Ken Watanabe May Replace Gary Oldman as The Colonel in Akira; New Contenders Up for Tetsuo

23 November 2011 2:26 PM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Warner Bros. casting for their upcoming live-action adaptation of Akira, based on the Japanese manga ("comic book") series by Katsuhiro Otomo has been pretty, well, Caucasian so far. Garrett Hedlund is set to play heroic biker gang leader Shotaro Kaneda, while Kristen Stewart (The Twilight Saga) has been offered the role of Kei, a powerful medium and Kaneda's love interest, and Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham Carter were offered the roles of The Colonel and Lady Miyako, respectively. Like we said, pretty Caucasian.

Of course, the live-action Akira will take place in New Manhattan, unlike the Neo-Tokyo of the manga series and 1988 anime adaptation, but that hasn't stopped a furor of online criticism. George Takei (Star Trek) has led an online petition against the "whitewashing" of Akira and recently told The Advocate that if the studio continues with its casting, they could "offend Asians, number 1; number 2, they offend the fans". Whatever the motivation, »

"Akira" loses Gary Oldman, offers part to Ken Watanabe

23 November 2011 12:49 PM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

As the casting process for "Akira" narrows down its search for its lead actors, there are some change-ups already occurring. Gary Oldman had previously been eyed to play The Colonel in the upcoming adaptation of the 1988 cult anime, but hadn't signed on officially. New reports now say that he's off the part, though Warner Bros has a potential replacement lined up already.

Twitch is reporting that the studio is looking to Ken Watanabe to replace Oldman as the military commander in "Akira." They've offered him the part, and are now just waiting to hear back confirmation. Watanabe is one of the best-known Japanese actors in Hollywood, and thus would be a good fit for the role.

So far, the only actor who is pretty much confirmed for the flick is Garrett Hedlund as Kaneda. Offers are also out to Kristen Stewart to play Kei and Helena Bonham-Carter to play Miyako. »

Ken Watanabe Up For ‘Akira’ After Gary Oldman Passes

22 November 2011 7:13 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

With Garrett Hedlund and Kristen Stewart leading Jaume Collet-Serra‘s big-budget Hollywood Akira, many have been in an uproar over the whitewashing of the cast for this adaptation of the Japanese manga. Just after Gary Oldman stressed to Collider this weekend that his involvement with the project was just a rumor, we now have news of another actor stepping it.

Twitch reports that the film may finally be getting its Japanese touch, as Ken Watanabe has just been offered the part of the The Colonel, the powerful head of government who administers the psychic tests and eventually goes head-to-head with Tetsuo. Watanabe has had Hollywood cross-over with The Last Samurai and Batman Begins, recently getting in the worldwide spotlight with Inception. He would certainly be a good, and more importantly fitting, choice for the role.

Logan Marshall-Green, Toby Kebbell, Paul Dano, And More Test For Akira Co-Lead

22 November 2011 1:00 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

The past few weeks have seen some excellent progress being made on the Akira remake front. Garrett Hedlund has been selected to star as one of the film’s two male leads, given the role of Kaneda. Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham Carter have both been approached to star. And just last week, Kristen Stewart was offered the lead female role of Kei, which I think is a brilliant choice.

News now comes from Collider that there are some great names in the mix for the other male lead, Tetsuo, with seven names having tested for the role yesterday and the day before: Logan Marshall-Green, D.J. Cotrona, Toby Kebbell, Richard Madden, Rami Malek, and Paul Dano and Alden Ehrenreich retesting for the part.

Unknown’s Jaume Collet-Serra is taking the helm for the project, which has a $90m. budget, and it’s definitely something I’m looking forward to. I »
