Norman Lear Teams Up With Peter Tolan to Revive His Senior Citizen Comedy ‘Guess Who Died’

Norman Lear Teams Up With Peter Tolan to Revive His Senior Citizen Comedy ‘Guess Who Died’
Norman Lear is moving one step closer to making his long-gestating comedy “Guess Who Died” a reality.

Emmy-winning writer Peter Tolan (“The Larry Sanders Show,” “Rescue Me”) has joined the project as co-writer with Lear on the show, which is set in a retirement village. Lear has been working on the show for at least seven years, and frequently brings the project up in interviews. But until recently, he expressed dismay that it might never get made.

But now the legendary TV producer, at age 94, is on another hot streak. Following the recent successful remake of Lear’s 1970s sitcom “One Day at a Time,” now reimagined at Netflix with stars Justina Machado and Rita Moreno, Sony Pictures TV is developing “Guess Who Died” as a spec comedy script.

That means it’s still in very early stages of development, but the addition of Tolan gives it more momentum. Tolan

Poehler has two sons (Abel James, 6½, and Archibald “Archie” William Emerson, 8½, with ex-husband Will Arnett) and Ferrell has three (Axel, 7, Mattias, 10, and Magnus, 13, with wife Viveca Paulin) — and both have some funny and sage advice for any future parents of boys.

“There’s going to be pee everywhere!” Poehler tells People for this week’s issue.

“One Day at a Time” Co-Showrunner Gloria Calderon Kellett Signs Deal with Sony TV

Gloria Calderon Kellett: Kellett’s Twitter account

If “this is it” for “One Day at a Time” co-showrunner Gloria Calderon Kellett, then she must be having a ball. The co-creator and Ep of the updated Norman Lear series has inked an overall deal with Sony Pictures TV, Deadline writes. The two-year agreement will see Kellett continue as exec producer and co-showrunner of the Justina Machado and Rita Moreno-toplined Netflix comedy. Kellett will also have the opportunity to develop and direct other projects for Sony via her production company, Big Girl Pants Pictures.

One Day at a Time” — a modern reboot of Lear’s ’70s sitcom of the same name — centers on the Alvarezes, a Cuban-American family. Machado plays divorced veteran and single mom Penelope and Moreno portrays Penelope’s mother, Lydia. Isabella Gomez (“Matador”) and newcomer Marcel Ruiz star as Penelope’s kids, and Todd Grinnell (“Grace and Frankie”) plays the family’s friend and building manager, Schneider. Lear serves as an Ep on the show alongside Kellett and co-creator/co-showrunner Mike Royce (“Everybody Loves Raymond”).

“Kellett pulled from her own life experience in shaping the show,” Deadline details. “Her parents immigrated to America from Cuba during Operation Peter Pan.”

The series’ first season, which debuted in January, has tackled subjects like Ptsd, white privilege, and sexism. It will return for Season 2 in 2018.

Kellett cut her teeth writing on “How I Met Your Mother” from 2005 to 2007. She won an Alma award for penning the episode “How I Met Everyone Else.” “Rules of Engagement,” “Devious Maids,” and “iZombie” are among her other credits.

One Day at a Time” Co-Showrunner Gloria Calderon Kellett Signs Deal with Sony TV was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

‘Girls,’ ‘You’re the Worst’ Probe Relationship Drama in the Modern Age

‘Girls,’ ‘You’re the Worst’ Probe Relationship Drama in the Modern Age
It’s no secret that dating and relationships come with tons of drama. So it’s ironic that TV’s comedies are the ones that often have the most realistic examples of modern courtship.

“Obviously our characters are extreme. I always say we’re presenting a heightened version of reality, but I think we try to represent the messiness, and I think people can relate to it because there’s bad in everything that’s good,” says Stephen Falk, the creator of Fxx’s “You’re the Worst,” a “romantic comedy” that has seen couples struggle with open relationships, faltering careers, Ptsd, depression and, by the end of its third season, commitment. “I think people relate to the flawed nature of everyone … there’s also probably a bit of, ‘Well,

sh–t, these characters are absolute messes, so at least I am healthy, comparatively.’”

Those extra hits of authenticity can also be seen in creator-star Donald Glover’s

'One Day at a Time' Star Rita Moreno on Avoiding Caricature With Her "Inappropriate" Character

One Day at a Time. In Norman Lear's Netflix reboot of his 1970s sitcom, about a single mom raising her two kids, the family this time is Cuban-American and the mom — Penelope, an army vet dealing with Ptsd, played by Justina Machado — also has to contend with her meddling live-in mother. Moreno's Lydia is never without her makeup, speaks with a strong Cuban accent (Moreno herself is Puerto Rican) and never keeps an opinion to herself. The octogenarian and Egot is...

Norman Lear, 'One Day at a Time' Cast Reflect on Changing Opportunities for Latinos in Hollywood

Norman Lear thought he was heading to the City Club in downtown Los Angeles on Friday evening to support Netflix's reboot of One Day at a Time. He had no idea that the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's inaugural Pioneer Award was specifically for him.

In characteristic self-deprecating fashion, the legendary television creator continuously deflected attempts by Rep. Joaquin Castro, chair of Chci (a nonpartisan nonprofit), to turn attention to him, telling those gathered with him onstage — One Day at a Time stars Justina Machado, Rita Moreno and Tony Plana, plus comedian Paul Rodriguez, star of Lear's...

Emmy Contenders 2017: Lead Actress in a Comedy

Emmy Contenders 2017: Lead Actress in a Comedy
Julia Louis-Dreyfus set a record last year when she won her fifth consecutive Emmy for playing the titular “Veep,” and is a lock for a sixth nomination (if not a win) this year. Only three other former nominees are eligible this year: Tracee Ellis Ross, coming off a Golden Globe win for “Black-ish”; Ellie Kemper, always upbeat on “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”; and Lily Tomlin, a beloved performer, for “Grace and Frankie.” Tomlin’s co-star, two-time Oscar winner Jane Fonda, shouldn’t be counted out of the running, particularly following a third season that may heralded as the show’s best yet. Also returning to some of the best reviews of her career was Lena Dunham for the final season of “Girls.” Throwing an interesting twist into the mix is Allison Janney’s choice to move from supporting to lead for “Mom,” a role that has already won her two trophies. She

Meet Jane’s first love!

On Monday’s season three finale of Jane the Virgin, Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) had an unexpected chance encounter with her mysterious first boyfriend, Adam (Teen Wolf’s Tyler Posey) -- a character teased by the all-knowing narrator in a March 27 episode, and it looks like he’ll be sticking around for season four.

“You’re going to need to know what his backstory is, why she never thought she’d see him again [and] why he was her first love. That’s going to take her on a real journey and obviously, there’s big history there,” creator and executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman told a small group of reporters after the finale table read, adding that Jane and Adam will be “grappling with their circumstances.”
