Received a B.A. in English literature from King's College, Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Winner of Multiple Tony Awards for Costume and Set Design.

Began designing sets and costumes for Showcase Theatre, Wilkes Barre Pa. (now located in Exeter, Pa.)

Has won three Tony Awards: as Best Costume Designer, in 1977 for "The Cherry Orchard", in a tie with Theoni V. Aldredge for "Annie"; and in 1990 for "Grand Hotel, The Musical"; and as Best Scenic Designer, in 1989 for "Cafe Crown". In addition, he has been Tony-nominated nine other times: as Best Scenic Designer, in 1973 for "That Championship Season"; in 1974 for "What the Wine-Sellers Buy"; in 1977 for "American Buffalo;" also in 1977 for "The Cherry Orchard"; in 1981 for "The Suicide"; in 2003 for "Long Day's Journey into Night";and in 2005 for "Glengarry Glen Ross"; and as Best Costume Designer, in 1998 for "Ragtime"; and in 1999 for "Fosse".

Recieved a B.A. in English literature from King's College, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

He was nominated for a 1993 Joseph Jefferson Award for Costume Design for "Lost in Yonkers" at Fox Theatricals in Chicago, Illinois.

He was nominated for a 1995 Joseph Jefferson Award for Scenic Design for "Three Sisters" at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, Illinois.

He was nominated for a 1999 Joseph Jefferson Award for Scenic Design for "Morning Star" at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, Illinois.

He was nominated for a 2005 Joseph Jefferson Award for Scenic Design for "The Dresser" at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, Illinois.
