' Elizalde has consistently been one of the most interesting characters on FX's The Strain, and Daily Dead recently took part in a conference call with Gomez, who discussed facing fear, seeking revenge, and the power of love in the vampiric world of The Strain.
Gomez discusses how Gus' guilt for unknowingly bringing The Master into New York City keeps him focused on revenge:
"Yes, I think that’s what really drives him. I think he feels that he lost his mom, and his brother, and his best friend because of his mistakes, and I think his nature is to be protective of the people he cares about and the people that care about him. So, yes, I think that’s what’s driving him, that revenge and that redemption, and I think he has one goal now and that’s to seek out »

One of the new additions to the cast of FX's The Strain this season is Samantha Mathis (Under the Dome, American Psycho), who plays Councilwoman Justine Feraldo. Daily Dead recently participated in an interview call with Mathis, who discussed her character's determination to kill the bloodthirsty strigoi, Justine's strengths, and much more.
Mathis on early memories of watching vampire movies:
"I remember being five or six years old and sitting in my father’s living room in the summertime, in Brooklyn at night, sort of cuddled between him and my stepmother watching Dracula movies. To see those movies—maybe I wasn’t five or six, maybe I was seven or eight—but those really old Bela Lugosi movies, they terrified me. I think that that sort of continued thematically through several horror movies. Things that go bump in the night. That sort of evil lurking outside your window has »

More humans are starting to become aware of the vampire threat and are fighting back against the strigoi, but is it too late? New photos show a vampire attack out in the open and a new friend for Gus.
"As the second season unfolds, the transformation has begun. It can no longer be denied — New York City is rapidly falling to an evil epidemic, and no one is coming to its rescue. Its citizens must fight or die. Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll) and his unlikely allies tried to take down the embodiment of this evil — the Master — and failed. Now Eph and Dr. Nora Martinez (Mia Maestro) concentrate on creating a biological weapon to wipe out the creatures, while Abraham Setrakian (David Bradley) searches for an ancient book he hopes will reveal the strigoi’s entire history...and possibly a way to kill them. Meanwhile, the Master is out for revenge, »

In the season premiere of The Strain Season 2, we find that Abraham is still on the hunt for The Master, while Eph and Nora may have come up with a new plan for a cure. We have new photos from episode 202 that don't give much away, but show progress being made on both fronts. With that being said, I have a hunch that it's not going to be as easy as it looks...

The first season of The Strain was a splattery slow-burn affair, chronicling the demise of Manhattan as the city fell to a virulent vampire plague. With season two, the series continues the blood-spattered mayhem, but the slow-burn approach is long gone and the characters are fully embroiled in the daily warfare of the vampire apocalypse. Earlier this year, I visited the set up in Toronto, where I got to see some of that mayhem first-hand and chat with the cast about what's coming up in season two. While on set I had the chance to speak with Guillermo Del Toro and Carlton Cuse, and a huge portion of the cast cast including Corey Stoll (Eph), Mia Maestro (Nora), Kevin Durand (Vasily Fet), Jonathan Hyde (Eldrich Palmer), Richard Sammel (Thomas Eichhorst), Ruta Gedmintas (Dutch), Jack Kesy (Bolivar), and Natalie Brown (Kelly).
