Personal Best: Caro Returns to Studio Filmmaking with Feel-Good Adaptation

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything from New Zealand director Niki Caro, who made headlines with her 2002 sophomore film, Whale Rider, before making her Hollywood debut with 2005’s North Country. After the dismal reception of her 2009 effort, A Heavenly Vintage (aka The Vinter’s Luck), she’s helmed, of all things, a Disney film, McFarland, USA. Kevin Costner, once the penultimate star of mainstream, sports themed cinema, finds himself as the figure responsible for fostering athletic careers, moving from Ivan Reitman’s Draft Day to late 1980’s cross-country coach here. Caro’s film is the second ‘based on a true story’ minority flavored studio flick this year, following Sean McNamara’s Spare Parts, which also relates the travails of a group of Hispanic students overcoming odds to succeed in an organized school events. Eastwood’s Fistful Of Dollars: ‘Sniper’s Cume At $110.4M – 4-Day Actuals

20 January 2015 3:48 PM, PST | Deadline | See recent Deadline news »

6th Update, Tuesday, 3 Pm: Rentrak Theatrical filed the weekend’s actuals with Warner Bros.’ American Sniper counting a four-week cume through yesterday of $110.4M. Talk about the spoils of war: American Sniper propelled the 2015 box office, in its first 19 days, 3.6% percent over the same frame last year with $667M. It stands to reason that this would be the highest-grossing four-day Mlk weekend of all-time with $248.5M after American Sniper broke a slew of records, read Eastwood’s career-high bow, best three-day opening ever during January and February. Previous Mlk record was 2009 with $231.5M when Sony comedy Paul Blart: Mall Cop zoomed up a four-day bow of $39.2M. American Sniper had the biggest theater average of the four-day weekend with $30,100, followed by Sony Classic’s Still Alice, which chalked up $20,685 PTA or $248K in 12 venues.

The consensus is that American Sniper is going to hold for another two weekends. Wide releases »

Film Review: ‘Spare Parts’

16 January 2015 12:16 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

You’re really asking for trouble when you title your film “Spare Parts,” especially when said film is as unabashedly formulaic as the one cobbled together by helmer Sean McNamara (“Soul Surfer”) and scriptwriter Elissa Matsueda. And yet, even though it’s easy to identify all the recycled elements — bits and pieces of several inspirational-teacher scenarios, ranging from “To Sir, With Love” to “Stand and Deliver” — in this “based on a true story” concoction, there can be no denying the feel-good effect of the finished product. Word of mouth should trump mixed reviews, giving this latest Hispanic-skewing Lionsgate/Pantelion release a chance to exceed expectations and appeal to crossover audiences in a variety of platforms.

Derived from an article written by Joshua Davis for Wired magazine, “Spare Parts” spins a lightweight yet likable tale of underdogs triumphant. Specifically, it’s the story of Hispanic students from a Phoenix high school »

Forecast (cont.): 'Paddington,' 'Blackhat,' 'Spare Parts'

15 January 2015 2:36 PM, PST | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

<< Continued from "Weekend Report: 'Sniper' Sets Sights on January Record"At 3,303 locations, Paddington is shaping up to be a solid choice for family moviegoers this weekend. The movie was originally scheduled to open on Christmas Day; recognizing that there was an abundance of family options around that time, the Weinstein Company smartly moved Paddington back to this less crowded mid-January date. In the past, Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend has proved a good launching pad for family movies. Last year, The Nut Job earned $25.7 million over the four-day weekend, while Beauty and the Beast (3D) took in $22.2 million over the long weekend back in 2012. With great reviews (97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) and a solid marketing effort, Paddington seems poised to open in a similar range.Opening at 2,567 theaters, Michael Mann's Blackhat will probably be the odd man out this weekend. While Mann has a vocal fan base, it's unlikely »

Parts Per Nil: McNamara Family Value Aesthetic Lessens Impact of Immigration Issues

As we meander through the opening credits of Sean McNamara’s Spare Parts, we come to the inevitable information announcing that the film is based on a magazine article from Wired by Joshua Davis (who, interestingly, directed a film back in 2000 called West Coast, which has not been released). Significant liberties have been taken to relate the rather inspirational story of four Hispanic (and undocumented) high school students that formed a robotic club and conquered a contest formerly ruled by reigned collegiate MIT students. While McNamara, whose other notable directorial outing was 2011’s family faith-based film Soul Surfer, is always well-meaning with this endeavor and doesn’t lodge into schmaltzy overtones, events and certain realities are unduly softened, as if we were watching a parable about disenfranchised minority teenagers from a slightly more progressive alternate universe.
