Brave (Ultimate Collector's Edition) - Blu-ray Review

28 December 2012 9:12 AM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

In one of the most enjoyable movies of the year, Brave captures the heart and imagination and intrigues. It.s not your typical princess movie so be prepared to be pleasantly surprised. Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald), the aforementioned princess, is adamantly opposed to her Scottish customs of being married to the Lord that wins her hand in the tourney. She doesn.t want to be a princess, which is refreshing. I have watched this movie many times with my daughter, who is three, and she loves it. It.s not so much anti-princess (which my daughter is not opposed to) as it is spirited. Merida is just the kind of girl that is spirited enough to make her »

Thn’s 2012 Rundown – May & June

20 December 2012 3:30 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

As spring bled into summer, we saw the release of the year’s most gargantuan mainstream hit. It was The Avengers (aka Avengers Assemble), in case you spent the last year roaming the arctic regions of Greenland; and even then, an amiable Inuit with a Hulk hoodie probably told you about it.

May

The long awaited release of The Avengers saw cinema-goers turn out in droves. It was seven years in the making, and many hardcore fans had been waiting far longer than that, so thankfully, the majority were not left disappointed. Otherwise, who knows what level of extreme backlash could have erupted… although millions of geeks acutely describing their grievances in a respectful manner on film forums would have been the most likely scenario. Our very own Dan was delighted by what he saw, and described it as being ‘utterly stimulating, satisfyingly scripted and damn right faultless big screen entertainment. »

“Hey You Geeks!!” Looks Back at the Best TV of 2012

16 December 2012 9:12 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

When it came to devising a list of what I felt were the top ten Television shows of 2012 I contemplated sticking with the theme of “Hey You Geeks!!” and centering the list solely on the best sci-fi and nerd related shows on TV. I generally group “Geek TV” into a segment of shows exclusively featuring a sci-fi, comic book, fantasy or horror spin. Unfortunately, that does an injustice to both the term Geek and the medium of Television. Geeks are not held to one or few specific genres and the geek classification can be attached to literally anything if someone is enthusiastic or expertly dedicated to that particular thing. Not to mention, a lot of the sci-fi, horror and comic shows on TV tend to be terrible.

Sure, there are Walking Dead geeks who create memes after each episode and debate every zombie kill and change from the comics. But »

Blu-ray Review: Pixar’s ‘Brave’ Already Deserves Critical Second Look

6 December 2012 4:16 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Disney/Pixar’s “Brave” was largely dismissed by most critics when it was released in theaters this Summer, even if audiences did seem more engaged, pushing the flick to over half-a-billion dollars worldwide and making heroine Merida one of Halloween’s most common costumes. Domestically, the film made more than “Wall-e,” “Ratatouille,” or “Cars 2.” So why did critics let it go so easily?

Rating: 4.0/5.0

I think we’ve reached a point of unnatural expectations for Pixar. If “Brave” didn’t have the brand shared by masterpieces like “Toy Story 3” and “Up” then I think it would have been seen more clearly for what it is — a good-not-great Scottish fairy tale with some storytelling weaknesses but enough quality filmmaking and positive messages to warrant a look. I also think the voice work here from Kelly MacDonald and Emma Thompson was woefully underrated. They’re great. Is “Brave” one of Pixar’s best? »

2013 Annie Award Nominations Announced

3 December 2012 7:22 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Disney withdrew from the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood back in 2010 and even before then it was hard to put much stock in the Annie Awards. Now it's just sort of a blip on the overall award season radar that manages headlines twice a year, once for their nominees and again for their winners, which this year will be announced on Saturday, February 2, 2013. That said, the org announced their 2013 nominees this morning and their Best Feature Film list was made up of eight nominees (a large list considering the lack of quality animated films I've seen this year) including Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, The Rabbi's Cat and Wreck-It Ralph. It is nice not to see something like The Lorax among that list, but I still think this was a year in which the field could have easily been limited to five nominees. »

If you have yet to watch this week’s Boardwalk Empire finale, avert your eyes now. Everyone else, read on…

And here we thought September’s True Blood finale dropped a lot of hemoglobin. Sunday’s third-season ender of Boardwalk Empire boasted an almost three-figure body count, with the award for most pivotal death going to Bobby Cannavale’s ruthless gangster Gyp Rosetti. There were emotional casualties as well (we’re looking at you Margaret), as well as a handful of cliffhangers — several of which are about to be resolved right now.

'Boardwalk Empire': 5 big questions for the season finale

30 November 2012 11:30 AM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) started out Season 3 of "Boardwalk Empire" in full gangster mode, but recent episodes have featured a weakened, threatened Thompson in hiding. Atlantic City's head honcho has almost completely run out of company, true to Jimmy Darmody's dying prophecy. Almost.

Thompson remains staunchly determined to win back his town. With the help of Al Capone, Chalky White, and his brother Eli, Nucky is set to do battle with Gyp Rosetti -- and Sunday's episode is guaranteed to be a bloodbath. But there are quite a few remaining loose ends left to tie, and some big questions for the season finale:

1. Where is Margaret?

Nucky knows about her affair with Owen (Charlie Cox), but audiences didn't see him confront Margaret (Kelly Macdonald) about it (nor did we see her subsequent departure with the children). Where is she? How will she handle her pregnancy now that Owen is dead? »

Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina is opening wider across the Us tomorrow, having been playing in a limited release for the past two weeks, with strong Oscar buzz surrounding Keira Knightley’s fine leading performance.

We saw a new TV spot and a new featurette earlier in the week, and now PopSugar have debuted another featurette, giving us an inside look at the creation of the beautiful costumes for the film with Oscar-nominated costume designer, Jacqueline Durran (Atonement, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), who I hope will pick up her third nomination in January.
