Newswire: Michelle Williams joins Adam Driver in Leos Carax’s Sparks musical

Ever since the French filmmaker Leos Carax announced Annette as his next film, the project has seemed just too strange to survive the often perilous road to financing and production: an English-language musical from the director of The Lovers On The Bridge and Holy Motors, with original songs by the cult art-pop duo Sparks, set to star Adam Driver as a widowered stand-up comedian with a supernaturally gifted baby daughter. And yet somehow it has found itself a big-deal distributor and survived the departure of Rooney Mara, who was attached to co-star but apparently decided that doing two eccentric art-film musicals in one year was a little much.

The project has finally settled on a replacement for Mara, with Michelle Williams filling her vacated (and still undisclosed) role. As reported by The Film Stage, Williams had been rumored as the project’s new female lead since being spotted with Carax »

Michelle Williams Replaces Rooney Mara in Leos Carax’s ‘Annette’

Following his one-of-a-kind Holy Motors in 2012, Leos Carax is finally set to begin shooting his follow-up this summer, the English-language musical Annettte, however its casting has not been without its hiccups. After being attached for some time, both Rooney Mara and Rihanna dropped out, but now it looks like the cast is materializing. She was spotted with the director earlier this year (see below tweet) and now Michelle Williams has officially come aboard.

According to Cécile Olivy of the agency Mcasting, the casting is now confirmed, which also reveals a shoot will kick off in July and conclude in September. The musical tells the tragic story of a stand-up comedian (Adam Driver) whose opera singer wife is deceased. He finds himself alone with his 2-year-old daughter who has a surprising gift. Featuring music from Sparks and distribution from Amazon Studios, this project continues quite a streak for Williams, who had »

Newswire: Amazon will distribute Leos Carax’s bizarre Sparks musical

14 March 2017 2:00 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

From Deadline comes the news that Amazon Studios will be the U.S. and Canadian distributor for Annette, the anticipated (and seemingly insane) new movie from the idiosyncratic French writer-director Leos Carax. Described as a musical about a stand-up comedian, the film stars Adam Driver and features original songs by brothers Ron and Russell Mael, also known as the cult art-pop duo Sparks. Rooney Mara, who was originally attached in a leading role, has since dropped out, reportedly due to her commitment to another bizarre-sounding arthouse musical, the Mica Levi-scored, Brady Corbet-directed Vox Lux.

Annette, which will only be Carax’s sixth film in 33 years, promises to be the largest project that the director has undertaken since 1991’s The Lovers Of The Bridge. (Which, coincidentally, came out on Blu-ray today, with a booklet essay by yours truly.) The filmmaker, whose real name is Alex Dupont, is the son »
