27 October 2003 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

At HBO and the BBC, all roads lead to Rome. After more than three years of development, HBO has given the green light to its epic drama series set in ancient Rome, which the BBC has come on board to co-produce. The two networks have ordered 12 episodes of the series, said to be budgeted at about $5 million per episode. The premiere is slated for 2005 on HBO and BBC Two. Bruno Heller, slated to write most of the series, is executive producing Rome with William J. MacDonald, John Milius and HBO senior vp original programming Anne Thomopoulos. BBC head of drama commissioning Gareth Neame will executive produce for the public broadcaster. Production on the series is scheduled to begin next year and will be based at Rome's Cinecitta Studios with location shoots throughout Europe and North America. »
