2008 Year in Review: Television

16 December 2008 8:20 PM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Last year in our annual overview of the Year in Television, Malinda Lo wrote, “Though there is still plenty of room for improvement — particularly on broadcast TV — the low points of 2007 do not contradict the fact that lesbian/bi representation on TV this past year has increased and improved significantly.”

Clearly, a lot can change in a year.

Though 2008 comes to a close with word of possible new queer female characters on the horizon in the coming year, the prospects for lesbians and bisexual women on television over the last twelve months have been somewhat grim.

This has been particularly true for lesbians, whose numbers on scripted network television have now dwindled to zero.

While portrayals of lesbian characters on Grey’s Anatomy and Cashmere Mafia (both on ABC) showed initial promise, it wasn’t long before their storylines turned sour and came to a screeching halt, due to either »

Jane Lynch brings it on

16 December 2008 11:00 AM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Hoping to piggyback off the cataclysmic success of Disney's High School Musical movies, Fox has ordered 13 episodes of a musical comedy series called Glee. The one-hour show will follow an idealistic chorus teacher as he tries to inspire a group of ragamuffin students — plus a Zac Efron-esque star quarterback — to musical stardom.

You're probably thinking that High School Musical has already told this story three times, and wondering if there any possible way to make the show fresh and engaging.

Yes, yes there is: Glee will star Jane Lynch — as a cheerleading coach.

Just let that ruminate. This morning you woke up thinking something was missing from your life, but you just couldn't put your finger on it. Now, I am telling you that Fox has created a show where Bring it On meets Sister Act, and Jane Lynch is going to get to say something like, "This is »

Review: Role Models

9 December 2008 9:57 PM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

I've seen some great comedies this year. Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express, Hamlet II, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Burn After Reading, etc. After careful consideration though, I'm going to go out on a limb and say Role Models is my favorite comedy of the year. Sure, it might not be as clever, insightful, or shrewd as the previously mentioned films, but it is the most consistently funny. When I wasn't laughing, I was smiling. What more can you ask from a comedy.

In Role Models, Paul Rudd and Sean William Scott play a couple of energy drink marketing men who, after Rudd's character does something insanely stupid, opt to serve as big brother types to troubled kids at a youth center to avoid doing jail time.

Yes, Role Models sounds like a processed, gimmicky, generic comedy that couldn't possibly work, but the game cast and the rapid fire jokes take the stupid plot to a higher level. »

Tubefilter Tuesday Picks - December 9, 2008

9 December 2008 3:44 PM, PST | Tubefilter.com | See recent Tubefilter News news »

This week is all about animals. Sure, cats and puppies have been web video stars for years, but seldom were good for anything more than a one-time hit. But real live animals (not just the animated sort) are making waves (and landing sponsors) as stars of their own web series. This week's picks, compiled by the Tubefilter News staff, are Rabbit Bites, National Geographic Now and Super Chill Monkey. Rabbit Bites At first glance, it throws you a little—what exactly is going on here? But watch a few episodes of Rabbit Bites from creator Nicholas Quixote and you'll see why the series has been able to pull in the voices of Patton Oswalt, Sidney Blumenthal, Jane Lynch, Garrison Keillor, David Alan Grier and other stars in what The New York Times called, "twisted and sublime." The bi-weekly web series stars two rabbits, Buns and Chou Chou, as they roast »

Exclusive: UK Role Models Poster

2 December 2008 10:30 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Role Models is one of the funnier films you'll see this year (actually, next), and we've got the exclusive on the UK poster for the film.It may look a bit like the Us poster, with Paul Rudd's Danny relieving himself against a wall and Seann William Scott drinking from a brown paper bag, but we here in the UK also get Christopher "McLovin" Mintz-Plasse's role-playing enthusiast Augie in there as well. The plot of the film sees Rudd and Scott assigned to mentor Augie and another boy called Ronnie (the quite astonishingly funny Bobb'e J. Thompson) as community service. The film also stars the quite astonishingly cool and cute Elizabeth Banks and the ever-funny Jane Lynch. We also have some brand-new pics from the film - showing Danny talking to the leaders of the live-action role-playing game that Augie loves, and Augie in his medieval garb. Click below for the full-size version of those. »

DVD Review: Alvin and the Chipmunks (Se) (2007)

26 November 2008 2:49 PM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

If you look at the 10 highest grossing flicks of 2007, Alvin and the Chipmunks provides unquestionably the biggest surprise. An unassuming little animation/live-action hybrid update of the old David Seville characters came with little hype among many bigger hitters in the holiday season. Nonetheless, the flick surpassed virtually all expectations and made a stunning $215 million at the box office.

The vagaries of the .family film. market continue to confound me. Some believe audiences are so starved for relatively inoffensive material that almost anything in that category will score big bucks. However, this ignores the reams of quality .family friendly. efforts that tank. What made Alvin different? I have no idea, but something about it really appealed to mass audiences.

The flick introduces us to a trio of chipmunks: Alvin (voiced by Justin Long), Simon (voiced by Matthew Gray Gubler) and Theodore (voiced by Jesse McCartney). When their home gets cut »

Role Models

7 November 2008 1:00 PM, PST | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

Release Date: Nov. 7

Director: David Wain

Writer: Paul Rudd, David Wain, Ken Marino and Timothy Dawling (screenplay), Timothy Dawling and W. Blake Herron (story)

Cinematographer: Russ T. Alsobrook

Starring: Paul Rudd, Seann William Scott, Elizabeth Banks, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Bobb’e J. Thompson, Jane Lynch

Studio/Running Time: Universal Pictures, 99 mins.

Even though it’s rated R, Role Models could easily be mistaken as a Judd Apatow-produced attempt at a family film. The film stars Seann William Scott and frequent Apatow collaborator Paul Rudd as co-workers who, after Rudd’s character loses it from a combination of his dead-end job and a rejected marriage proposal, gets sentenced to 120 hours of community service in lieu of prison. Their service consists of a big-brother-style mentorship program, where they take troubled Augie Farks (Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Aka: McLovin) and Ronnie Shields (Bobb’e J. Thompson) under their wings.  Along the way, wacky hijinks »

Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jane Lynch and Bobb'e J. Thompson in Role Models

Photo: Universal Pictures After seeing the first trailer I knew I was going to enjoy Role Models, I just knew it. When Bobb'e J. Thompson as Ronnie looks at Paul Rudd and says, "You white... then you Ben Affleck," it just killed me. Also in the film he refers to him as "Reindeer Games" and "Daredevil" and it is a joke that never gets old. That, however, is just a sampling of what this film has to offer when it comes to comedy and it is the comedic timing this film has and its ability to bump up just against the edge of over-the-top that makes it a hit. The film is centered on a pair of Minotaur Energy Drink salesmen, Danny and Wheeler (Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott). Their sales pitch is drink Minotaur and stay off drugs. »

Int: Jane Lynch

Jane Lynch is hilarious. I mean she is basically great in everything she does. I loved her in all the Apatow movies she's done. I really found her hilarious in Smiley Face. And I could name a whole bunch more but then I'd forget to write about Role Models. As the once cocaine addict Gayle Sweeny, she steals every scene she is in. It is a bizarre role and she doesn't fail to make you laugh at all. I loved her work alongside Seann William Scott and Paul Rudd. So the bizarre thing is, »
