As another year of horror ends, we reflect on the best this genre had to offer. Usually, that means focusing on those movies that drew the most attention. However, there are also those movies that slipped under everyone’s radars for whatever reason, ultimately causing them to be overlooked. So the objective here is to bring more attention to these releases as horror fans play catch-up.
Like last year, 2023 was a strong year for horror. And these ten hidden gems might have escaped notice at the time, but it’s never too late to discover them now.

If you subscribe to JoBlo Horror Originals (which you should!), you’ve probably caught our series 80’s Horror Movie Memories. In this show, we highlight all of our favourite horror movies from arguably the greatest decade for horror, with tons of very special guests. The decade started with a bang, with Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, the first instalment in the Friday the 13th series, John Carpenter’s The Fog, and more. Check out our feature-length examination of 1980 here, but this week, we’re looking at 1981.
While some may think the year pales compared to 1980, they might be underestimating what’s a pretty significant year for horror. Arguably, one would call it the year of the werewolf, with the year dominated by the best werewolf movies of all time, John Landis’s An American Werewolf in London and Joe Dante’s The Howling. While those might have been the biggest...

With the death of disco in 1979 and a demand for change, the 1980s evolved into a neon-soaked, totally rad decade held firm together with cans of “Aqua Net” burning a hole in the ozone. The time for free love and hope for peace was over. It was time for a revolution. But with filmmakers, their creative freedoms would lead to exploring more areas which haven’t been touched on before. It was the year horror would forever be changed.
In this special episode of 80s Horror Memories, we take a feature-length look at the year 1980 as a whole, taking deep dives into the influential horror flicks of the year. Here are the movies we profile:
Dressed to Kill: Brian DePalma’s controversial slasher, which, if anything, is even more provocative in 2023 than it was in 1980.
Maniac: William Lustig’s grimy thriller starring 80s horror icon Joe Spinell.

The Dracula 2000 episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Victoria Verduzco, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Horror in the year 2000 was something. Yeah, that’s it, it was something. A lot of it happened, some of it was great, some of it was good, and some of it, not so much. Actually, if the internet crowd is to be believed, the early 2000s, especially the year 2000 were abysmal for horror. We did get a few memorable films released in 2000 like the first Final Destination film, Cherry Falls, Ginger Snaps, The Cell, and American Psycho. However, the scales had some serious bad on the other side to balance it all out. Films like Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, Hellraiser: Inferno, Christina’s House, and Dracula 2000 (watch it Here) came and...

Hey all! John Fallon here aka The Arrow. Our docu-series, Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian: 80’s Horror Memories (binge it here), which thoroughly explores the decade in horror, is now 15 episodes in. We just wrapped 1980, 1981 and 1982 and we are about to go in balls deep into 1983 this coming Monday, August 28 on our JoBlo Horror Originals YouTube channel.
A series of this ilk doesn’t happen by itself, it takes an army of producers, writers, editors and our sole narrator to make the magic happens. So we thought it would be dandy to get our core staff to share with you their 10 favorite (not best) horror movies from the 80’s. Yes, it was tough on all of us to pick just 10 – but we knocked a few back and did what we could. Scroll down and peep our choices!

The merits of Method acting have often been a matter of debate. But it's true that, in controlled doses, a commitment to the reality of a script can help a performance achieve that next level of authenticity. In other words, we're not suggesting that actors should send their costars dead rats as gifts, but one example that has proven to be effective is the separation of certain actors either on or off-set. Method actors sometimes do this on their own, but it actually occurs more often at the request of a show or movie's director.
Some productions keep actors apart because they are portraying different versions of the same character and the director wants to avoid overlap. Others do it because their characters simply don't meet and, to preserve secrecy, wouldn't want them to meet while production takes place. Still others do it to inspire tension and surprise when characters do meet.

The best legacy sequels concern themselves with the weight of the decades that have passed and the long-term effects of the events separated by the gulf of time between entries. While these stories occur across the wide spectrum of entertainment, the horror genre is uniquely positioned to explore such follow ups. After all, just as years affect a life, so too does the horrors of one blood-soaked Halloween night.
Long before Halloween (2018) brought Jamie Lee Curtis back into the fold as Laurie Strode in an effort to explore her deeply repressed trauma, Halloween H20 (1998) set out to accomplish just that. Itself twenty years removed from John Carpenter’s original Halloween (1978), Halloween H20 is one of the most successful films of its kind and a high point for the franchise, providing emotional depth and a satisfying conclusion to Laurie Strode’s narrative. It may have hit theaters in early August, but its chilly,...

We’re 10 episodes in our docu-series 80’s Horror Memories (a new episode goes live every Monday on our JoBlo Horror Originals channel), and we still got heaps to go. So if you love horror and the 80’s then I would like to invite you to binge-watch our series right Here.
On a personal level it has been a pleasure producing this mammoth endeavor alongside Producer Berge Garabedian, show-runner Mike Conway, narrator Tyler Nichols and our army of talented writers and editors. And I’d also like to take the time to thank the fine folks at Dark Delicacies for letting use their space for our interviews and of course all of the talent that have appeared on the series thus far to share with us their horror memories from the glorious decade that was the 80’s.

When it comes to horror franchises the Halloween series is a bit like Chewbacca; it doesn’t make a lot of sense narratively unless you really understand what is going on. That’s right, you just heard a Star Wars reference in a video about a Halloween movie. Just roll with it… Technically the Halloween films are four different stories and one one-off tale told over the course of thirteen films, if my math is right away. Only one of these narrative shifts seems to have been done for creative reasons while the rest were undertaken in an effort to continue the series and make more money from the Halloween brand. If this sounds cynical to you,...

Bailee Madison is in the business of making people queasy, and she hopes to keep it that way. While she may have launched her career with Gábor Csupó’s 2007 fantasy feature, Bridge to Terabithia, these days she’s chasing down her dreams of becoming a scream queen. Currently appearing in the hit series, Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, Madison sat down with Collider's Arezou Amin back in December 2022 to chat about her casting in the third and final season of Hulu’s The Hardy Boys. While there, she reflected on her time in Patrick Lussier’s (My Bloody Valentine) horror-thriller Play Dead, a film that she previously revealed to Collider’s Perri Nemiroff made her sister so ill the family had to turn it off.

Red Right Hand: An Oral History – How the Nick Cave Song Became the Anthem of the ‘Scream’ Franchise
In October of 1994, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds unleashed their eighth studio album Let Love In. Three singles were released in conjunction with the certified silver UK collection leading up to its formal launch. And while “Do You Love Me?” and “Loverman” set the stage for the prolific album and its harmonic tenor, it was the third single that would go on to cross the boundaries of its art form and firmly implant itself in the hallowed halls of horror history.
Scream (1996) slashed its way to genre hungry audiences several years after “Red Right Hand” hit the shelves in music stores. Although the song was written independently of the film, it’s difficult to imagine one without the other. From the second it begins, “Red Right Hand” ushers forth a domineering force, guided by the bloody governing appendage of a madman that perfectly encapsulates the film’s ever encroaching threat.

US medical system is a gruesome house of horrors in Patrick Lussier’s macabre and surprisingly effective film
The US medical system proves a house of horrors in Patrick Lussier’s macabre and surprisingly effective thriller in which skint criminal forensics student Chloe (Bailee Madison) and brother Tj (Anthony Turpel) are on the verge of being evicted from their house, their dad’s life insurance having been invalidated because he killed himself. Tj and Chloe’s ex, Ross (Chris Lee), decide to steal the money the family needs, but the latter is gunned down during the robbery. When the siblings realise that Ross’s mobile phone, full of evidence that will incriminate Tj, is in police hands, Chloe has to find a way into the morgue where it has been logged.

“The Watchful Eye” plunges viewers into the depths of a haunted Manhattan apartment building as live-in nanny Elena (Mariel Molino) seeks a hidden treasure unbeknownst to the wealthy widower (Warren Christie) who employs her.
For the pacing of the reveals concerning both Elena and The Greybourne and its residents, showrunner Emily Fox says she drew from “The White Lotus” and “Mare of Easttown” for the Freeform thriller’s “slow burn” mystery.
“You always have to figure out how many cards to turn over in each episode to make it intriguing enough that people will want to come back and find out the answer, but not make it so complicated,” Fox told TheWrap. “We took a lot of inspiration from shows like ‘The White Lotus’ and ‘Mare of Easttown’ and some of these other slow burn mysteries where a lot happens that doesn’t necessarily solve your big mystery, but which takes interest you closer,...

“’Sunflower’ was the first script I sold when I landed in Hollywood, and now having the opportunity to make it my first feature directorial outing feels like kismet,” said Green in a statement. “I couldn’t have hoped for better partners and collaborators than Nathan, the Lionsgate team, Craig, and Jurnee to help me shepherd it to the big screen.”
