Move Over Frankenstein and Snow White, Dueling Lego Movies Are the New Hotness

24 May 2012 7:00 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The future of the Lego film franchise isn’t yet written in stone, but what’s certain is that there are a number of studio execs out there really excited at the prospect of making movies about multi-colored, plastic blocks. The first studio to fire a shot in the Lego arms race was Warner Bros., who hired Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs helmers Phil Lord and Chris Miller to write and direct Lego: The Movie, or whatever they’re going to end up calling it. Despite the fact that making movies based on a line of building blocks is completely asinine, Lord and Miller’s take on the material sounded like a case of the best being made out of a ridiculous situation; as they’ve actually come up with a promising story. But suddenly they’re not the only players in the Lego game. Now Universal wants to get their hands on a Lego property »

Universal Brings Lego’s Hero Factory to the Big Screen

24 May 2012 8:08 AM, PDT | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

Universal studio is reportedly in negotiations to acquire the rights to Lego’s Hero Factory line of toys. Michael Finch and Alex Litvak, who co-wrote Predators for Fox, would write the script, something about that is said to be both ‘distinct’ and ‘dense’. Warner Bros. already has a Lego-based film (in development since 2008) and planned [...]

Lego Hero Factory Robots Getting Film Adaptation

24 May 2012 8:00 AM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

There are countless examples of how Hollywood likes to work in pairs - The Prestige and The Illusionist, Volcano and Dante's Peak, Antz and A Bug's Life - and this looks to be no different. Not to be confused with Chris Miller and Phil Lord's upcoming Lego adaptation for Warner Bros., Universal has acquired the rights to Lego's Hero Factory Robots and set Michael Finch and Alex Litvak to write a screenplay based on their adventures.

THR has the news, and they describe the Hero Factory line as an interactive series that includes toys, comics, a theme park, and of course an app. (Hero Factory is a follow-up to Lego's recent Bionicle series.)

The characters hail from a planet where a factory churns out robotic machines whose goal is to fight intergalactic evil. The heroes include characters such as Stormer, Bulk, Stringer, Furno and Breez with villains having monikers »

Universal Tackling Lego Franchise ‘Hero Factory’

23 May 2012 5:51 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Competing Lego films? Not necessarily, but we can, nevertheless, expect two features that find root in the popular children’s toys — we’ve told you about the first, which will be co-directed by Phil Lord & Chris Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street). Now, THR has learned that Universal and Film 360 are looking to purchase Hero Factory, a toy robot line that everyone promises will actually have a story behind it.

In a set of circumstances that sound an awful lot like Michael Bay‘s recent ventures, Hero Factory will center on cyborgs who “hail from a planet where a factory churns out robotic machines whose goal is to fight intergalactic evil.” Michael Finch and Alex Litvak (Predators, The Three Musketeers) are being sought to scribe the story, something about which is said to be both “distinct” and “dense” — but it all sounds like marketing gibberish to myself. »

Blu-ray, DVD Release: 21 Jump Street

7 May 2012 10:04 AM, PDT | Disc Dish | See recent Disc Dish news »

Blu-ray & DVD Release Date: June 26, 2012

Price: DVD $30.99, Blu-ray $35.99

Studio: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

Another in Hollywood’s line of movie adaptations of older TV shows, 21 Jump Street brings the high school detectives to the present, with Channing Tatum (Haywire) and Jonah Hill (Moneyball) heading back to school to solve a crime.

In high school, Tatum and Hill were the jock and geek, respectively, but in Police Academy, they discover they’re better if they join forces. The unlikely pair of underachievers are assigned to blend in at a high school to bring down a synthetic drug ring. Things get complicated, however, when they mix up their identities during registration then start to enjoy their new school experiences.

The satire got good reviews from critics and moviegoers, calling it affectionate to the 1980s television series (and it does have a fun twist at the end in that vein).

Release dates set for Lego, 42 and Celeste And Jesse Forever

24 April 2012 11:19 AM, PDT | GordonandtheWhale | See recent GordonandtheWhale news »

Get the calendars out ladies and gents, because a trio of rather intriguing projects have just gotten release dates.

First, and probably the most intriguing if only because of the bizarre choice of property, WB has slated Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s next film (and no, it’s not a fast-tracked 21 Jump Street sequel), Lego, to hit theaters on February 28, 2014. The duo wrote the script, which at this point is all we really know about the film.

THR reports Paramount has hired the writing duo behind last year's surprise hit Smurfs to pen The Ringling Brothers, based on the traveling circus. Plot details are unknown but the project is being conceived as a family adventure, such as Night at the Museum, and will be set in the present day.

Lego Movie coming February 2014

24 April 2012 10:30 AM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Phil Lord and Chris Miller began their film career in 2009 with the animated children's book adapation, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. The film, featuring the voices of Bill HaderAnna Faris, Bruce Campbell, James Caan, Andy Samberg, Mr. T and Neil Patrick Harris, was a huge hit with $243 million at the box office. This year, they made their live-action directorial debut with 21 Jump Street, based on the television show, and it starred Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. Unlike Cloudy, it was more for teens and adults. The film was also a hit with $166 million. Now, Lord and Miller are returning to children's entertainment with none other than Lego.

Yes, a film about LEGOs is being made from the directors of 21 Jump Street and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. To me, this is a good thing. At least they're funny and they don't pull punches with their humor when »

Want to know when you might be able to see some of the movies that you might be interested in seeing? Yes? That’s good, because we’ve got somewhat of a release date round-up for you.

First up is Warner Bros’ "Lego" movie – a movie that we’d be completely put off by were it not for the fact that Phil Lord & Chris Miller (“21 Jump Street,” “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”) have written the screenplay, and will also direct the CGI film about the little plastic building blocks. The studio have penciled the movie in for a Feb 28th release date in 2014 – a date that, for the time being, they have all to themselves, although ironically, "Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers," the sequel to their debut, which they're producing, is currently set to land three weeks earlier, on February 7th.

Release Dates Set for ‘Lego,’ ‘42,’ ‘Celeste and Jesse,’ and TWC’s Animated Slate

23 April 2012 6:13 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

A whole bevy of release dates have been brought to our attention, so let’s get right down to it. Deadline tells us that February 24th, 2014 will see the release of Lego, a film from Phil Lord, Chris Miller (21 Jump Street, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs), and Chris McKay. You might think it’s a terrible idea — I did, at first — but some quotes from the former two directors has me legitimately interested in what might come from the film. Fingers crossed on this one.

Secondly, Deadline reports that Brian Helgeland‘s 42, a Jackie Robinson-centered drama, will be released by Warner Bros. on April 12th, 2013 — three days before the 66th anniversary of the player’s induction into the Mlb. Chadwick Boseman will play Robinson; Harrison Ford has been cast as Dodgers executive Branch Rickey; and Nicole Beharie is appearing as Robinson’s wife, Rachel. Christopher Meloni, T.R. Knight, »

Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Lego Set for Release in 3D on February 28, 2014

23 April 2012 3:38 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

One of the funniest movies of 2012 so far has been the pleasantly surprising 21 Jump Street.  Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) brought their goofy humor to this feature film iteration of the popular TV series that was buoyed by some terrific comedic performances from Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum.  For their next project, Lord and Miller have been hard at work on a feature-length Lego movie.  Though plot details are scarce, we know that the film will incorporate some of the most popular Lego characters while introducing some new ones, and it centers on a young hero who must save the Lego world from destruction. Warner Bros. announced today that they have set the film for a February 28th, 2014 release and they have confirmed that it will be in 3D.  Hit the jump for more, including what competition the pic will face on that date. »

5 Directors Who Could Take Over From Brad Bird On 'Mission: Impossible 5'

18 April 2012 7:00 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Early this week, Brad Bird confirmed, via an interview with Crave, what many had long assumed: despite "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" being the most successful entry in the franchise to date, the Pixar veteran will not be returning for another crack at the Tom Cruise-led spy series, saying that, "I think that one of the things that’s fun about the series is that they always pull in a different director and try to get a different kind of take on the premise."

With Paramount keen to get the balling rolling on the next entry after the $700 million success of 'Ghost Protocol' -- and hoping to avoid the five year gap between the last couple of movies -- it likely won't be long before the search for a helmer begins in earnest. Of course, Paramount may not have much say in the hiring of the director: Cruise has always led this series, »

2012: The Best Movies of March

8 April 2012 11:53 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

2012 promises to be a fantastic year in cinema. Not too long ago, we posted a list of thirty of our most anticipated films of 2012, and so I decided I would keep track of my favourite films released each month. Here are my five favorite films released in March.

-

1- Once Upon A Time In Anatolia

Directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan

Screenplay by Nuri Bilge Ceylan  and Ebru Ceylan

Nuri Bilge Ceylan is one of the most interesting directors working on the international scene, and Once Upon A Time In Anatolia might just be his best movie to date. This being his sixth feature, it won the Grand Prize at Cannes last year and as since received critical acclaim around the world.

In this metaphysical quasi-police procedural, a group of men (including a police commissioner, a prosecutor, a doctor and a murder suspect) drive out in the middle of the night through the Anatolian countryside, »
