Fantasy Island,” which hailed from Spelling-Goldberg Productions and was created by Gene Levitt, began as a TV movie on the Alphabet before airing there from 1978 to 1984. It starred Ricardo Montalban and Hervé Villechaize as the white-suited host Mr. Roarke and his sidekick Tattoo — and is most remembered for Tattoo’s “The plane! The plane!” catchphrase that opened each episode as travelers arrived on the island to have their wildest dreams come true.

The new version is penned by Sheldon Turner (“X-Men: First Class,” “Up in the Air”) and has plans for a woman to play the host with the most. It will also do away with a literal island »

ABC is set to return to "Fantasy Island" with word today that Sony Pictures Television will team with the network on a revival of the classic late 1970's island drama.

This new version, which has received a script plus penalty order from the network, will include a gender swap this time out. Ricardo Montalban's Mr. Roarke will be replaced with a female character who runs a San Francisco-based company that provides clients with their most intimate, dark or outlandish fantasy.

Sheldon Turner will pen the script and executive produce alongside Jennifer Klein and Josh Berman. This would be the third time ABC has tackled the property, they previously attempted a revival back in 1998 with Malcolm McDowell taking over the Roarke role - that lasted just one season.
