Usually wears hats in public; has done so since the early 1970s.
First cousin once removed of Carnie Wilson and Wendy Wilson, who are daughters of Brian Wilson.
Cousin of Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson, and Carl Wilson.
Member of The Beach Boys.
Born at 10:55am-PST
Inducted by Elton John into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a member of The Beach Boys) 20 January 1988.
Is the only member left from the original The Beach Boys lineup that is in the current group lineup.
Wrote or co-wrote the lyrics to most of The Beach Boys' surf-n-car songs, and other classics, including "California Girls" and "Good Vibrations". Was not always given writer's credit, though, which led to millions of dollars in lost royalties for him. When cousin and composer Brian Wilson won $25 million in a settlement with publishers Irving Music, Love in turn sued Wilson, and was awarded $12 million. (There was reportedly no malice involved; each had trusted other people with business matters originally, couldn't come to terms later, and turned to the court to finally settle things).
Became a follower of Transcendental Meditation in the 1960s, studying with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in India at the same time as The Beatles, Donovan, and Mia Farrow. While the Beatles soon abandoned TM and the Maharishi, Love went on to be a longtime supporter.
A liaison in 1966 resulted in his illegitimate daughter, Shawn Marie Love, whom Mike never publicly acknowledged. In 1983, Shawn married Mike's cousin Dennis Wilson, by whom she had a son, Gage. Shawn died of cancer in 2004.
His brother, Stan, played for the NBA's Baltimore Bullets in the early 1970s. Stan later worked as sometime manager for the Beach Boys, and companion to cousin Brian Wilson.
Is portrayed by Casey Sander in Summer Dreams: The Story of the Beach Boys (1990) (TV)
Uncle of Kevin Love.
He and the Beach Boys were awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1500 Vine Street in Hollywood, California.
[When asked if there was any mis-conception about the public perception of him and Brian Wilson] "Who wants to hear about Brian's mental problems anyway? I mean, to call a record "Sweet Insanity", imagine that. A whole album of Brian's madness that no one wants to release and still everyone says he's a genius! I make "Kokomo", it goes to number one in the charts and I'm still the dumb, know-nothing, talentless Mike Love."
(April 2006) Lives near Lake Tahoe, Nevada.
